View Full Version : Pluto no longer a planet

Pluto no longer a planet, say astronomers

PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) -- Leading astronomers declared Thursday that Pluto is no longer a planet under historic new guidelines that downsize the solar system from nine planets to eight.

After a tumultuous week of clashing over the essence of the cosmos, the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of the planetary status it has held since its discovery in 1930. The new definition of what is -- and isn't -- a planet fills a centuries-old black hole for scientists who have labored since Copernicus without one.

1.NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured Pluto and its moon Charon in this image.
2.The International Astronomical Union decided Thursday to demote Pluto -- the solar system now has 8 planets.

Although astronomers applauded after the vote, Jocelyn Bell Burnell -- a specialist in neutron stars from Northern Ireland who oversaw the proceedings -- urged those who might be "quite disappointed" to look on the bright side.

"It could be argued that we are creating an umbrella called 'planet' under which the dwarf planets exist," she said, drawing laughter by waving a stuffed Pluto of Walt Disney fame beneath a real umbrella.

The decision by the prestigious international group spells out the basic tests that celestial objects will have to meet before they can be considered for admission to the elite cosmic club.

For now, membership will be restricted to the eight "classical" planets in the solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Much-maligned Pluto doesn't make the grade under the new rules for a planet: "a celestial body that is in orbit around the sun, has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a ... nearly round shape, and has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit."
Instead, it will be reclassified in a new category of "dwarf planets," similar to what long have been termed "minor planets." The definition also lays out a third class of lesser objects that orbit the sun -- "small solar system bodies," a term that will apply to numerous asteroids, comets and other natural satellites.

It was unclear how Pluto's demotion might affect the mission of NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, which earlier this year began a 9 1/2-year journey to the oddball object to unearth more of its secrets.

The decision at a conference of 2,500 astronomers from 75 countries was a dramatic shift from just a week ago, when the group's leaders floated a proposal that would have reaffirmed Pluto's planetary status and made planets of its largest moon and two other objects.

That plan proved highly unpopular, splitting astronomers into factions and triggering days of sometimes combative debate that led to Pluto's undoing.
Now, two of the objects that at one point were cruising toward possible full-fledged planethood will join Pluto as dwarfs: the asteroid Ceres, which was a planet in the 1800s before it got demoted, and 2003 UB313, an icy object slightly larger than Pluto whose discoverer, Michael Brown of the California Institute of Technology, has nicknamed "Xena."

Charon, the largest of Pluto's three moons, is no longer under consideration for any special designation.

Brown was pleased by the decision. He had argued that Pluto and similar bodies didn't deserve planet status, saying that would "take the magic out of the solar system."

It's Jupiter that has the big ugly red blemish. Venus is the most Beautiful of the planets. Often seen as the Morning Star or the Evening star.

Pluto never was a Planet, it was a misguided comet that got lost and disguised itself as a planet. Near sighted Percy Lowell using a toy telescope with a spot on it, misnamed it so that he could have a planet named after himself. Don't believe that mythological junk about how Pluto got it's name.

We only know for certain that there are things in the universe we will never know or understand. We do know Man, Jinns and Angels exist, no reason there can't be other things.

I can not find anything to specificaly indicate there is life elswhere. But, neither can I find anything that would rule it out.

I'm fairly certain there is a light out in space that we call the sun That is out in Space. I am reasonably certain the moon is out there too. I know I haven't actually personaly touched it. But, every now and then at night I see ssomething that people have told me is the moon. I suspect it exists. I know that there are dots of light way far away and that the Qur'an called them stars. I believe they exist. It seems that with a little simple triangulation we can verify that they are very far off. That seems to indicate outer space exists. It keeps the stars far enough away so we don't bump into them.

The early Arabs actually developed the early science of Astronomy, they were familiar with at least the visible planets. Mercury, Venus, Earth, mars, Jupiter and Saturn. They described them and their relationships in space very well. They also named the majority of the Stars. so it is fairly safe to say that The Early Scholars were aware of outer space.

I think the fact that the Qur'an says so little, is actually an acknowledgement of the matter in outer space being common knowledge and in no need of further proof.

Just as we can not find any reference on how to start a fire, the people knew how, there was no need to elaborate further.

I believe we can accept the findings of astronomers, unless we see something that violates the words of the Qur'an.

I also recall some Ulamaa talking about Zuharah, which is the Arabic name for Venus.....

Allahu A3lam though, I prefer not to make a big deal of matters like this.

The Planets were named by the early shepards in the mideast. They became part of many pagan religions the common names used for them come from the Romans and Greeks. The Arabic names for them are quite different.

The visible planets were known to the Arabs and the early Muslims These are the Arabic names:

The Sun Shams

Mercury Otaared

Venus Zuhra

Earth Ard

Moon Quamar

Mars Merrikh

Jupitar Mushtarie

Saturn Zuhal

The biggest surprise is how much they knew about them, without the use of telescopes.

The absolute proof that it really happened is the Screen writers union, the Actors guild, etc.

Going by the wage scales demanded by these various unions it would be much cheaper to send a man to the moon on a military pay scale than to pay union wages for a fantacized film.

Plus everybody knows any staged film produced in the US would have commercials.

Question:
I'm interested regarding NIL AMSTRONG.we know he had embraced islam.is he alive ? if so, pls reply about him.
Some of my friends don't belive regarding his embracing islam.

Answer:
Praise be to Allaah. The story about Neil Armstrong, who they say was the first man to step onto the surface of the moon, becoming a Muslim is one of the stories that are passed around among people. We have researched this story and we did not find any reliable source for it.

We have got used to hearing stories like that which then turn out to false, and it seems that this is a deliberate attempt to shake the faith of the ordinary Muslims, especially since they fabricated this story with some exciting details, that seem to affirm the superiority of this religion over all other religions. So they spread the news that famous people, such as artists, sportsmen and others have become Muslim, and they quote something with the story that affirms the truth of the Messenger and his message, then after a while they hasten to disprove these stories. Perhaps the story about Armstrong becoming a Muslim is of this type, because he is one of the most famous people in the world. Moreover the reason why he supposedly became Muslim – as they say – is that he heard the adhaan (call to prayer) on the Moon then he heard it again in Egypt.

If the story of such a famous person becoming Muslim was really true, you would see him calling people to Islam and you would see the scholars and daa’iyahs and the Islamic media meeting him and talking to him, none of which happened in this case. If you compare the story of Armstrong supposedly becoming Muslim with the story of Yusuf Islam (the former Cat Stevens, the famous British singer), you will see the difference between lies and truth, imagination and reality.

Yusuf Islam is one of the most famous of those who have really converted to Islam, so you see his picture in the Islamic media and he has his schools in Britain, and he travels in the Muslim world and performs Hajj and ‘Umrah. What has Neil Armstrong done of such things, even though he is far more famous?

Whatever the case, we do not need to hear the adhaan on the Moon in order to prove that our religion is true. If this man or anyone else becomes Muslim, he is the one who will benefit from that, and if he goes astray and disbelieves, then he is the one who will be harmed by that.

We remind you of the words of Allaah (interpretation of the meaning):
“Say: O you mankind! Now truth (i.e. the Qur’aan and Prophet Muhammad), has come to you from your Lord. So whosoever receives guidance, he does so for the good of his own self; and whosoever goes astray, he does so to his own loss; and I am not (set) over you as a Wakeel (disposer of affairs to oblige you for guidance)”
[Yoonus 10:108] “Verily, We have sent down to you (O Muhammad) the Book (this Qur’aan) for mankind in truth. So whosoever accepts the guidance, it is only for his ownself; and whosoever goes astray, he goes astray only for his (own) loss. And you (O Muhammad) are not a Wakeel (trustee or disposer of affairs, or guardian) over them”
[al-Zumar 39:41]

And Allaah knows best what the truth of the matter is. May Allaah send blessings on our Prophet Muhammad(PBUH).

Odd I thought the discovery of Pluto Lowell was British. OOps, I just realised the Lowell obseravatory here in the States was named after him. Must have been a Brit that first Discovered Neptune then, I remember back in my school years Uranus was refered to as the Telescope planet, because It was the First Planet that was discovered through the use of a telescope. Neptune was the Newspaper planet cause it was the first planet discovered that made headlines in the worlds newspapers and Pluto was the Mathematicians Planet, cuase it was existance was found through mathematical calculations about orbits and when a telescope was pointed to the area, Lowell had calculated that there should be a planet, there was Pluto. Actually the name Pluto did come from an acrynom coined by Lowell. He did play with words so that it ended up as Pluto. (maybe he was pals with Walt Disney)

My error Lowell calculated the existance of Pluto, but it was Tombaugh who first saw it.

Lowell's greatest contribution to planetary studies came during the last 8 years of his life, which he devoted to the search for Planet X, which was the designation for a planet beyond Neptune. The search continued for a number of years after his death at Flagstaff in 1916; the dwarf planet, named Pluto, was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. The symbol for the planet is a stylized "PL" (♇), chosen in part to honor Lowell.
