Warmest greetings everyone,

To augment my understanding of the Qur'an and Hadith, and to give some structure to my independent study in this area, I've been fortunate to stumble across studying-islam.org and it appears to be worthwhile signing up for a number of the free online courses. I just wondered if anyone has had any experience with these courses and if they have found them to be worthwhile?

I have tried try to register an account with them but it keeps coming back as 'registration failed' so I'm not even able at this time to explore deeper.
Many thanks for your continued help and guidance
Peace
Robert

i enrolled and started a course a while back. it's cool that they have both in english and in urdu.
however, when i posted the link, i was told by The Guardians of LI that:
"MOD: THE REFERRED LINK IS FOR A MOVEMENT THAT REJECTS MANY AUTHENTIC AHADEETH, EVEN IN BUKHARI AND MUSLIM. THEY DENY THE MAHDI, THE COMING OF ISA, THE PUNISHMENT OF THE GRAVE, THE LIST GOES ON AND ON.
ps. THEY'RE AGAINST MADH'HABS TOO."
just so you know.

well, i have the religion of islam and introduction to the hadith. i am still on the 1st one and taking it slow because i'm using it for urdu study at the same time. you can only take 3 courses at a time.
i don't know enough to evaluate the material, but it looks good to me, tho i am keeping the mod's comment in mind. but i like it so far.
they have interesting articles too.

snakelegs - Thank you for your valuable input and your words of warning.

I think it is impossible to find any form of educational material (or educator) which (who) does not have some degree of inherent bias injected into it and this of course is perhaps most prevelant in material of a religious and/or historical nature.

Ultimately though it is up to the student to remain vigilant and open minded and to extract only what he/she finds of value as no matter how bias study material is, there is always something of value to take from it. That's why I personally have no issue with using material from whatever source it originates from, and no matter how one-sided and bias it is (not that I'm suggesting that material from studying-islam.org is one sided or bias). If nothing else it gives me a different perspective on things and I feel that's important for building a more rounded view.

However I also think it is of huge value to be aware of any religious/political slant that could be present before studying the material and for taking the time to do this I thank you profusely.

I'm still more than happy to go along with the course as it looks well structured and of great value to someone who has little understanding of the subject i.e. me. I wish you continued success with your studies and I will be sure to keep anyone who may be interested (as if :o)) updated with my progress.
Peace
Robert

i think like you do, but i know that some here are concerned about such things, so they should know.
i am learning from it and i appreciate that it's there.
good luck to you.
the wonderful thing about learning, is that once you start to learn about a certain subject, you become more and more interested. personally, i believe in drinking from many fountains.

hey rburdock,
how are you doing in your studies? i managed to complete one course. (in english and urdu).
right now i am really bogged down in the urdu version of "introduction to the hadith". the english is not a problem, but i am taking them in both languages so i can learn urdu better and this one is really hard for me.
if i am ever prepared enough to take the test (i may die of old age first!), the next course i'm doing is "understanding the sunnah". unlike most muslims i've run into, they seem to think the sunnah and the hadith are not identical, which i always thought they were. it gets confusing, but it's all interesting.
i like their material very well, and think it is a great site.
[to the muslims here, see ansar's comment about the site on post #8.]
