Yo doofus, that's what they do in the classes too! You seriously need to meet up with someone face to face and learn that way or really dedicate yourself to learning the language not just picking up a couple of words here and there. It isn't an effective way of learning.. trust me, i did that with Arabic and i didn't well as i could have done.:)

So, where do you want to start from?:D

Well, i don't know any books because i didn't learn the language from books. Also, if you're going to learn from books you will be learning a very refined form of it-- the way most surti's speak it thesedays isn't how gujarati is spoken 'properly' in India.

Personally (just my personal opinion you don't have to agree with it) i think you should split your learning into two main topics-
1- learning as many vocabs as possible (keep a book for it maybe)
2- learning grammar and sentence structure.
Put 1 + 2 together = learning the language.

What do you think?
What do you want to start with?

Dictionary and glossary- both sound good.

Like all languages, there are certain rules grammar rules for gujarati too. So yeah.

For audio, you could talk to a Gujji. Or you could just right it as transliteration and speak it out aloud that way.

I could get you an excellent book on Indian dishes. It's South African, too.:D

Transliteration is basically a long word for writing out the say way you talk. Like writing arabic in english and reading it back that way. Saying 'majama' is transliteration as it isn't written in Gujerati. Sorry for being so akward.:D

Start now if you want? What do you want to start with? (Oh, do you also want to learn how to write and read gujji? -- because i don't know how to do that it just looks like pretty sqiggles to me!)

Hello- Namaste or just stick with the Islamic 'Assalamu alaikum' greeting

Q:How are you? - Kem cho?
A: I'm fine- Majemah/ Haru che

Thank you- Shukria
Welcome(As in you're welcome)- Maharbani

Goodbye- Awjoh

Please don't go round saying Namaste to Surti Guji Muslims- they will probably think you're mad. It's more of a Hindu thing because as Muslims we still have our own Islamic greetings which are universal cross all languages we speak. :D

Scenario:

Im invited to a friends house (Gujji Surti) and we have food together what do I start of with in regards to greeting and food talk?

- How do I say who I am?

- How do I say who I am?

Okey, you can first start off by saying salam and telling them what your name is.

'Assalamu alaikum. Maru naam Ferrari che.' or 'Meh Ferrari che.' (My name is Ferrari/I am Ferrari.

If you wanted to say how old you were you can say: Meh 24 waras nuh che.

And where you live: meh Pluto par rhem.:D

- How do I say I work at uni and just finished my masters?
Meh amreg Masters degree puree kayree neh university meh kam karuh / Meh amreg Masters degre puree kayree neh univerity meh kam kartuh che

i just finished my Masters degree and also work at uni

- How do I compliment their food?
Tahmunu kawanu maneh buh pasand lagtu che:D

i really like/enjoy your food

LOL @ Ferrari and Pluto hahahahaha like your sense of humour!!!

Ok so

Salaam
Meru naam Farooq che (and) Meh 24 waras nuh che!!!
Kem cho?
meh England par rhem!

*here they ask what I do*

Meh amreg Masters degree puree kayree neh university meh kam karuh (transliteration here is right?)

*after food I say*

Tahmunu kawanu maneh buh pasand lagtu che

meh England par rhem!you don't live on England. par means on. In this case you would have to say 'meh England ma rhem' - i live in England

*here they ask what I do*

Meh amreg Masters degree puree kayree neh university ma bee (sounds better) meh kam karuh (transliteration here is right?)

*after food I say*

Tahmunu kawanu maneh buh pasand lagtu chemy typing mistakes are so bad it's supposed to be tahmARu. Also if you are complimenting the food after you've finished you will have to change the 'pasand lagtu che' to 'pasand layghu'. 'pasand lagtu che' is used in the present tense as you are eating.

YAY sounds similar to Urdu :D

Since there arent any gujrati brothers hes learning it from the sisters that too observe modesty!

Yes i have read the thread title, and the rest of the posts for that matter!
maybe you should read through them again........
I'm just doing my job of bringing u back to reality.......I don't want to be held questionable for seeing sommat dodgey and dismissing it! because although it may not seem it, i do give a 'toss' about my fellow muslim brother and sisters!
And no matter how much u want to deny it in your heart of hearts you know i'm right.

OUCH!

Exactly what is it that your accusing me of?

Yes I love Gujarati and yes I'd love to study it and learn as much as possible theres a reason behind why and you don't need to know...

I'm also learning to cook Gujarati dishes some of my favourite dishes!

What else... please say what is on your mind let me note that I have over 30 muslim forums under my belt and they are all about spreading dawah and learning gujarati and arabic so reading one thread on me isnt going to help 'dont judge a book by its cover' try reading my other threads once in a while too...

Anything else you like to accuse me off while I'm here? Oh and whats reality!?
