View Full Version : World horrified

The world reacted with horrified shock yesterday to an Israeli army attack on Palestinian homes in the Gaza Strip that killed 18 civilians, eight of them children. Condemnations poured in from the United Nations, the European Union, the Middle East and Europe over what Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas called a "black day".

Of the quartet overseeing the moribund Middle East peace process - the EU, the UN, Russia and the United States - only Washington refrained from harsh criticism.

----------------------------------

Some are less equal than others
Here’s how the charade will play itself out. Over the next few weeks suicide attacks will take place in the occupied territories in response to yesterday’s cowardly Israeli massacre in Beit Hanun. Israeli civilians will probably die, and there will be mass uproar in the world media. CNN and Fox News will go into overdrive, with round the clock ‘balanced’ coverage.

The sheep from Washington and London will trot out the same tired, offensive lines about not dealing with terrorists and Israel having the right to ‘defend’ itself. Worst of all, people who know nothing about Middle Eastern politics, and care even less, will suddenly be transformed into seasoned experts and start pointing their fingers at those ‘**** Palestinian terrorists’ again.

Because, you know, terrorism exists in a vacuum. There are no reasons behind extemism except for the irrational hatred that exists in the hearts of those freedom-hating savages for the peace-loving people of Israel, and the west of course. ‘These’ people take up terrorism because it’s fun, they just love blowing themselves up. It’s got nothing to do with being oppressed for 50 years, with being humiliated beyond all human tolerance on a daily basis. Nothing at all to do with seeing your parents, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters mutilated while you have to suffer in silence.

But let’s give everyone the chance to show their humanity here. Will the moral indignation from the so-called politically correct ‘neutrals’ slamming Israel for the deaths of innocent women and children, materialise? Not likely. The Palestinians will be condemned, and no amount of Israeli oppression or crimes will justify their reactions. Two wrongs don’t make a right, we’ll be told. But only if it’s in Israel’s favour. When Palestinian children die, there will be no sanctions, no invasions, no ‘wars on’ anything. It’s collateral damage, a necessary evil in the campaign to rid the world of these horrible ‘terrorists’.

There is a difference between saying and doing. Israel has been killing Palestinians, bulldozing their homes in the West Bank, kicking familes, women with young children out of their homes, etc. We are horrified at this incident which is pure evil, we dont condone violence against Palestine or Israel. The leaders of Palestine and Israel need to get together and form peace talks, for the civilians if nothing else.

I suppose Israel would do all these things because they are just plain evil and mean? Or have these things been done in response to attacks on their population, in the never-ending cycle of violence.?

Your post is correct in every word, except you left out the point that palestinians are equally to blame.

It just seems to be a hopeless cycle of neverending atrocity and violence. I know that when you give up there will never be a solution, but I don't see any competent negotiators from either side. I know that many Palestinians celebrated when Sharon was incapacitated due to his stroke, but Sharon was a stabilizing force. He was also making concessions and things were beginning to change for the better. Then the Hamas election and the war in Lebanon brought everything back to square one if not further back.

True or not, palestinians are viewed by some as ungrateful. And this makes the hardline Israelis unwilling to compromise. The situation during the first Gulf War really angered many in Israel, even arabs.
Iraq shot scud missles at Israel (which had no part in the war). Israel distributed gas masks not only to Israelis, but also to the palestinians. Yet many palestinians cheered from the rooftops as scuds hit Israel, and called on Saddam to use chemical weapons on Israel. This may have been a minority, but the media being what it is, well, needless to say, it didn't look good.

There are issues I dont agree with the Palestinian authority on, but the real victims are not the PA leaders or Israeli leaders, it is the Palestinian civilians and to some extent Israeli civilians. Israel may claim to have reason to carry out "operations" in Gaza, ie to stop "rocket attacks", but at the same time it is doing worse in the West Bank than the rocket attacks do to Israel.

Even many Israeli solders are horrified at what Israel is doing in occupied territories (West bank, East Jerusalem etc)

The face of refusal in Israel is getting younger. More and more, young people are refusing to be a part of the occupation and violent control of the Occupied Territories and choosing conscientious objection over the IDF
^ Those kinds of people are the driving force for peace.

Keep all comments directed to the topic. This is a difficult topic as people do have emotional feelings about it. It is OK to state how you feel about statements, but attacks against ANY member is not tolerated.

Just direct all arguements against or for the Original Topic. Anything else is off topic.
