Hello justahumane,
It is not for anyone to interpret the Qur'an according to their whims. God did not just send people a revelation, He sent them as well a Prophet to explain that revelation and implement it so that its directives may be elucidated:
16:44 And We have also sent down unto you the reminder, that you may explain clearly to men what is sent down to them, and that they may give thought.
In addition, Muslims are to follow the understanding of the direct recipients of the message of Islam: the companions of the Prophet Muhammad pbuh.
Their understanding of the message was the correct understanding as it was endorsed by both God and His Messenger. Addressing the companions of the Prophet Muhammad pbuh, God says:
2:137 So if they believe in the same as you (pl.) believe in, then they have been [rightly] guided; but if they turn away, they are only in dissension, and Allah will be sufficient for you against them. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
And when asked about the identity of the saved group, the Prophet Muhammad pbuh replied, "[They are those who follow] That which I and my companions are upon" (Sunan Abî Dawûd, Sunan At-Tirmidhî, Sunan Ibn Mâjah)
