O People! If you are in doubt as to the truth of resurrection,
remember that, verily, We have created every one of you out of dust, then out of a drop of sperm, then out of a germ-cell,
then out of an embryonic lump complete in itself and yet incomplete, so that We might make your origin clear unto you. And whatever We will to be born We cause to rest in the mothers' wombs for a term set by Us, and then We bring you forth as infants and allow you to live so that some of you might attain to maturity; for among you are such as are caused to die in childhood, just as many a one of you is reduced in old age to a most abject state, ceasing to know anything of what he once knew so well. And if, O people, thou art still in doubt as to resurrection, consider this: thou canst see the earth dry and lifeless -- and suddenly, when We send down waters upon it, it stirs and swells and puts forth every kind of lovely plant! And who is it that brings forth the living out of that which is dead, and brings forth the dead out of that which is alive? And who is it that governs all that exists?" And they will surely answer, "It is Allah." Say, then: "Will you not, then, become fully conscious of Him -- seeing that He is Allah, your Sustainer, the Ultimate Truth? For, after the truth has been forsaken, what is there left but error? How, then can you lose sight of the truth?"

Al-Maani'
The Preventer of Harm
He alone knows that which is beyond the reach
of a created being's perception, and to none does He disclose aught of the mysteries of His Own unfathomable knowledge,
unless it be to an apostle whom He has been pleased to elect therefore: and then He sends forth the forces of heaven to watch over him in whatever lies open before him and in what is beyond his ken -- so as to make manifest that it is indeed but their Sustainer's messages that these apostles deliver:
for it is He who encompasses with His knowledge all that they have to say, just as He takes count, one by one, of everything that exists.
Al-Jinn 72:26-28, tr. Asad
91
Ad-Daarr
The Creator of the Harmful
If We let man taste some of Our grace and then take it away from him -- behold, he abandons all hope, forgetting all gratitude for Our past favors. And thus it is: if We let him taste ease and plenty after hardship has visited him, he is sure to say, "Gone is all affliction from me!" -- for, behold, he is given to vain exultation, and glories only in himself. And thus it is with most men -- save those who are patient in adversity and do righteous deeds: it is they whom forgiveness of sins awaits, and a great reward.
Hud 11:9-11, tr. Asad
92

The Light
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth.
The parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche

the glass as it were a brilliant star, lit from a blessed Tree,
an Olive, neither of the East nor of the West,
whose Oil is nearly luminous, though fire has hardly touched it. Light upon Light! Allah guides whoever He wills to His Light, Allah sets forth Parables for people, and Allah knows all things.

Question: I heard somewhere that the Prophet (peace be upon him) has 99 names? Is this true? What are those names?

Answered by Sheikh `Alî A. al-Jumu`ah, professor at al-Imâm University, Qasîm Branch

The names of our Prophet (peace be upon him) cited in the hadîth related by Jubayr b. Mut`im are five. He relates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “I have five names: I am Muhammad, I am Ahmad, I am al-Mâhî for Allah eliminates disbelief by me, I am al-Hâshir since all people gather under me at the day of Judgment, and I am al-`آqib”. [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (3532), Sahîh Muslim (2354), Sunan al-Tirmidhî (2842) and Musnad Ahmad (80/81/84)].

These are the authentic names of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he cited himself. There are other names stated in the Qur’an. Ibn Hajar writes: “The other names of the Prophet (peace be upon him) which are mentioned in the Qur’an are: al-Shâhid, al-Mubashshir, al-Nadhîr, al-Mubayyin, al-Dâ`î ilâ Allah, al-Sirâj al-Munîr, al-Dhikr, al-Rahmah, al-Ni`mah, al-Hâdî, al-Shahîd, al-Amîn, al-Muzammil, and al-Mudaththir. More names came in the hadîth related by `Abd Allah b. `Amr b. al-`آs which is al-Mutawakkil.

Other famous names are: al-Mukhtâr, al-Mustafâ, al-Shâfi`, al-Mushaffa`, al-Sâdiq, al-Musaddiq and others.

Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned other names in his book Zad al-Ma`âd such as al-Qâsim, al-Dahûk, al-Qattâl, `Abd Allah, Sayyid Walad آdam, Sâhib Liwâ’ al-Hamd, Sâhib al-Maqâm al-Mahmûd. However, these are all descriptions and not really names.

What the questioner said regarding 99 names is not substantiated by any authentic hadîth related from the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Ibn Dahiyyah writes in his book devoted to the prophetic names: “Some people said that the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) names are equivalent to Allah’s names (i.e., 99 names)... "If someone were to search for them, he would find them to be more like three hundred names.”

He then goes on to enumerate these names in his book, referring them back to his sources in the Qur’ân and in different biographical works. He also mentioned the proper way of pronouncing these names and their meanings.

This is as far as I can go in this matter, and may peace and blessing be upon our Prophet Muhammad.

Hey snakelegs.

I think the odd number has to do with the fact that there are no equals to Allaah, He is One and He has created the creation in pairs, i.e. humans, animals, plants etc. however God is One and there is none like Him. [so there is no even to Him.]

Maybe thats why the odd number is emphasised so much. Allaah knows best.

They are the attributes of Allaah, i.e. Al-Rahmaan (the Most Compassionate), Al-Raheem (The Most Merciful), Al-Wudood (The Loving.) etc. :)

Peace.

When we say Allaah is the All-Aware, we don't ask how He see's and hear's all things. etc.

These are the attributes of Allaah, but we don't compare them to the creation. :)

Peace.

You are the Supreme Lord God, Limitless and Infinite. What Virtues of Yours can I speak of and describe?
...................

Even knowing God, I cannot describe Him; He cannot be described in words............

How can we describe Him with words? There is no end to the descriptions of Him.

You just described him with three words.

We describe God only with the words that He used to describe Himself. Of course, we can never properly appreciate His attributes completely... He is beyond your comprehension.

^ yep, The only common thing between his attributes and ours are the name, the nature and implimentation of that attribute is known only to him.

e.g. cats have feet, so do humans, but human feet are not like cat ones. Similarly, Allah has hands and so do we, but Allah's hands are completely different to ours.

yep, Allah tells us that he does have hands, that in no way implies his hands are in any way, shape or form similar like our ones, hence why Allah also says "nothing is like him, and he is the all hearing, all seeing" (so even his hearing, seeing attributes are such that their nature is only known to him SWT)

tc all the best :)

:sl:

At-Tirmidhee writes in his Sunan (1/128-129):
"It has been said by more than one person from the People of Knowledge about such ahaadeeth that there is no resemblance to the Attributes of Allaah. And the Lord - the Blessed, the Most High - descends to the lowest heaven every night. So they say: Affirm these narrations, have faith in them and do not deny them, and do not ask how. The likes of this has been related from Maalik ibn Anas, Sufyaan ath-Thawree, ibn 'Uyaynah and 'Abdullah ibn al-Mubaarak, who all said about these ahaadeeth: 'Leave them as they are without asking how.' Such is the saying of the People of Knowledge from Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah. However, the Jahmiyyah oppose these narrations and say: This is making resemblance (tashbeeh)! However, Allaah - the Most High - has mentioned in various places in His Book the Attribute of Hand, Hearing and Seeing. So the Jahmiyyah make false interpolation (ta'weel) of these verses and explain them in a way other than that explained by the People of Knowledge. They say: Indeed, Allaah did not create Aadam with His own Hand. And they say that the meaning of Hand is: Power.

Ishaaq ibn Raahawaiah (one of the famous teachers of al-Bukhaaree) said: 'Resemblance is if it is said: Hand like my hand, or similar to my hand. Or Hearing like my hearing, or similar to my hearing. So when it is said: Hearing like my hearing, or similar to my hearing, then this is making resemblance. But if what is being said is what Allaah has said: Hand, Hearing, Seeing, and it is not asked how, nor is it said: like my hearing, or similar to my hearing, then this is not making resemblance. Allaah - the Most Blessed, Most High - said in His Book: There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing.”
