The Earth is wide open to alien attack, a former Government advisor has warned. Nick Pope said the department that formally investigated UFO sightings had closed down, meaning unexplained phenomena were not being investigated. Mr Pope, who ran the Ministry of Defence UFO project from 1991 to 1994, said there had been a series of "highly credible" alien sightings and landings in the UK.
"The consequences of getting this one wrong could be huge," he said.
"If you reported a UFO sighting now, I am absolutely sure that you would just get back a standard letter telling you not to worry.

"Frankly, we are wide open - if something does not behave like a conventional aircraft now, it will be ignored.
"The X-Files have been closed down."
Mr Pope said those working for the MoD UFO project spend their time releasing formerly classified documents in answer to Freedom of Information requests from the media or members of the public.
The UFO expert resigned from his MoD post at the Directorate of Defence Security this week.
He said there was no evidence of UFO hostile intent - but it could not be ruled out.
"There has got to be the potential for that and one is left with the uneasy feeling that if it turned out to be so, there is very little we could do about it," he said.
"If you believe these things are extra terrestrial craft then you cannot rule out that what is happening is some kind of covert reconnaissance."
The MoD insisted that all UFO sightings were investigated for "evidence to suggest that UK airspace has been compromised by hostile or unauthorised air activity.
"Unless there is such evidence, the MoD doesn't attempt to positively identify what was seen."

It's going to be difficult to convince any government that they should be shelling out the money for some theoretical attack from space.

And it's also difficult to convince any crackpot that the government is not shelling out the money to protect against aliens...

Not him again! :D

Pope wasn't a "government advisor", he was a government employee who to all intents and purposes was "the department that formally investigated UFO sightings"; i.e the Ministry of Defence stuck him in a corner and gave him him a desk. Nice job to pull, I'll grant - I bet he made a tidy sum on expenses claims :D , but that was as far as it went. In case anybody is familiar with Civil Service grades he was an "Higher Executive Officer" which, trust me, is far less impressive than it sounds - he likes to claim that it equates to Major in the army which is complete tosh.. particularly when it comes to salary!

He can be safely ignored.

Well, it wasn't difficult to convince a couple of major governments to shell out money for some theoretical nuclear attack from Iraq.

I read in "Popular Mechanics" that the United States government has drawn up a plan on what to do in case of alien contact. What agencies will be in charge of securing the spacecraft, where the visitor will be quaranteened (possible alien viruses, see "War of the Worlds") etc. The plan was for an alien contact not an attack.

It's easy to make fun of them for something like this but if it ever did happen people would expect them to have a plan.

I doubt if there is any way to prepare for an uncertain event that will take place at an unexpected time, by an unknown means.

Did I just describe how most of us think of the final Judgement Day?

Perhaps our preperations are better suited for what each of us as individuals need to do to avoid any surprises or misgivings.

Oddly how few of us ever give a thought about Judgement day which we know will happen and become panic stricken at the thought of something that is a very remote possibility.

Bleh, nobody cares about UFO's anymore. They are so 60's. The new 3-letter abbreviation of choice is WMD. No wait, that went out of fashion a couple years back...

Don't worry though, they'll make a comeback, just like mullets and flares.

Since nuclear weapons are known to exist, it isn't quite on the same level as preparing for an alien invasion.
