Is it permissible to take off the khimar in front of a blind man?

Question:
Is it ok to take off the kimar and niqab infront of a blind man?.


Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

There is nothing wrong with a woman taking off her niqab or khimar in front of a blind man.



It was narrated from Faatimah bint Qays (may Allaah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told her to observe her ‘iddah in the house of Umm Shareek (that was when her husband died), then he said: “She is a woman whom my companions visit. Observe your ‘iddah in the house of Ibn Umm Maktoom, for he is a blind man and you can take off your garment.”
Narrated by Muslim (1480). In another report it says: “If you take off your khimar he will not see you.”





Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked: What is the ruling on observing hijab in front of a blind teacher?



He replied:



There is no hijab in front of a blind teacher because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to Faatimah bint Qays: “Observe your ‘iddah in the house of Ibn Umm Maktoom, for he is a blind man and you can take off your garment.” End quote.


Fataawa Noor ‘ala al-Darb by Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (Fataawa al-Nisa’/ 170).





Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan said in al-Muntaqa min Fataawa al-Fawzaan (3/question no. 410):



The correct view – and Allaah knows best – is that she does not have to observe hijab in front of a blind man, i.e., covering her face in his presence. End quote.

this sahabi was ibn um maktum (razi Allahu anhu).

I had read that the case of fatima bint Qais(razi Allahu anha) was a special one.....a bit different from others, so its not applicable to every woman.If you notice, she spent her iddah period not in her husbands house, but Prophet Muhammad (sallallaho alaihay wa aalaiyhee wa sallam) asked her to observe her iddah in Umm shareek's (razi Allahu anha) house.....but then asked her to stay in ibn maktum's (razi Allahu anhu) house.

Have a look at these Ahadith related to fatima bint qais(razi Allahu anhu).

On that 'Aisha sent a message to Marwan bin Al-Hakam who was the ruler of Medina, saying, "Fear Allah, and urge your brother) to return her to her house." Marwan (in Sulaiman's version) said, "Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Hakam did not obey me (or had a convincing argument)." (In Al-Qasim's versions Marwan said, "Have you not heard of the case of Fatima bint Qais?" 'Aisha said, "The case of Fatima bint Qais is not in your favour.' Marwan bin Al-Hakam said to 'Aisha, "The reason that made Fatima bint Qais go to her father's house is just applicable to the daughter of 'Abdur-Rahman."

salams but the point is... its a general rule that its not required to wear hijab infront of blind man.

if you read the hadith... even in english form.. the prophet said spend ur iddah at his place coz his a blind man' so she can take off her hijab.... otherwise why would the prophet send her 2him?

The basis of wearing the hijab is to stop a man's gaze coming upon a woman. A blind man obvioulsy will not be able to see the woman and thus it is possible for women not to wear the hijab infront of a blind man.

wow all these cases of blindness and situations when women of the prophet's (PBUH) time were woprried about taking off there niqab or khimar is like proof and it is soo deep masha'allah a very helpful hadith jazak'allah!

If you specifically referring to niqab, personally i don't know if its obligatory or not... but there is evidence that indicates it was worn byt he female companions alahu alam.
