In a bulletin posted at 11:55am Mecca time Wednesday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance forces a short while before had bombarded the area of the Republican Palace in Baghdad, known to the invaders as the “green zone” – where the headquarters of the occupation and its puppet “government” are located.
Mafkarat al-Islam reported that four rockets of an unknown variety slammed into the US compound. The Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent near the “green zone” reported that plumes of black smoke could be seen rising over the area after the attack, as helicopters flew in overhead. The American aircraft were still flying over the area at the time the correspondent filed his report.
Meanwhile, Iraqi Resistance fighters a mounted a violent barrage on Saddam International Airport, a major US occupation base in Iraq. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in the area of the airport reported that 18 Grad rockets blasted into the central, southern, and northern parts of the airport, setting fires whose flames reached high into the sky. The sound of massive explosions could be heard coming from within the airport as US helicopters and fighter planes flocked in around the base where they could still be seen at the time of reporting. Unconfirmed reports stated that a number of buildings on the base had been damaged.
The bombardment came on the day when US Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld paid a surprise visit to occupied Iraq. Rumsfeld arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday for a previously unannounced visit. In the occupied Iraqi capital, the Pentagon chief held talks with officials of the US military authorities and their Iraqi puppets. Immediately upon arrival Rumsfeld ordered the Iraqi officials to complete writing up their “constitution” by the deadline of 15 August. Rumsfeld told the stooges: “we don’t want any delay. . . . “The time has come to move forward,” Reuters reported.
Mafkarat al-Islam noted that the reason for the sudden Rumsfeld visit was not disclosed, but that it comes amidst an evident deterioration of the US situation in the country. Other observers point out that there have been increasing indications that the US, faced with relentless Resistance attacks, is seeking face-saving ways to cover a withdrawal from Iraq that it increasingly recognizes is inevitable.
