First of all you need to understand what the Sunnah is - it is the 'path' of the Prophet pbuh, the sum of all his teachings. Who interpreted the Sunnah? Is it open for reinterpretation?
We follow the sunnah, the Prophet's teachings, as they were understood by the companions of the Prophet pbuh, because their understanding was endorsed by the Prophet pbuh himself.
As for the issue of interpretation, then this only applies in minor issues relating to the application of Islamic laws and teachings to different and new circumstances. The fundamentals are all agreed upon.
