BBC

Ten countries have been violating a United Nations arms embargo to send weapons to Somalia, according to a UN-commissioned report.
  • Ethiopia
  • Eritrea
  • Djibouti
  • Egypt
  • Iran
  • Libya
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Syria
  • Uganda
  • Yemen

Seven countries - among them Iran and Syria - have supplied military personnel and weapons to the Union of Islamic Courts militia.

While three countries are helping arm Somalia's weak interim government.
Ethiopia, Uganda and Yemen are named as the countries supplying Somalia's interim government.
Ethiopia and Eritrea are named as the biggest violators of the arms embargo in Somalia, where there has not been a proper government for more than 15 years.
Many of the countries named in the report reject the accusations
What is most striking about this report is the detailed links between countries such as Iran, Syria and Lebanon and the Islamic Courts Union, says the BBC's Laura Trevelyan at the UN in New York.

For example, the authors say 720 Somali fighters went to Lebanon to help Hezbollah fight Israel in July.

Syria is said to have sent an aircraft full of guns to the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

Iran is reported to have sent three shipments of arms to Somalia between July and September.

One paragraph in the report says two Iranians were in Somalia looking into getting uranium in exchange for supplying arms.

No further details are offered. Iran wants uranium to further its nuclear programme, which it insists is peaceful, while western countries suspect Iran of wanting a nuclear bomb.

Weapon sales are a primary source of income for many of the African countries mentioned. I don't know whether these transactions took place or not, but I don't find the possibility as "lol" as the previous posters.

Not really. Ethiopia has a surplus of weapons from the United States, enough to carry on its fight against Eritrea. And Eritrea has good guerilla fighters, so sophisticated weaponry is almost useless.

Seems like a joke...;D...but its actually true! :uuh:

See how Syria AND Iran supported Hezbollah -- and see how BOTH also support the Union of Islamic Courts -- note the connection!

You are correct. These transactions are taking place. Eritrea wants an Islamist group in power so they can become a thorn to Orthodox Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is supporting the secular transitional government to both gain access to the Sea of Aden AND suppress Islam in the region.

If the Union of Islamic Courts wins control over Somalia, Ethiopia will be in major trouble as they are surrounded by Sudan, Tanzania, Eritrea, Kenya, and the newly-Islamized Somalia -- not to mention Ethiopia's own Muslim population (50%) consisting mainly of Oromians -- an rival ethnic group.

^ i don't believe that report bro and many of the horn of africa experts feel the same way

they just want to connect Iran with the Islamic Courts that controll the Uranium rich regions of Somalia

If the allegations about the Hizbullah links and Iran's uranium quest are true, the report would vindicate those in the west who view the rise of the Islamic courts as a threat to world peace.

But several Horn of Africa analysts say these and other claims in the report appear exaggerated and lack evidence.

A diplomatic source who follows Somalia and asked not to be named said he feared the 80-page report could become a "very useful propaganda tool" for hawks in the west.

Matt Bryden, a regional consultant to the International Crisis Group, expressed similar reservations. "We need to treat many of these claims with caution until we see firm evidence," he said.

The four-man monitoring group is mainly based in Nairobi and relies on intelligence from Somalia. The team is respected, although some of its previous reports have been seen by some as alarmist. The latest covers the period from May 5, a month before Sics took control of the capital, Mogadishu.

the Meles Zenawi regime is crumbling from the inside hated by both christians and muslims and this little adventure is only to secure aid from Uncle Sam but if you look at the recent stand of the US it's changing and it's not in for the same adventure as Meles Zenawi so he just lost it's sugar daddy

EMF) 11 Sep. 2006 -- Son of the renowned Afar spiritual leader Sultan Alimirah, Ambassador Hanfare Alimirah has defect to America making the total number of defectees to Sixty-three, Sources said. Ambassador Hanfare Alimirah was a Charge D’Affaires; Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary in Kuwait. Another diplomat, Mesfin Mideksa, first Secretary in Brussels has reportedly been in Maryland, USA meeting with lawyers to facilitate his asylums.

Dr. Biruk Hailu, Plenipotentiary and Ato Gizachew Bizuayehu, Counselor in Paris have been reportedly left the regime for political asylums in the USA. According to our sources from India, another diplomat, Eyerusalem Bekele, secretary in India has also defected Meles Zenawi's brutal regime.

Sixty-two diplomats and staff members from various Ethiopian Embassies and Consular Offices left their job over the last three months. The total number of diplomats who left the regime after the May 2005 election is more than twice than the number in this list, which is believed to constitute nearly 75% of the diplomatic staff.

Two commission members, who were assigned by Meles Zenawi’s “Inquiry Commission” to investigate the massacres against demonstrators in June and November 2005, have reportedly left for Germany with all documents which expose the regime itself of using excessive force against civilians.

EMF (Washington)- Wife of Kassahun Ayele, TPLF Ambassador to the United States of America has decided not to return back home to protest the gross human right abuses by Meles regime, sources said. Ambassador Kassahun Ayele, whose term finished by the end of this week, has been called by the TPLF authorities to Ethiopia. He has been serving the TPLF regime since 1993. His wife w/o Haregewein Abebe and his two doughters will remain in the United States but the fate of Kassahun Ayele is not yet known.

EMF (Amsterdam)- The TPLF Ambassador to London, Ato Fisseha Adugna, has defected to the USA, a reliable source told EMF.

This confirms the suspicions that something was about to happen since Ato Fisseha had recently sent away his wife, son & daughter to the USA.

Also the Press Officer at the Ethiopian Embassy in London, Ato Wagaye Birhanu, also defected to America two weeks ago. The former Press Officer at the Ethiopian Embassy in London, Ato Efrem Mehrete-Ab has also defected and sought political asylum in the USA. Read More ...

Ato Fisseha is an important member of the establishment having served 8 years as a councilor in USA Ethiopian embassy prior to five years as ambassador in London.

This is good news for those struggling for the oppressed people of Ethiopia, as it confirms the gradual breakdown of the Meles brutal regime.

Several reports are coming to EMF that confirms the defect of top government officials.

TPLF Diplomats in Holland

Two professional diplomats have also defected earlier from the Netherlands that made the activity of the office very difficult. Source close to the consulate office in The Hague told EMF that the consular is stuffing its office with persons who do not have work permit in the Netherlands, the criteria being only their ethnic identity. Other diplomats in The Hague, including loyal TPLF servant Ato Mohamed Berhan (Zimam, Alex and Nohomi) are sending their families to London. This indicates that the remaining members of the consular are also preparing to defect the Meles regime.

Top Diplomats

Diplomat Workyie Birye, a chief Ethiopian councilor at European Union has defected to USA to protest Meles crackdown on dissidents.

Source told EMF that Mr. Henok Mengistu, chief legal councilor at the Ministry of foreign affairs has defected to the USA.

Ethiopian partnership delegation seeks asylum

Four Ethiopian politicians who were on an official visit to Dublin have applied for asylum rather than return home, it emerged today.

The men were on a six-day visit to launch a partnership between their towns, Werabe and Butajira, and South Dublin County Council.

The council said its officials had gone to meet the men on March 27 when they were due to fly home to Ethiopia.

“Unfortunately they didn’t turn up for that meeting and we subsequently discovered they had applied for asylum in Dublin,” said spokesman Abe Jacob.

The partnership programme was designed to build up the skills and experience of government officials in Ethiopia in delivering services.

According to the Irish Examiner, the four men are from the ruling party in Ethiopia and had been staying at the Clarion Hotel in Dublin.

The Ethiopian Embassy has expressed its embarrassment about the development and has contacted the council to seek its continued support for the partnership.

“The universal view is that we should continue with the project, that the project is bigger than any set of individuals. We’re determined to press ahead with the project,” said Mr Jacob.

Ethiopian officer defects to Germany

Sept 24, 2006 (BERLIN) — Defections in the Ethiopian armed forces continue unabated. The latest to defect is Maj. Tesfaye Yemane, an officer in the Ethiopian army, the opposition Ethiopian Review website reported.

Maj. Tesfaye told Germany radio (Deutsche Welle) the Amharic service Wednesday 20 September that he is seeking political asylum in Germany, where he was taking a six-month course.

Tesfaye, who served in the army for 15 years, said that he decided to defect because the atrocities the Meles regime is currently perpetrating on the people of Ethiopia has bothered his conscience.

Several other officers are taking various steps in opposition to the injustice by the regime against the people, Tesfaye said in his interview with Germany radio.

He added, the people of Ethiopia are currently living in a hell-like condition.

In the past two months alone, two generals, several colonels, and other high-ranking officers have defected, and most of them joined member organizations of the Alliance for Freedom & Democracy.

Brig. Gen. Kemal Geltu defected to Eritrea with with 150 Ethiopian soldiers on 10 August. Since, he was followed by several defections.

Asmara, 18 September 2006 - Two senior Ethiopian Army officers who recently joined the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) abandoning the TPLF regime said that serving the repressive regime is a historical crime.

In an interview with Eritrean Television, Brig. General Hailu Gonfa, who was a senior official in the Ethiopian Defense Ministry and Col. Gemechu Ayana, commander of the 8th Mechanized Force said that the Ethiopian people have gone through untold suffering over the past 15 years and that they have been repeatedly putting forth demands to alter such a state of affairs but to no avail. The two senior army officers went on to say that as their demand fell on deaf ears, they were compelled to raise up arms against the regime and thus join the popular struggle.

Brigadier General Hailu Gonfa

They stressed that the Army being part of the people should serve a popularly elected government and not individuals. The two officers further pointed out that as the majority of members the Ethiopian Army have come to understand this way of thinking, they are being subjected to heinous repression on the part of TPLF cadres.

Stating that the regime is making futile attempts to pit the Ethiopian people against one another on the basis of nationality, ethnicity and regionalism so as to prevent them from fostering unity, Brig. General Hailu Gonfa disclosed that this same divisive policy is being practiced by cadres within the Army who have no sense of patriotism at all.

Colonel Gemechu Ayana

Recalling the defeat of the TPLF in the 2005 elections, Col. Gemechu Ayana emphasized on his part that serving this illegal clique is a historical crime, and as such it is naive to think that such a brutal regime would change its ways.

In a message they conveyed to the Ethiopian people, the two senior Army officers called on the population to continue their resistance in an intensified manner. They particularly reminded the country’s Armed Forces to direct their weapons against the bloodthirsty regime

Top Ethiopian judge flees threats

One of Ethiopia's most senior judges, Teshale Aberra, has left the country following "continued harassment" from the government, he has told the BBC.

Ahmed Gurey,

I understand that you'd rather accept local analysts over the UN -- even I tend to go that way sometimes. But the UN has confidential reports that local analysts don't have. And this makes a lot of sense in many fields, so for now I'm holding on to it.

I really enjoyed the last post of yours with the many photos and reportings, good work.

yeah but like Matt Bryden said those monitor groups that compiled that 80 page report are based in Nairobi (Kenya) and aren't reporting directly from Somalia itself

many of the hearsay reports they are receiving is from Government officials

two weeks ago they tried to accuse the Islamic Courts of plotting to suicide bomb themselves troughout East africa

this tactic is used by the TPLF regime in Ethiopia where they sabotage malls and blow up places like Jimma only to portray the OLF( Oromo Liberation Front) as terrorists to the world

wich is not true!

the Kenyan muslims quikly dismissed the before mentioned ''claim''

source

you are right these reports could be true but i'm skeptical when it comes to UN reports as do many horn of africa experts who have been following the political landscape of that region for many decades.

False accusations from crusaders on a islamic country. This is a major example that the west cannot stand muslims having a shariah country. Every since Somalia government came in place america and its allies have done everything in power to topple them. Remeber when american media started to lie about the Somalian government so people would not suppot them.
America and the west can do whatever in there power to topple the Somalia government they can use from their advanced technology to spreading lies (which is something america is known for). But Somalian government has the major weapon The all mighty Allah S.W.T surely he will crush the crusaders easily if Allah wills.

Remeber muslims we should take the word of the practising muslim over a lieing kaffir who wants nothing but destruction for you!

Crusaders? Isn't time to lose this old tired cliche? Those "lieing kaffirs" in the U.N. aren't exactly known to support U.S. or British foreign policy, and the reports that come out of the U.N. are normally very accurate. If you think the U.S. or Great Britain are having discussions about how important it is to topple the almighty Somali Islamic state you should drink a cup of coffee or something.

If you live in america then i hope you remeber the time when Somalian government and their islamic law was introduced to america. The media and the american governemnet blamed them for working with Al Qaeda. But later some members had aruged to give them a chance. American claim was wherever there is Shariah there is Al Qaeda.

Both Islamicboy and Keltoi have good points,

But I actually believe that the UN leans closer to the center than the US. If anything, the UN is a bit anti-American, and that's debatable.

...just my opinion...

If Iran were to be attacked (god forbid) by hmm America and Iranian president decides to instead attack israel. Do you think UN would do much more different from what they did to America? Pretty much UN cannot do anything to America and its allies its a well known fact. Yet UN roars like a lion when the weak countries which dont like america have done same or little to what America has done. Ever since the war on terror (islam) has started America broke every single geneva Law. I would like to see Iran or anyother anti American country pull something like that and get away.

You seem to be a little confused as to what the U.N. is. The U.N. doesn't have an army and the only bark in its bite is the U.S military. That wasn't supposed to be the way it worked, but that is the way it works now. I also find it mildly amusing that you state the U.S. has broken "every Geneva convention law", which is patently false. Not to mention that the enemies of the U.S. follow no laws of warfare. In reality, Iran can do just about anything it wants. The only thing stopping them is the threat of war from the U.S. and the U.K. So far that hasn't seemed to stop them either, so unless some drastic change in Iranian policy takes place we are probably going to see a conflict somewhere down the road. The U.N. couldn't stop a cow from breaking down a farmer's fence.

The US did provided intelligence to the warlords, and even arms, but through OTHER sources and means -- so its not officially recognized as a direct arms pusher in the conflict.

They buy weapons from Russia and pass them along. But Russia has nothing to do with this, the listed nations have ownership over the bought weapons.

Those nations are not middlemen, they directly sponser the fighting groups (Semi-Secular Transitional Gov't vs. Union of Islamic Courts).
