200.000 Dead - 2.000.000 Refugees.

We all know what is happening in Darfur right now. Here is somebody (George Clooney) who is famous and taking the initative and trying to use his fame in the best way possible. Yes, some know-it-alls would say he's only doing it to gain more publicity & fame. Well, they would say that because they lack in human compassion so wouldn't see the point in trying to contribute to society in a positive way.

If every person who was famous contributed in some way or another to the many many sadly unfortunate events currently occuring, this world of ours could be that little bit more nicer to live in. Don't you agree?

God Bless Bob Geldoff and Bono and many others who use their fame to try to help the unfortunate.

You don't think it might have something to do with the 400,000 innocent people slaughtered there, then? Oddly, people became concerned when that started to happen.

Sure, there's probably oil there, but the idea nobody would bothered if it wasn't is absurd. Although maybe you have a point.. it seems to be the nations with the largest oil reserves that care the least. Maybe a good war will keep that oil in the ground rather than benefitting the people of Sudan, and keep the OPEC price up?

I don't know. Like where? Is there a conflict currently in the world which is as deadly as in Darfur? Maybe a few years ago in Congo or something. But there are few places where as many people are fleeing and dying.

This for ONCE is not about oil.

It's a humanitarian crisis. Muslim Janjaweed killing inferior black muslims.

I don't see anybody else intervening do you?

BTW - China supports them and their track record on human rights leaves much to be desired.

He was asked how can he try to get people to listen to him because he's no politician. He said he'll stand alongside Kofi and draw attention which ever way possible.

Can't wait for ''Oceans 13'' though.

There is NO such thing as a black Muslim or a regular Muslim. A Muslim is a Muslim, thats it! So plllllllllllllllzzzz stop using it. There is no differentiation in Islam.

Yes there is oil there. However, I doubt if it will do anybody any good for many years. I can not see any of the 5 major oil companies investing any amount of money in the region for drilling and the people do not seem to have the money to drill for it.

I think oil is going to be a big problem in the entire region very fast. Many countries ended up building their economy on it, and OPEC has essentialy priced it self out of the market. For much of the world now it is far cheaper to develop their own resources rather than pay the $72 a barrel that the OPEC nations are now demanding.

I suspect that as soon as Venezuela nationalizes all off it's oil production we will see them pull out of OPEC and undersell them.

Two countries that are hurting real bad right now because of lost oil sales are Iran and Nigeria.

Iran has plenty of oil, but nobody will buy it. Currently they are reducing production at the rate of 600,000 barrels per day. In a few years production will be ended unless they can lower their cost and selling price.

Iran actually is short of oil - Iran has ensnared itself in a petroleum crisis that could drive its oil exports to zero by 2015. While Iran has the third- largest oil reserves in the world, its exports may be shrinking by 10 to 12 percent per year. How can this be happening? -IHT 1/8/07

Nigeria also has a lot of oil. However, production is at a near stand still because the majory oil companies are pulling their workers out of the country.

NIGERIAN local content initiative was evolved in 2002 by the Federal Government to domesticate major operations in the oil and gas sector. The whole idea is to strengthen the nation's competence in these technical areas so that it can transform into a real major player in the oil and gas business the world over.

Venezuela may soon become the prime choice for the oil companies to buy Petroleum from. Venezuela already owns one of the worlds largest companies CITGO and is planning to gain major countrol of the other 4, which should make Venezuela the worlds primary source of oil.

Venezuela's oil industry was very similar to Alberta's in the early- to mid-1990s, when US-promoted neo-liberalism—“free trade” and the privatization and deregulation of the oil industry—was implemented. But when the controversial yet popular Hugo Chávez was elected in 1998, Venezuela embarked on a transformative experiment, “re-nationalizing” the state oil company. With the country’s oil-based income increasing exponentially, Venezuela has invested heavily in social programs. According to the Venezuelan National Statistics Institute, poverty rates have declined from 49 to 37 per cent since Chávez assumed office. The Chávez administration has presented a serious challenge to neo-liberalism in Latin America by developing a social-democratic model with a sharp revolutionary edge. This process was made possible by Chávez's successful mobilization of poor Venezuelans into a mass movement.

CITGO is the only oil corporation answering the call made by U.S. senators to use part of their record profits to help U.S. lower classes.

New York, November 17, 2006--CITGO Petroleum Corporation, in partnership with Citizens Energy Corporation, made its first delivery of discount heating oil of the 2006-2007 winter season here today. The CITGOVenezuela heating oil program is committed to delivering more than 25 million gallons of fuel, at a 40 percent discount, to more than 100,000 needy households in New York City. This is the second year for the initiative.
CITGO, owned by Petróleos de Venezuela, the Venezuelan national oil company, has designated Citizens Energy Corporation, a Boston-based non-profit, to run the household delivery program.

Citizens Energy, formed by former Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II during the oil price shocks of the late 1970s, has provided discounted heating oil to the poor and elderly for more than 25 years.

“We approached every major oil company and every OPEC nation last year to ask that a small slice of their record profits go to help the poor,” said Kennedy. “Only one oil company – CITGO – and only one nation – Venezuela – stepped up to the plate to offer a helping hand.”

Petroleum in Africa and the mid-east is no longer a necessity and it has quite possibly over priced itself on the world market.

So getting back to topic. Undeveloped petroleum in Sudan is not an issue and iit is more of a liability than a luxury for Sudan and Darfur. Petroleum is worthless unless it can be sold. The Worlds buyers and producers are looking elsewhere.
