Mecca-Cola

Mecca-Cola is a cola-flavoured carbonated beverage. The flagship product of the Mecca Cola World Company, it is marketed as an alternative to U.S. brands such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola to politically minded consumers. The product's name contains the traditional Latin-alphabet transliteration of مكة المكرمة (Makkah al-Mukarramah, or "Mecca"), the holiest city of Islam located in Saudi Arabia.

It was launched in France, in November 2002, by entrepreneur Tawfik Mathlouthi, as a means of aiding Palestinians by tapping into demand for alternative products in European countries. He had been inspired by a popular Iranian soft drink, Zam Zam Cola, which was already successful in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, and in fact only decided to launch his own brand when he was unable to agree on terms for a distribution contract with Zam Zam. Mecca-Cola in turn inspired the creation of Qibla Cola.

Yeah, Qibla Cola is like the Pepsi to Mecca Cola's Coca Cola.

Kind of.

In a way.

I think its because the tag cola is common for other soft drinks too, and the word 'coca cola' was probably the name which was trademarked or copyrighted. Allaah Almighty knows best.

Somethin' like that.

To those wondering, the reason I'm... poking fun of Colas Mecca and Qibla is because I'm really not to fond of the names for one thing. It's like calling a drink Bethlehem Juice, Wailing Wall Water or Zion-ade.

'Bebsi' is the way people with strong Arab accents pronounce Pepsi. There's no 'P' syllable in Arabic you see. :)

Only in much the same way that Mussolini was more ethical than Hitler. I stick to fruit juice and mineral water.

A lesson the term 'Cola':

Cola is a sweet carbonated drink, usually with caramel coloring and containing caffeine.

Now, this means that Coca-Cola is not the creator of the word or the medium for colas. The name Coca-Cola is derived from the main ingredient in early Coca-Cola product; Coca -- that's right, up until the late 1970's, Coca-Cola contained the Coca -- the plant used to make Cocaine.

Other colas like Pepsi are named so because the drink had some kind of "pep" in it because it was a carbonated drink.

And the trend continues to Mecca and Qibla-Cola.

:)

I'm sure I'm gonna regret this. But how is Coca Cola particularly unethical?
