I like to consider myself a praticing Muslim with a full length beard, according to law (four fingers). At present i am training to be a customer services specialist. Only today my tutor told me i need to trim my beard in order to work in the field of retail. She told me that it is against policy and that it viloates health and safety. Theres no way in the world i am shaving or trimming my beard. How can i get around this. Does anybody know law? or any rights i may have to protect my religious freedom?

I am looking not on advice, because i know a 100% this beard is here to stay but rather, i would like somebody in the know to show me how to combat this "health and safety" issue.

I am sure we are not allowed to tie the beard as the Jews did that. & to the other questioner, i have applied at Asda on numerous occassions. With the customer service skills i hope to really put my foot in the door.

Actually Asda has the best equal oppurtunities. But
they do have a trim the beard policy.

I need a working bearded brother to post here to tell me how his employer lets him excercize his religous freedoms. The big burning question is "is there any?" or is it a fact that there is no such thing as religous freedom unless you remain unemployed?

I cant understand why gays and lesbians have so many rights in the workplace but religous rights seem small. Maybe my conclusion is wrong but hey! what are you people here for?

wait am confused you workin in the costumer service department, how is that health and safety? you might choke on ur beard? lol

Anyhow, I know a brother, well I have seen him in a shop stackin shelfs.

Also my advise, groom your beard, keep it tidy, i dont mean trim i jus mean comb it and wet it, like dont look trampy or nothing aite :p

Asda? Are you working at the checkout? I can see an obvious health and safety issue they will raise for long beards there.

In general, they're covering their butts in case you get your beard trapped in something and decide to sue them. I doubt it's some form of discrimination. If it was discrimination, they'd ask you to shave it off.

Oh just tell them you are a grown man and can look after your beard perfectly well and reassure them that it wont get as big as Santas. And if they have a problem with your beard they better not get a Santa in at Christmas time.

To Isa:

Working in any situation where you are working as part of a team or dealing with the general public requires skills in customer services. There two types of customer. The external customer and the internal customer. Exteranal customers are the general public whilst the internal range from your boss, your workmates, and other branches etc.

It is highly dangerous for the following reasons:
  • It might be caught between two cans of food
  • A dog might eat it
  • A mad barber may invade the shop and beat you up so that they can shave it
  • A security guard might 'mistake' you for a terrorist and shoot you a couple of times
:D

Seriously, I think it's not really dangerous at all, and the company just doesn't want to get in legal trouble if some strange accident does happen to occur. Same with hair, they make people tie it back even when they are not working with dangerous machines.

You know, back in the old days they used to use bands on their beards if they had a big one. So instead of a girl using a band on her hair, you use it on your beard.

Me? I dont have a , umm.. full beard yet, cause I cant grow a full beard when it doesnt grow, heh..

I will be working nightshifts in which the tills be be closed - so no booze handling there - and i will be working (insha'Allah) on other aisles but the bws (beerwinespirts) aisle in which they have the most trustable member working on that one, thanks for your concern - i am aware of the hadith which states that even the person who carries alcohol is cursed.

Oh yeh! big insha'Allahs and your duaas please, i have been bashing at Asdas doors for over six months and i refuse to give up. I will eventually get the job insha'Allah WITH MY BEARD!

BREAKING NEWS ;D

Well what do you know... I've just spoken to a Customers Services staff at Asda (Birmingham) and I was told that there is no health and safety policy regarding full beards - even if you're handling food that is!

The woman I spoke to seemed a bit shocked when I told her 'my bro' had been told to trim his beard. She said it definitely isn't a health and safety issue.

She said you should ring the Head Office and ask to speak to a Colleague Representative there. Good luck!
