Assalam-o-alaikum.

We believe in Allah and He says in the Quran to our Beloved Prophet Muhammad{saas} that we muslims should pray to Allah and He answers our supplication.

I have almost never had any prayer of mine answered although I am still waiting and working.

Not tending to be negative but I have seen and continue to see people pray everyday but Allah never seems to answer them.

If only Prophets had their prayers answered then why should we pray for something? Why not just accept whatever we have been destined to have in life and never ask for anything in this world??? Are we so pathetic in Allah's eyes that He has decided to ignore us?

Am I missing something or I am not alone!!!

Wassalam.

Selam aleykum brother, first of all, mashAllah, good to hear your prayers aren't answered. right now you're probably thinking I'm out of my mind, but hear me out :)

Allah subhana wa ta'ala advises us and wants us to pray to him. However he chooses not to answer all prayers right away. Some will be answered in this life and some will be answered in the next life. The messenger of Allah subhana wa ta'ala reports: " Allah shall never ignore a dua from a believer, Wereto he shall explain this for him with the following: He shall give it to him on this earthly life or in the hereafter. Hereto the believer shall reply: I desire that nothing of my dua was granted in this world."

Carefull, I translated this from a dutch translation that I had in a book at home, so translation might not be 100%. I someone could find a recognised english translation of this dua it'd be greatly apreciated :)

Anyway, I guess this shows why I replied mashaAllah to your post.
If you are afraid there is something else going on, remember there are some requirements for dua to be heard. For example eating food that is haram will negate your dua. Or if you aren't praying 5 times a day and so on, that might also be the cause.

This may not be helpful to you, as I cannot give you the Islamic perspective.

I have heard it said that God hears and answers all our prayers - but in a way which he in his great wisdom knows to be beneficial to us ... not necessarily in the way we expected and wished it to happen!

I hope that makes sense.

Peace :)

Yea that's right. I also advise you to be patient. Humans may hasten in life but not Allah. Allah love those who have patience and insha Allah, who knows that what you're undergoing is just a test from Allah to test your patience, and know the limit of your Imaan. Is your imaan solid or weak!

Insha Allah have patience!

Greetings and peace be with you Mateen;

I believe that the prayers answered are the ones that will help you achieve an eternal life after death. I think if you pray for things like happiness, wealth, passing exams, your health; these are the things that will help you in this life.

But all these worldly things we pray for pass away when we die, and they may not help us towards a greater life after death.

Maybe God answers all our prayers in a way that he knows will eventually benefit us more for ever lasting life.

In the spirit of searching

Read Du'a The Weapon of the Believer by Yasir Qadhi.

Then ask yourself the same question.

Assalam-o-alaikum.

It depends on what you're asking for.

I remember when I was younger I'd ask to be a millionaire lol, but growing up what use is being a milionaire if your stupid at school and can't work yourself up?? (I wasn't stupid at school, I'm just saying..)

The best thing to have is patience. It's enough you were created by Allah subhana wa ta'ala as a human being and that you were guided to be a Muslim.

If what you ask for is materialistic objects, then remember there is no significance for them in this world. When you leave this dunyaa your hands are going to be just as empty as when you arrived. He tests us in miraculous ways, and if you EXPECT to be given something that you asked for, then you'll always be expecting to get more. The best of all pleasures is getting it when you don't expect it, right? Your prayers will only be to ask for something. Why do you expect to be rewarded everytime you pray?? Its not a favor you are doing for Allah, rather its supposed to be an obligation upon you as a Muslim. The best thing about salaah is that Allah hears everything in your heart, He knows all of your intentions and He answers you when you sincerely ask for Him subhanallah wa allahu akbar! WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT!?

If what you ask for is nonmaterialistic..for example good health, intelligience etc, then you need to work on yourself from the inside out inshallah. Strengthen your iman and have a lot of patience. Allah isn't going to make you a genius over night (Allahu A'lem tho, He isn't incapable of doing it); however, if you remain patient while your sick, for example,, and never let your iman down, truly Allah will reward you with something great for your jihad (struggle), but if your asking "why me Allah!, let me die..i hate life!" then you aren't getting what you're supposed to out of life. Reality check.

It says in the Quran, when you call upon Allah He will answer you. If you have that iman you will feel it. I dunno its indescribable, but many times I've found myself crying after salaah. Whatever problems you have just leave it to Allah subhana wa ta'ala.

Your life can't be any worse than sayidna ayoub or Muhammed (pbut) and when i say worse I mean the way they were treated and the stuff they went through. In a way we all admire them so much, not because of what they went through, but how they stood up through those tough times subhanallah.

Ekhi, you need an iman booster. Renew your shahada, and seclude yourself from the whispers of Shaytan by reciting Quran inshallah.

If only Prophets had their prayers answered then why should we pray for something? Why not just accept whatever we have been destined to have in life and never ask for anything in this world??? Are we so pathetic in Allah's eyes that He has decided to ignore us?
Ekhi, the purpose of prayer is not to pray FOR SOMETHING, its to pray TO SOMETHING. You pray to Allah subhana wa ta'ala. Everyone is destined to a life, but you also have free-will. You have to live your life, not just stand like an idiot (in general, not directly) and watch it pass by. Here's a sad fact: When you aren't there for Allah, He's still there for you and unfortunately He doesn't need us- we need Him.

Not tending to be negative but I have seen and continue to see people pray everyday but Allah never seems to answer them.
How do you know?? You don't. Every human being has different needs and wants. Only Allah knows true intentions, what's best for each of His Creation.

Bro, a few reasons why dua's [supplications] might not get responded to is if what you're asking for is sinful, good deeds raise the dua quicker and sins may cause barriers, or if the person is impatient in their dua's:

The Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said:

"The supplication of a slave continues to be granted as long as he does not supplicate for a sinful thing or for something that would cut off the ties of kinship and he does not grow impatient.'' It was said: "O Messenger of Allah! What does growing impatient mean?'' He (Peace be upon him) said, "It is one's saying: `I supplicated again and again but I do not think that my prayer will be answered.' Then he becomes frustrated (in such circumstances) and gives up supplication altogether.'' (Sahih Muslim)

Assalamu alaikum.

Here's something I will like to share. It is only time I really prayed for something & I was content with what I got.
I became more practicing suddenly (woken up) from 4 month till my end of my final year at Uni. At this time I was doing my Final year Project (Lab-based) titled:

"Detection and investigation of the Molecular Nature of Low-molecular-mass Cobalt(II), Nikel(II) and Copper(II) ions in osteoarthritic Knee-joint Synovial Fluid"

which contributed to large amount to my final grade. To the point my addiction to Islam from this time really affected my studies and my the exams (to the point of distraction, e.t.c) I had to revise for. So I did the best under this condition (Actually hardly any seriouse study). Normally I know when I do well in an exam & when I won't do so well, but this was one of the time I was not so confident & and surmise the latter.

After I finally finished my exams and my project. I prayed to Allah (s.w.t) to giet me a good grade. Not asking for what the grade to be (e.g) but just praying to get me a good grade.

Alhamdulillah I got a good grade. I got a Upper Second which is 2:1 (one below First.

So sometime one need's to pray and struggle towards one goals, and be content with what Allah(s.w.t) gives you. Inshallah you will succeed.

I personally do not relate (reveal) myself to anyone much. Hope this help

This might also be helpful inshaallah:

Question:
Why doesn't allah answer our duas ?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

“Du’aa’s and ta’awwudhaat [prayers seeking refuge with Allaah] are like a weapon, and a weapon is only as good as the person who is using it; it is not merely the matter of how sharp it is. If the weapon is perfect and free of faults, and the arm of the person using it is strong, and there is nothing stopping him, then he can lay waste the enemy. But if any of these three features is lacking, then the effect will be lacking accordingly.”

(al-Daa’ wa’l-Dawaa’, p. 35).

From this it will be clear that there is an etiquette and rulings which must be fulfilled, in the du’aa’ and in the person making the du’aa’. There are also things that may prevent the du’aa’ reaching Allaah or being answered – these things must be removed from the person making the du’aa’ and from the du’aa’. When all of these conditions are fulfilled, then the du’aa’ may be answered.

1. Sincerity in making du’aa’. This is the most important condition. Allaah has commanded us to be sincere when making du’aa’, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“So, call you (O Muhammad and the believers) upon (or invoke) Allaah making (your) worship pure for Him (Alone) (by worshipping none but Him and by doing religious deeds sincerely for Allaah’s sake only and not to show off and not to set up rivals with Him in worship)” [Ghaafir 40:14].

Sincerity in du’aa’ means having the firm belief that the One upon Whom you are calling – Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted – is alone Able to meet your need, and it also means avoiding any kind of showing off in your du’aa’.

2. Repentance and turning back to Allaah. Sin is one of the main reasons why du’aa’s are not answered, so the person who is making du’aa’ should hasten to repent and seek forgiveness before he makes du’aa’. Allaah tells us that Nooh (peace be upon him) said:

“I said (to them): ‘Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is Oft-Forgiving; He will send rain to you in abundance, And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.’ ” [Nooh 71:10-12]

3. Beseeching, humbling oneself, hoping for Allaah’s reward and fearing His punishment. This is the spirit, essence and purpose of du’aa’. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret. He likes not the aggressors” [al-A’raaf 7:55].

4. Urgently beseeching and repeating the du’aa’, without getting exasperated or bored; this is achieved by repeating the du’aa’ two or three times. Restricting it to three times is preferable, in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) liked to say a du’aa’ three times and ask for forgiveness three times. This was narrated by Abu Dawood and al-Nasaa’i.

5. Making du’aa’ at times of ease, and saying more du’aa’s at times of plenty. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Remember Allaah during times of ease and He will remember you during times of hardship.” Narrated by Ahmad.

6. Seeking to draw closer to Allaah by calling upon Him by His Most Beautiful Names and Sublime Attributes at the beginning of the du’aa’ or at the end. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allaah, so call on Him by them” [al-A’raaf 7:180].

7. Choosing the clearest and most concise words and the best of du’aa’s. The best of du’aa’s are the du’aa’s of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), but it is permissible to say other words according to the specific needs of a person.

Other aspects of the etiquette of making du’aa’, although they are not waajib (obligatory), are: to face the Qiblah; to make du’aa’ in a state of tahaarah (purity); to start the du’aa’ with praise of Allaah and blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). It is also prescribed to raise the hands when making du’aa’.

One of the things that helps to bring a response to du’aa’ is to seek the best times and places.

Among the best times is the time just before Fajr (dawn), the last third of the night, the last hour of Jumu’ah (Friday), when rain is falling, and between the Adhaan and iqaamah.

Among the best places are mosques in general, and al-Masjid al-Haraam [in Makkah] in particular.

Among the situations in which du’aa’ is more likely to be answered are: when one is mistreated or oppressed, when one is travelling, when one is fasting, when one is in desperate need, and when a Muslim makes du’aa’ for his brother in his absence.

Things which may prevent du’aa’ from being answered include:

1. When the du’aa’ is weak in itself, because it involves something inappropriate, or involves bad manners towards Allaah, may He be exalted, or it is inappropriate, which means asking Allaah for something which it is not permitted to ask, e.g. when a man asks to live forever in this world, or he asks for a sin or something haraam, or he prays that he will die, and so on. Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “A person's du’aa’s will continue to be answered so long as he does not pray for something sinful or for the breaking of family ties.” Narrated by Muslim.

2. When the person who is making du’aa’ is weak in himself, because he is faint-hearted in his turning towards Allaah. This may be either because of bad manners towards Allaah, may He be exalted – such as raising his voice in du’aa’ or making du’aa’ in the manner of one who thinks he has no need of Allaah; or because he pays too much attention to the wording and tries to come up with unnecessarily ornate phrases, without paying attention to the meaning; or because he tries too hard to weep or shout without really feeling it, or he goes to extremes in that.

3. The reason why his du’aa’ is not answered may be because he has done something that Allaah has forbidden, such as having haraam wealth – whether it be food or drink or clothing or accommodation or transportation, or he has taken a haraam job, or the stain of sin is still in his heart, or he is following bid’ah (innovation) in religion, or his heart has been overtaken by negligence.

4. Consuming haraam wealth. This is one of the major reasons why du’aa’s are not answered. Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “O people, Allaah is Good and only accepts that which is good. Allaah commanded the pious to follow the same commandments as He gave to the Messengers. He says (interpretation of the meaning):

‘O (you) Messengers! Eat of the Tayyibaat [all kinds of Halaal (lawful) foods which Allaah has made lawful (meat of slaughtered eatable animals, milk products, fats, vegetables, fruits)] and do righteous deeds. Verily, I am Well-Acquainted with what you do’ [al-Mu’minoon 23:51]

‘O you who believe (in the Oneness of Allaah — Islamic Monotheism)! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you with’ [al-Baqarah 2:172]

Then he mentioned a man who has travelled on a long journey and is dishevelled and covered with dust; he stretches forth his hands to the heaven, (saying) “O Lord, O Lord”, but his food is haraam, his drink is haraam, all his nourishment is haraam, so how can he du’aa’ be accepted?” Narrated by Muslim.

The man described by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had some of the characteristics which help du’aa’s to be answered – he was travelling and he was in need of Allaah, may He be exalted and glorified – but the fact that he consumed haraam wealth prevented his du’aa’ from being answered. We ask Allaah to keep us safe and sound.

5. Trying to hasten the response. Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The du’aa’ of any one of you will be answered so long as he is not impatient and says, ‘I made du’aa’ but it was not answered.’” Narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim.

6. Making the du’aa’ conditional, such as saying, “O Allaah, forgive me if You will” or “O Allaah, have mercy upon me if You will.” The person who makes du’aa’ has to be resolute in his supplication, striving hard and earnestly repeating his du’aa’. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Let not any one of you say, ‘O Allaah, forgive me if You will, O Allaah, have mercy on me if You will.’ Let him be resolute in the matter, whilst knowing that no one can compel Allaah to do anything.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim.

In order for du’aa’s to be answered, it is not essential to adhere to all of these points and be free of all that could prevent one’s du’aa’s from being answered. That is something which happens very rarely. But one has to try hard and strive towards achieving this.

Another important point is to realize that the response to the du’aa’ may take different forms: either Allaah will respond and fulfil the desire of the person who made the du’aa’, or He will ward off some evil from him because of the du’aa’, or He will make something good easy for him to attain because of it, or He will save it with Him for him on the Day of Resurrection when he will be most in need of it. And Allaah knows best.

Greetings and peace be with you Skillganon;

Thank you for sharing your experience with us about passing your exams. You were saying that Islam was more important to you at the time and you possibly spent too much time with your faith. In a way you seem to be saying to God that your faith is more important to you than passing an exam. It seems that God is rewarding you for this. Maybe this experience has increased your faith and trust in God.

I can relate a similar story that has increased my faith and trust in a loving and caring God.

Just over a year ago I suffered with an uncomfortable cough for about three months, friends and family kept saying that I should go to a doctor. But being a man I kept ignoring them for ages. One day my wife was getting fed up with hearing me cough and insisted I call the doctor, so I made an appointment for the following afternoon.

The following morning I went to church and it was the feast day of a Bishop who was the patron saint of healing the throat. We all went up to the priest and had our throats blessed.

During the blessing I said to myself, do I trust in God to heal my throat, or should I trust in the doctor to heal my throat? When I got home I phoned up and cancelled the doctors appointment and trusted that God would heal me.

I stopped coughing that day, it has had a profound affect on me. Prayer seems to work in a strange way, it almost seems that you have to do something to prove to yourself and to prove to God that you trust in him. Prayers seem to work if it somehow increases your own faith in some way.

It seems that you have to take risks and do things that seem against human nature to trust in God. Maybe we have to examine more prayerfully what our motives are in the things that we pray for?

But when prayers are answered there is this profound feeling that we have to change ourselves and strive to do things more in God's way.

In the spirit of praying to one God.
