I learned that circumcision is considered good for girls. I thought that Islam tried to separate itself from this practice. So, yes I learned something new.

Do boys that are unable to get circumcised as infants have to when they are older?

This thread talks about female circumcision more in detail.

its a must for boys optional for girls but dates back before Islam as a tribal practice (with girls). I think the boy can be as old as 13 doesnt have to be newborn as its done in western societies for non religious reasons which to me has no point people just do it cause everyone else is. I am not sure though someone correct me if im wrong about the up to 13 yrs old thing.

My son was premature and unable to get circumcised. I'm not 100% certain but I'd bet that a mandatory circumcision at this point is just enough to keep him non-muslim for the rest of his life.

Why is it done in Western cultures. Primarily because it is a fast, easy way for the Doctor to make an extra $100.

I did not say that as a joke. That has been shown to be the primary reason, many times. Yes, I am going by memory as to where I read that, but I also heard the same thing from several of my MD friends.

EDIT: I better clarify, my above response relates only in cases when it is not for religious reasons.

no it can be done at any age, my mother didnt have my brother done when he was a baby because in her family it just wasnt done, but when he was like 10 he had this weird medical condition where his foeskin wouldnt retract and became tight and affected his urination, this problem is rare but this is generally why boys and men get it done after they are far from babies, but i think with Muslims they can do it up to 13 yrs old? anyone have the specifics on this. And yes woodrow your right about the reason why non religious people in the United states do it so much cause in other countries u really wont hear of this unless they are Jews or Muslims.

I agree that it's done unnecessarily in the USA. Doctors do try to make more money. Also most people want their sons privates to resemble those of their father. It may be a stupid reason but I hear it all the time. I actually hear more men argue that it should be done because it looks better.

yea or they say they cant keep clean or stink but i know for a fact thats a big lie not to go into specifics but before i was Muslim my ex fiance was not and he didnt have any odor problems so theres many myths out there and it should only be done for relgious reasons not myths, same myths they try to use for female circumcision.

I think you're right. It's mostly myths.

Question:

our son is almost 4mths old. He had a heart transplant at 91/2weeks of life. We did not get him circumcised because the doctors said it would interfere with his health. Now he has another problem. His testes have not descended into the sac. We consulted with the urologist and he would like us to wait until our son is 9 months old. Is it permissible for us to wait?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

If there is a necessity which means that this child cannot be circumcised at the time prescribed by sharee’ah, it is permissible to delay it, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allaah is Most Merciful to you” [al-Nisaa’ 4:29]

“Allaah burdens not a person beyond his scope” [al-Baqarah 2:286]

And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If I command you to do a thing, do as much of it as you can.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6858; Muslim, 1337). And there is the shar’i principle that cases of necessity make things which are ordinarily forbidden permissible.

Circumcision does not usually result in harm, but if the doctor who has told you not to have your son circumcised knows that it could cause real harm, there is nothing wrong with waiting until the child is able to undergo this procedure.

“One of the things which cancels the obligation of circumcision is when the child is weak and is unable to bear it, so much so that that his life would be in danger. If his weak state persists, he will be excused for not being circumcised, because at most, circumcision is (obligatory) but because he is incapable of doing it, he will be excused. This is the same as in the case of all other obligatory duties.”

“In Sharh al-Hidaayah it says: … he should be prevented from doing it, and there are many other similar examples, such as doing ghusl with cold water in very cold weather when one is sick, or a sick person fasting when his life may be placed in jeopardy if he fasts, or carrying out the hadd punishments on someone who is sick or pregnant, etc. All of these are reasons why the action should not be carried out, and they make it no longer waajib (obligatory).”

And Allaah knows best.
