Those are real pictures. It also froze another time sometime in the 1940's. I forgot exactly what year but I still remember that year. As a boy in Connecticut, I was not that far from Niagra Falls and I still have some very vivid memories of it. I managed to get my hands and feet frost bitten and that made a strong impression on my memory. all of the newspapers carried pictures of a frozen Niagra Falls and the Saturday News Reel at the Movie Theater also showed films.

The strange thing about the freezing the 40's the Water fall was still liquid inside the ice. It was like the water had frozen into huge pipes and liquid water was running inside them.

What a second? I thought that was in africa, Niagra Falls? Like Tanzania or something. Which was what made me think it was fake.

Niagara Falls is in upstate New York. On the Niagara River. Happens to be the City of Niagara is built along side it.

It is actually 2 sets of falls Horseshoe Falls and Niagara Falls One side of Niagara is in the US the other side is in Canada

In order to explain possible confusion for people who may have tried Google seaches and come across the satements that niagara falls never froze. the Falls is in 2 parts Horseshoe Falls and American Falls, it is the combination of the name that makes niagara Falls plural. Horsedhoe falls has never been known to freeze over. American Falls has frozen at least 6 times since records been kept. 1949 would be the year I remembered. the pictures in this thread would have had been taken in 1909 and not 1911 as they were mistakenly labelled by somebody in the past.

Unlike the Horseshoe Falls (which has never frozen over), the American Falls are susceptible to freezing because of the small amount of water flow. Normally the American Falls has a peak mean flow of 10,000 cubic feet of water per second. The winter mean water flow is reduced to less than 8,000 cubic feet of water per second. This minimal flow is barely sufficient to cover the rock face of the Falls. During harsh winters, ice frequently built up at eastern end of Goat Island causing an ice dam to reduce the water flow to the northern channel which feeds water to the American Falls. As a result water flow is restricted sufficiently that any remaining waters quickly freeze over.

The installation of the ice boom at the mouth of Lake Erie, the building of the International water control dam (which regulates water flow) and milder winters have all but eliminated the possibility of the American Falls ever completely freezing over in modern times.

The American Falls water flow was reduced to such an extent in 1909, 1936, 1938 and 1949 that it froze over.

I too can verify that the falls did indeed freeze twice in documented history (that I'm aware of). I live about a 20 minute drive from Niagara falls :) Its lovely.

And of course, the Canadian falls are vastly superior to the US ones :p
