The Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, accused by the West of being a hardliner, announced yesterday handing out the first shares in Iran’s state industries to poor citizens; fulfilling a promise he made during his election.

President Nejad, whose surprise poll win in 2005 dealt a major blow to the country's enemies, promised his nation he’d distribute wealth more fairly than previous leaders to millions of Iranians, reported AFP.

In his first public statement after his victory, Mr Ahmadinejad said he seeks "building up an exemplary, developed and powerful Islamic society".

The Iranian President Ahmadinejad won 62% of the vote in the country’s last year elections, nearly twice that of his rival, ex-President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

The Iranian media reported yesterday that each of about 4.6 million needy people around the country will be receiving packages of the so-called “distribution of justice” shares in state industries believed to worth around 422 dollars.

“Distribution of justice shares is the just distribution of wealth among different classes,” the Iranian President said during a ceremony handing the first shares to beneficiaries, part of a plan approved by Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei, Iran's spiritual leader and the highest authority in the country, to sell off shares in 80 percent of the country’s state owned industries, after amending an article of the constitution that used to ban private ownership of state institutions.

“In the past years, the Iranian people did not benefit from a just distribution of wealth and therefore for many reasons there was distance between different classes,” President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said.

“Under this plan the trend of privatisation will be faster, the wealth and revenue will be distributed more evenly, (there will be an) increase in revenues which will eradicate poverty,” said Economy Minister Davoud Danesh-Jaafari.

If he wants to make things more "equal" maybe he should begin to speak to Stalin on the best ways to create an "equal" society by distributing all wealth evenly between doctors and garbage men.
