View Full Version : What do Muslims believe the Injeel contained?

This topic is based on a Question asked by Phil12123:

Woodrow, our recent posts related to the "Gospel" part of the above ("Injeel"). What I wanted to know was, what that consists of, if not what Paul tells us. Jesus' dying for our sins is part of what Paul defines as the Gospel. So we didn't go too far off topic, but if you'd like to start a different thread and continue our discussion there, that is fine.

Phil, I do not believe we know exactly what was contained in the Injeel, as the original Injeel no longer exists. However, on a personal level I believe some parts of todays NT contain some of the words from the Injeel. The problem is I do not know exactly which ones. However, I believe the Qur'an can does give us some insight as to what it contained.

For Instance:

43:61. And (Jesus) shall be a Sign (for the coming of) the Hour (of Judgment): therefore have no doubt about the (Hour), but follow ye Me: this is a Straight Way. S P C
43:62. Let not the Evil One hinder you: for he is to you an enemy avowed. S P
43:63. When Jesus came with Clear Signs, he said: "Now have I come to you with Wisdom, and in order to make clear to you some of the (points) on which ye dispute: therefore fear Allah and obey me. S P
C

43:64. "For Allah, He is my Lord and your Lord: so worship ye Him: this is a Straight Way." S P C
43:65. But sects from among themselves fell into disagreement: then woe to the wrong-doers, from the Penalty of a Grievous Day! S P
43:66. Do they only wait for the Hour - that it should come on them all of a sudden, while they perceive not? S P C

43:67. Friends on that day will be foes, one to another,- except the Righteous. S P C
43:68. My devotees! no fear shall be on you that Day, nor shall ye grieve,- S P C
43:69. (Being) those who have believed in Our Signs and bowed (their wills to Ours) in Islam. S P
43:70. Enter ye the Garden, ye and your wives, in (beauty and) rejoicing. S P C

43:71. To them will be passed round, dishes and goblets of gold: there will be there all that the souls could desire, all that their ayes could delight in: and ye shall abide therein (for eye). S P C
43:72. Such will be the Garden of which ye are made heirs for your (good) deeds (in life). S P C
43:73. Ye shall have therein abundance of fruit, from which ye shall have satisfaction. S P C

43:74. The sinners will be in the Punishment of Hell, to dwell therein (for aye): S P
43:75. Nowise will the (Punishment) be lightened for them, and in despair will they be there overwhelmed. S P
43:76. Nowise shall We be unjust to them: but it is they who have been unjust themselves. S P C
43:77. They will cry: "O Malik! would that thy Lord put an end to us!" He will say, "Nay, but ye shall abide!" S P C

43:78. Verily We have brought the Truth to you: but most of you have a hatred for Truth. S P C
43:79. What! have they settled some plan (among themselves)? But it is We Who settle things. S P C
43:80. Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private counsels? Indeed (We do), and Our messengers are by them, to record. S P C

43:81. Say: "If (Allah) Most Gracious had a son, I would be the first to worship." S P C
43:82. Glory to the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne (of Authority)! (He is free) from the things they attribute (to him)! S P C
43:83. So leave them to babble and play (with vanities) until they meet that Day of theirs, which they have been promised. S P C

43:84. It is He Who is Allah in heaven and Allah on earth; and He is full of Wisdom and Knowledge. S P
43:85. And blessed is He to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all between them: with Him is the Knowledge of the Hour (of Judgment): and to Him shall ye be brought back. S P
C
43:86. And those whom they invoke besides Allah have no power of intercession;- only he who bears witness to the Truth, and they know (him). S P C

43:87. If thou ask them, who created them, they will certainly say, Allah: How then are they deluded away (from the Truth)? S P C
43:88. (Allah has knowledge) of the (Prophet's) cry, "O my Lord! Truly these are people who will not believe!" S P C
43:89. But turn away from them, and say "Peace!" But soon shall they know! S P C

Just for my own clarification, Woodrow, what does "S P" and "S P C" mean? Secondly, who is being referred to when it says "We" or "Our"?

Peace

Peace
The (SP) and (SPC) I am not certain as to the proper word meanining, however what it designates is that the line is a translation from the Qur'an and that the translation has been re-checked to see that others are in agree ment with the translation.

What I am using here is a translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. Arabic can not be translated properly into English, so all translations are just an approximation as to what the connontation of the words are.. You will note that some words are in parenthesis. That is because they were contained within the implication of a word and have no actual Arabic equivilant.

The Words We and Our are used as the Proper pronoun for God(SWT) they do not desiignate pluraity. We and Our are used in Arabic to designate words spoken from some one of Great Authority. They are the closest English words to the Arabic connontation. Arabic like all mid-Eastern languages has very many subtle idioms that do not translate into any direct English words.
