Over 60 dead, more than 40 hurt in claymore blast in Sri Lanka
V.S. Sambandan

Colombo, June. 15 At least 60 civilians were killed and over 40 others injured in a powerful claymore blast, which hit a passenger bus, triggered by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Sri Lanka’s north-central Anuradhapura district on Thursday morning, a Government spokesman said. Those killed include women, children and members of the clergy.

The powerful claymore blast was triggered around 7.40 a.m. This is the biggest civilian target by the LTTE since the signing of the February 2002 ceasefire agreement.

Evil design of terrorists

The Sri Lankan Government called the killings the evil design of terrorists to provoke a backlash. It appealed for restraint. It also said the blast bore the hallmark of LTTE.

"There is no iota of doubt that it is the LTTE. It's a barbaric act of terrorism," it said, urging international community to extend cooperation to it at this crucial time.
