Hundreds of people have staged a peaceful rally in the Somalia capital Mogadishu on Friday taking the streets of former abandoned villages in the city – it is the first peace march made by Mogadishu residents in more than decade.

By Mohamed Abdi Farah

The rally which was called ‘the long peace march’ was organized by officials of Islamic Courts who took control of the capital and other key towns in southern Somalia from US-backed warlords last month.

More than one thousand civilians, some with cars and others on foot went through deserted areas devastated by the civil war in the capital from Hosh village in the southwest to the down town of the capital.

Cheered people were waiving flags and portraits showing the peace signs resumed in the capital after 15 years of gun rule by Somali warlords.

This is to mark the new change in the capital by Islamic Courts who won to remove totally unscrupulous warlords who people believed to be the standing blocks before peace and stability.

Earlier, the deputy security official of Islamic Courts Sheikh Mukhtar Robow known as ‘Abu-Mansur’ told the people that all the fiefdoms made by warlords have ended and every blocked street in the capital is open now and then.

He indicated that every one will get his property back and there will be no illegal possession in Mogadishu and other areas controlled by Islamic Courts.

The Islamists – accused by Washington of harboring foreign terror suspects hold responsible for the 1998-2002 bomb attacks in Kenya – try to restore the law and order in the southern Somalia despite much fears over they might resemble for former Taliban rule.
