View Full Version : Understanding Islam

Hello

I am a Christian and I know a bit about Islam. Sometimes I read the Koran and I have always found a lot of peace in doing so. I am half Middle Eastern myself and have lived in the Middle East as a child. I don't really understand Islam although my friend from Australia has just converted. Can anyone tell me, in a nutshell what Islam is about? What is the core essential message of Islam? For example in Christianity it would be the first two of the Ten Commandments, both related to love, love of God and love of others. Can you tell me whether Islam has a similar ethos, as a starting point?

Thankyou
Miriam

Hey Miriam.

If we look at many religions in the world, all of them claim to worship God but the majority associate partners with Him in that worship. For example christians say they worship God, yet they claim that God is in 3 parts and they worship Jesus son of Mary. Other religions claim they worship God but they worship other stone idols which are carved out from their own hands.

Islaam (which means submission) is the same message of all the Prophets of God, they all called their people to worship God Alone, and not to worship idols, or humans, or man-made philosophies etc. Prophet Noah, Prophet Abraham, Moses, Jesus son of Mary, Muhammad (peace be upon them all) - all the Prophets called the people to worship God Alone. There's been over 124,000 Prophets who have come to mankind, for this basic call.

And We sent not a Messenger except with the language of his people, in order that he might make (the Message) clear for them. Then Allâh misleads whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. [Qur'an 14:4]

All the Prophets came to call their people to good morals, they called them to worship God Alone, to establish the prayer to God, to pay in charity, to help the needy, to enjoin the family ties, to enjoin the good and forbid the evil. Since all these acts make society better and it unites mankind, especially on matters where they differed. And Allaah guides those who are sincere.

Some people who the Prophets were sent to rejected the Prophets call, even though the Prophet simply called them towards good and Allaah's reward, and some accepted the call of the Messenger sent by God.

In the end, both groups of people would die. The believers aswell as the disbelievers. We know that without a doubt the One who created us when we were nothing can easily bring us back to life again, and this will without a doubt occur since He will question us on what we did in this temporary life. That day every soul will be judged about anything and everything it did in this world. Since this life was a temporary test.

Those who obeyed the Messengers would be rewarded by God in the real, everlasting life of Paradise which Allaah has promised for His obedient servants. Whereas those who rejected the clear message of Allaah and His Messengers' did so out of arrogance, and due to that - they will be punished in a blazing hellfire for being rebellious and opposing God, they rejected Him and His message, they took it in jest and felt that they would never return to Him. And if given a life of eternity - they would remain in a state of ungratefulness to God, so God will punish them due to that.

Allaah is never unjust to any of His servants, and those who obey Him will have a great reward in this life and the one to come.

That is the true purpose of why God created us. His final Messenger is Muhammad (peace be upon him) and he brought this exact same message.
And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: "If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allâh), I will give you more (of My Blessings), but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers), verily! My Punishment is indeed severe." [Qur'an 14:7]
And Allaah Almighty knows best.

Allaah Almighty also says:

“O My slaves, all of you are astray except those whom I guide, so ask Me for guidance, and I will guide you. O My slaves, all of you are hungry except those whom I feed, so ask me for food and I will feed you. O My slaves, all of you are naked except those whom I clothe, so ask Me for clothing and I will clothe you. … O My slaves, if the first of you and the last of you, your humans and your jinn, were to stand on a single plain and ask of Me and I were to give each one what he asked for, that would not cause any loss to Me greater than what is lost when a needle is dipped into the sea.”

Narrated by Muslim (2577).

I hope the message is quite clear, and if you have any questions - then please do ask!

Peace.

Hi Fi Sabillah,

Thanks for your answer. From that I have gleaned that Christians go to hell? How can that be when Christians worship God also? Isn't that what God desires? And where is God's love for his children when we are condemned to hell? I am sorry if this sounds angry but I feel confused as to how Christians, who follow the teaching of Jesus, as you call prophet, could be condemened. thanks for explaining.

Hey.

Just to clarify, Prophets Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad (peace be upon them all), or any other Prophet of God [all 124,000 of them] never came to call their people to 'Christ(ianity) or Judaism (tribes of Juda) - they called their people to Islaam [submission to God.] The Prophets were muslims (one who submits to God) and they never worshipped any other deity except God Alone. So if people prayed to a rock or a human for divine help, the righteous people and Prophets would tell them off - rather they should pray to God Alone without any intermediarries.

Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam. Those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) did not differ except, out of mutual jealousy, after knowledge had come to them. And whoever disbelieves in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, then surely, Allah is Swift in calling to account. [Qur'an 3: 19]

As a starting point, we know that Jesus son of Mary was a servant and Messenger of God like all the Prophets of God were. He was purely monotheistic like Prophet Abraham, you'll even see that in the bible there is no mention of Jesus son of Mary telling the people to worship him.

If he was truelly god, would he live his daily life like a human? Would he eat, drink, go to the bathroom? Are these really attributes of God? Or how about the claim of some christians who say that god actually died, is it really possible that god can be killed by his own creation? Isn't that blasphemy?

The people who worship God don't associate partners with Him in worship, so they don't call out to Mary (peace be upon her), or Jesus son of Mary (peace be upon him), or any other saint. They call out to our Creator and Sustainer Alone for divine help, since prayer is an act of worship. Therefore it can't be directed to anyone besides God right? It is actually the way of the polytheists to call out to others besides God Alone, and this is what the Prophets of God actually called for - none is worthy of worship except God Alone.

Jesus son of Mary is honored in the sight of God, yet he is not god himself. The christian denominations themselves differ, and they can't even agree on a common book together. So who is to truelly say that a specific book which a catholic uses is authentic, compared to a version of the protestants?

Those who disbelieve from among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and among Al-Mushrikûn (the polytheists) were not going to leave (their disbelief) until there came to them clear evidence.

A Messenger (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) from Allâh, reciting (the Qur'ân) purified pages [purified from Al-Bâtil (falsehood, etc.)].

Containing correct and straight laws from Allâh.

And the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) differed not until after there came to them clear evidence. (i.e. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and whatever was revealed to him).

And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allâh, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him), and perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât - the 5 daily Prayers) and give Zakât (the charity): and that is the right religion.

Verily, those who disbelieve (in the religion of Islâm, the Qur'ân and Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) from among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and Al-Mushrikûn will abide in the Fire of Hell. They are the worst of creatures.

Verily, those who believe [in the Oneness of Allâh, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) including all obligations ordered by Islâm] and do righteous good deeds, they are the best of creatures.

Their reward with their Lord is 'Adn (Eden) Paradise (Gardens of Eternity), underneath which rivers flow, they will abide therein forever, Allâh Well-Pleased with them, and they with Him. That is for him who fears his Lord.

[Qur'an - Al Bayyinah [the Clear Proof/Evidence] 98]

Peace.

A Quick Introduction to Islam
By Abu Yusuf Daniel Masters, Abu Maryam Isma'il Kaka and Abu Iman Robert Squires. © Muslim Answers

Islam and Muslims
The word "Islam" is an Arabic word which means "submission to the will of God". This word comes from the same root as the Arabic word "salam", which means "peace". As such, the religion of Islam teaches that in order to achieve true peace of mind and surety of heart, one must submit to God and live according to His Divinely revealed Law. The most important truth that God revealed to mankind is that there is nothing divine or worthy of being worshipped except for Almighty God, thus all human beings should submit to Him. The word "Muslim" means one who submits to the will of God, regardless of their race, nationality or ethnic background. Being a Muslim entails willful submission and active obedience to God, and living in accordance with His message. Some people mistakenly believe that Islam is just a religion for Arabs, but nothing could be further from the truth. Not only are there converts to Islam in every corner of the world, especially in England and America, but by taking a look at the Muslim World from Bosnia to Nigeria, and from Indonesia to Morocco, one can clearly see that Muslims come from many various races, ethnic groups and nationalities. It is also interesting to note that in actuality, more than 80% of all Muslims are not Arabs - there are more Muslims in Indonesia than in the whole Arab World! So though even though it is true that most Arabs are Muslims, the large majority of Muslims are not Arabs. However, anyone who submits completely to God and worships Him alone is a Muslim.

Continuity of the Message
Islam is not a new religion because "submission to the will of God", i.e. Islam, has always been the only acceptable religion in the sight of God. For this reason, Islam is the true "natural religion", and it is the same eternal message revealed through the ages to all of God's prophets and messengers. Muslims believe that all of God's prophets, which include Abraham, Noah, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad, brought the same message of Pure Monotheism. For this reason, the Prophet Muhammad was not the founder of a new religion, as many people mistakenly think, but he was the Final Prophet of Islam. By revealing His final message to Muhammad, which is an eternal and universal message for all of mankind, God finally fulfilled the covenant that He made with Abraham, who was one of the earliest and greatest prophets. Suffice it to say that the way of Islam is the same as the way of the prophet Abraham, because both the Bible and the Qur'an portray Abraham as a towering example of someone who submitted himself completely to God and worshipped Him without intermediaries. Once this is realized, it should be clear that Islam has the most continuous and universal message of any religion, because all prophets and messengers were "Muslims", i.e. those who submitted to God's will, and they preached "Islam", i.e. submission to the will of Almighty God.

The Oneness of God
The foundation of the Islamic faith is belief in the Oneness of Almighty God - the God of Abraham, Noah, Moses and Jesus. Islam teaches that a pure belief in One God is intuitive in human beings and thus fulfills the natural inclination of the soul. As such, Islam's concept of God is straightforward, unambiguous and easy to understand. Islam teaches that the hearts, minds and souls of human beings are fitting receptacles for clear divine revelation, and that God's revelations to man are not clouded by self-contradictory mysteries or irrational ideas. As such, Islam teaches that even though God cannot be fully comprehended and grasped by our finite human minds, He also does not expect us to accept absurd or demonstrably false beliefs about Him. According to the teachings of Islam, Almighty God is absolutely One and His Oneness should never be compromised by associating partners with Him - neither in worship nor in belief. Due to this, Muslims are required to maintain a direct relationship with God, and therefore all intermediaries are absolutely forbidden. From the Islamic standpoint, believing in the Oneness of God means to realize that all prayer and worship should be exclusively for God, and that He alone deserves such titles as "Lord" and "Savior". Some religions, even though they believe on "One God", do not make all of their worship and prayers for Him alone.

Also, they also give the title of "Lord" to beings that are not All-Knowing, All-Powerful and Un-Changing - even according to their own scriptures. Suffice it to say that according to Islam, it is not enough that people believe that "God is One", but they must actualize this belief by proper conduct. In short, in the Islamic concept of God, which is completely based on Divine Revelation, there is no ambiguity in divinity - God is God and man is man. Since God is the only Creator and continual Sustainer of the Universe, He is transcendent above His creation - the Creator and the creature never mix. Islam teaches that God has a unique nature and that He is free from gender, human weaknesses and beyond anything which human beings can imagine. The Qur'an teaches that the signs and proofs of God's wisdom, power and existence are evident in the world around us. As such, God calls on man to ponder over the creation in order to build a better understanding of his Creator. Muslims believe that God is Loving, Compassionate and Merciful, and that He is concerned with the daily affairs of human beings. In this, Islam strikes a unique balance between false religious and philosophical extremes. Some religions and philosophies portray God as just an impersonal "Higher Power" who is uninterested, or unaware, of the life of each individual human. Other religions tend to give God human qualities and teach that He is present in His creation, by being incarnate in someone, something - or even everything.

In Islam, however, Almighty God has clarified the truth by letting mankind know that He is "Compassionate", "Merciful", "Loving" and the "Answerer of Prayers". But He as also emphasized strongly that "there is nothing like unto Him", and that He is high above time, space and His creation. Finally, it should be mentioned that the God that Muslims worship is the same God that Jews and Christians worship - because there is only one God. It is unfortunate that some people mistakenly believe that Muslims worship a different God than Jews and Christians, and that "Allah" is just the "god of the Arabs". This myth, which has been propagated by the enemies of Islam, is completely false since the word "Allah" is simply the Arabic name for Almighty God. It is the same word for God which is used by Arabic-speaking Jews and Christians. However, it should be clarified that even though Muslims worship the same God as Jews and Christian, their concept of Him differs somewhat from the beliefs of other religions - mainly because it is based completely on Divine Revelation from God. For example, Muslims reject the Christian belief that God is a Trinity, not only becaue the Qur'an rejects it, but also because if this was God's true nature, He would have clearly revealed it to Abraham, Noah, Jesus and all of the other prophets.

The Qur'an
The Arabic world "Al-Qur'an" literally means "the recitation". When used in regards to Islam, the word Qur'an means God's final message to mankind that was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. The Qu'ran, sometimes spelled Koran, is the literal the word of God - as it clearly says time and time again. Unlike other sacred scriptures, the Qur'an has been perfectly preserved in both its words and meaning in a living language. The Qu'ran is a living miracle in the Arabic language; and is know to be inimitable in its style, form and spiritual impact. God's final revelation to mankind, the Qur'an, was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over a period of 23 years. The Qur'an, in contrast to many other religious books, was always thought to be the Word of God by those who believed in it, i.e. it wasn't something decreed by a religious council many years after being written. Also, the Qu'ran was recited publicly in front of both the Muslim and non-Muslim communities during the life of the Prophet Muhammad. The entire Qur'an was also completely written down in lifetime of the Prophet, and numerous companions of the Prophet memorized the entire Qur'an word-for-word as it was revealed. So unlike other scriptures, the Qur'an was always in the hands of the common believers, it was always thought to be God's word and, due to wide-spread memorization, it was perfectly preserved.

In regards to the teachings of the Qur'an - it is a universal scripture, and it is addressed to all of mankind, and not to a particular tribe or "chosen people". The message that it brings is nothing new, but the same message of all of the prophets - submit to Almighty God and worship Him alone. As such, God's revelation in the Qur'an focuses on teaching human beings the importance of believing in the Unity of God and framing their lives around the guidance which He has sent. Additionally, the Qur'an contains the stories of the previous prophets, such as Abraham, Noah, Moses and Jesus; as well as many commands and prohibitions from God. In modern times in which so many people are caught up in doubt, spiritual despair and "political correctness", the Qur'anic teachings offer solutions to the emptiness of our lives and the turmoil that is gripping the world today. In short, the Qur'an is the book of guidance par excellence.

The Prophet Muhammad(S)
Unlike the founders of many religious, the final prophet of Islam is a real documented and historical figure. He lived in the full light of history, and the most minute details of his life are known. Not only do Muslims have the complete text of God's words that were revealed to Muhammad, but they have also preserved his saying and teachings in what is called "hadith" literature. This having been said, it should be understood that Muslims believe that the Prophet Muhammad was only a man chosen by God, and that he is not divine in any way. In order to avoid the misguided wish to deify him, the Prophet Muhammad taught Muslims to refer to him as "God's Messenger and His Slave". The mission of the last and final prophet of God was to simply teach that "there is nothing divine or worthy of being worshipped except for Almighty God", as well as being a living example of God's revelation. In simple terms, God sent the revelation to Muhammad, who in turn taught it , preached it, lived it and put it into practice. In this way, Muhammad was more that just a "prophet" in the sense of many of the Biblical prophets, since he was also a statesman and ruler. He was a man who lived a humble life in the service of God, and established an all-encompassing religion and way of life by showing what it means to be an ideal friend, husband, teacher, ruler, warrior and judge.

For this reason, Muslims follow him not for his own sake, but in obedience to God, because Muhammad not only showed us how to deal with our fellow human beings, but more importantly, he showed us how to relate to and worship God, worship Him in the only way pleasing to Him. Like other prophets, Muhammad faced a great deal of opposition and persecution during his mission. However, he was always patient and just, and he treated his enemies well. The results of his mission were very successful, and even though his mission started in one of the most backward and remotes places on earth, within a hundred years of the death of Muhammad, Islam had spread from Spain to China. The Prophet Muhammad was the greatest of all of God's prophets, not because he had new doctrines or greater miracles, but because the results of his mission have broght more human beings into the pure and proper belief in the One True God than any other prophet.

The Islamic Way of Life

In the Holy Qur'an, God teaches human beings that they were created in order to worship Him, and that the basis of all true worship is God-consciousness. Since the teachings of Islamic encompass all aspects of life and ethics, God-consciousness is encouraged in all human affairs. Islam makes it clear that all human acts are acts of worship if they are done for God alone and in accordance to His Divine Law. As such, worship in Islam is not limited to religious rituals. The teachings of Islam act as a mercy and a healing for the human soul, and such qualities as humility, sincerity, patience and charity are strongly encouraged. Additionally, Islam condemns pride and self-righteousness, since Almighty God is the only judge of human righteousness. The Islamic view of the nature of man is also realistic and well-balanced. Human beings are not believed to be inherently sinful, but are seen as equally capable of both good and evil. Islam also teaches that faith and action go hand-in-hand. God has given people free-will, and the measure of one's faith is one's deeds and actions. However, human beings have also been created weak and regularly fall into sin. This is the nature of the human being as created by God in His Wisdom, and it is not inherently "corrupt" or in need of repair. This is because the avenue of repentance of always open to all human beings, and Almighty God loves the repentant sinner more than one who does not sin at all.

The true balance of an Islamic life is established by having a healthy fear of God as well as a sincere belief in His infinite Mercy. A life without fear of God leads to sin and disobedience, while believing that we have sinned so much that God will not possibly forgive us only leads to despair. In light of this, Islam teaches that: only the misguided despair of the Mercy of their Lord. Additionally, the Holy Qur'an, which was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, contains a great deal of teachings about the life hereafter and the Day of Judgment. Due to this, Muslims believe that all human beings will ultimately be judged by God for their beliefs and actions in their earthly lives. In judging human beings, Almighty God will be both Merciful and Just, and people will only be judged for what they were capable of. Suffice it to say that Islam teaches that life is a test, and that all human beings will be accountable before God. A sincere belief in the life hereafter is key to leading a well-balanced life and moral. Otherwise, life is viewed as an end in itself, which causes human beings to become more selfish, materialistic and immoral.

Islam for a Better Life
Islam teaches that true happiness can only being obtained by living a life full of God-consciousness and being satisfied with what God has given us. Additionally, true "freedom" is freedom from being controlled by our base human desires and being ruled by man-made ideologies. This stands in stark contrast to the view of many people in the modern world, who consider "freedom" to be the ability to satisfy all of their desires without inhibition. The clear and comprehensive guidance of Islam gives human-beings a well-defined purpose and direction in life. In addition to being members of the human-brotherhood of Islam, its well-balanced and practical teachings are a source of spiritual comfort, guidance and morality. A direct and clear relationship with Almighty God, as well as the sense of purpose and belonging that ones feels as a Muslim, frees a person from the many worries of everyday life. In short, the Islamic way of life is pure and wholesome. It builds self-discipline and self-control thought regular prayer and fasting, and frees human-beings from superstition and all sorts of racial, ethnic and national prejudices. By accepting to live a God-conscious life, and realizing that the only thing that distinguishes people in the sight of God is their consciousness of Him, a person's true human dignity is realized.

Welcome Mariam... I hope you continue to learn more about Islam and May God guide Us. :)

The basics of Belief include

1) Belief in God

Say, “He is God, the One. God, to Whom the creatures turn for their needs. He begets not, nor was He begotten, and there is none like Him.” (Surah 112)

2) Belief in Angels

Muslims believe in the existence of the angels and that they are honored creatures. The angels worship God alone, obey Him, and act only by His command. Among the angels is Gabriel, who brought down the Quran to Muhammad

3) Belief in God’s Revealed Books

Muslims believe that God revealed books to His messengers as proof for mankind and as guidance for them. Among these books is the Quran, which God revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (saw) . God has guaranteed the Quran’s protection from any corruption or distortion. God has said:

Indeed, We have sent down the Reminder (Quran), and surely We will guard it (from corruption).

4) Belief in the Prophets and Messengers of God:

Muslims believe in the prophets and messengers of God, starting with Adam, including Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and Jesus (peace be upon them). But God’s final message to man, a reconfirmation of the eternal message, was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Muslims believe that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the last prophet sent by God, as God has said:

Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but he is the Messenger of God and the last of the prophets... (Quran, 33:40)

Muslims believe that all the prophets and messengers were created human beings who had none of the divine qualities of God.

5) Belief in the Day of Judgment:

Muslims believe in the Day of Judgment (the Day of Resurrection) when all people will be resurrected for God’s judgment according to their beliefs and deeds.

6) Belief in Al-Qadar:

Muslims believe in Al-Qadar, which is Divine Predestination, but this belief in Divine Predestination does not mean that human beings do not have freewill. Rather, Muslims believe that God has given human beings freewill. This means that they can choose right or wrong and that they are responsible for their choices.

The belief in Divine Predestination includes belief in four things: 1) God knows everything. He knows what has happened and what will happen. 2) God has recorded all that has happened and all that will happen. 3) Whatever God wills to happen happens, and whatever He wills not to happen does not happen. 4) God is the Creator of everything.

Dear Fi Sabillah,

I guess what you are saying then is that Christians do go to hell? But I still fail to see why this is when Christians worship God - the one God whom you Muslims call Allah! I fail to understand how Christians go to hell when they show utter reverence to the same God as you worship.

Perhaps an analogy would explain it better.

Two people are making plans to go to New York. Now there is New York, NY which is on the Eastern Coast and is a very large city in New York State. But, there is also New York, Texas a small town about 100 miles SE of Dallas, Texas.

the two people are both using very good maps and have the same desires, but one is going to end up in New York Texas and the other is going to end up in New York, NY Is it a punishment? or is it the result of following the wrong directions?

I'm sorry if i'm causing any offense to you, however i will clarify my position.

We know that there is no God except our Creator and Sustainer Alone. He is One, He has no partner and He is neither born, nor does He have children, there is none like Him, and there is none worthy of worship besides Him because it is He who has given us all the good we have. As i've stated in my earlier posts, you'll see that there is not even one mention of Jesus son of Mary (peace be upon them) calling people to worship him, all he did was call the people to worship the One above the heavens.

Worship can be anything which helps one draw closer to God, it can be inwardly or outwardly. It can be a prostration, a prayer, the concept of love, hope, fear. The divine love which is for God only, the hope for His reward and the fear for his punishment if we were to go against His commandments.

Associating partners - which is the worst sin in the sight of God - with God in worship can involve praying to any other deity besides God, whether its to pray to that deity to 'intercede' on your behalf to God, or whether its to prostrate to it, with the intent of drawing closer to God. Rather - all worship should be directed to God Alone, and there should be no intermediarries attatched, since this is the way of the polytheists, and this is what all the Prophets called their people against. And Allaah is the All-Hearing, All Aware.

If you go to any polytheist, you may ask them why they pray to a dead persons grave. Or a saint as they may say, they will answer that this person will intercede on their behalf to God. Or they will even say that God has incarnated within this person. Yet these beliefs are evil because they involve people worshipping the creation instead of the Creator, and people become slaves to the creation instead of the One who gives them all that they have.

All the Messengers' of God called their people against this idea, and that they should direct all their acts of worship to God Alone, and if they did so - they would be rewarded a great reward in this life and the one to come of Paradise where they can have all that they desire and more, whereas those who disobeyed the Messengers and rejected God's Message would be punished, a small torment in this life, and a greater in the hereafter for being arrogant and rebellious to God and His Messengers'. In the end, both parties would die - the believers aswell as the disbelievers.

Yet this isn't the end, since God, our Creator - the One who created us when we were nothing will bring us back to life. He will question us on whether we obeyed the Messenger sent to us. We know that the bible isn't preserved for us today at all, and if you were to go to a christian catholic church or a protestant church, they have different versions. Why? Because they don't have an original as a Criterion. So God sent His final Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) to confirm what came before, and to clear up the misconceptions people had regarding the previous scriptures.

In blasphemy indeed are those that say that Allah is Christ the son of Mary. Say: "Who then hath the least power against Allah, if His will were to destroy Christ the son of Mary, his mother, and all every - one that is on the earth? For to Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between. He createth what He pleaseth. For Allah hath power over all things." [Qur'an 5: 17]

They do blaspheme who say: "Allah is Christ the son of Mary." But said Christ: "O Children of Israel! worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Whoever joins other gods with Allah,- Allah will forbid him the garden, and the Fire will be his abode. There will for the wrong-doers be no one to help.

They do blaspheme who say: Allah is one of three in a Trinity: for there is no god except One Allah. If they desist not from their word (of blasphemy), verily a grievous penalty will befall the blasphemers among them.

Why turn they not to Allah, and seek His forgiveness? For Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

Christ the son of Mary was no more than a messenger; many were the messengers that passed away before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They had both to eat their (daily) food. See how Allah doth make His signs clear to them; yet see in what ways they are deluded away from the truth!

Say: "Will ye worship, besides Allah, something which hath no power either to harm or benefit you? But Allah,- He it is that heareth and knoweth all things."

Say: "O people of the Book! exceed not in your religion the bounds (of what is proper), trespassing beyond the truth, nor follow the vain desires of people who went wrong in times gone by,- who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the even way.

[Qur'an 5: 72-77]

And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah ?'" He will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen.

I said not to them except what You commanded me - to worship Allah , my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness.

Allah will say, "This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness." For them are gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them, and they with Him. That is the great attainment.

To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that is therein, and He is Able to do all things.

[Qur'an 5: 116-120]

If you feel that God is being unfair to His servants by punishing those that associate partners with Him, then the justice for this will also be balanced out. Allaah will ask those who associated partners with Him to ask the one's they worshipped for reward. So if someone worshipped a stone idol, they will ask that for recompense on the day of judgement (obviously the stone won't be able to do anything.) If someone worships a human, even if the human is pious, the person will have to get their reward from this human [but obviously everything is dependant on the Creator.] The one's who worshipped God Alone, sincerely without no associates - they will be rewarded by Allaah, the Exhalted with an eternal paradise where they can have all that they desire, and more.

If anyone feels that it is unjust, then they have to stop being unjust to their own Creator. If Allaah created man so he should worship Him, then why worship the stone idol, or why worship a human when you can turn towards your Creator, the Most Compassionate?

Dear Fi-Sabillah,

I do have one question. The extract you have provided from the Koran mentions the Trinity. So where does the Koran gain this knowledge of the Trinity from if not from a knowledge of the Bible? You also mention that Jesus has not asked for himself to be worshipped in the Bible, which means that you must accept the testimony of the Bible as true! It is true that Jesus has never stated outright 'I am God, worship Me'. However it is implicit throughout everything Jesus says and does that he is God Himself. There are hundreds of references from which you can infer that the Christ is Lord if you are open to seeing them. Jesus was humble - he did not consider his equality with God as a thing to be grasped at. And thanks for the clear explainations, I think your religion is beautiful. I do however believe that even if you take Jesus out of the equation, that 'the Father' is indeed Allah. The reasons why there are different versions of the Bible is because it has been translated into so many languages - from Hebrew to Greek to Latin and then to English. There are some minor discrepancies between the different editions but the main points are irrefutabley the same. God bless.

Thanks for your reply Miriam. :)

The Qur'an is the speech of Allaah, and it is His revelation to His Messenger. The final Messenger of Allaah, Muhammad (peace be upon him) was an illiterate man (which is something praiseworthy since it's a proof that he never copied anything from other scriptures.)

The reason why i explained the concept of Jesus son of Mary not telling people to worship him using the bible as a piece of common ground was due to the fact that you realise that this wasn't the call of Jesus, i.e. to call people to worship him. Rather he called everyone to worship the One above the heavens as explained earlier, and this was the message of ALL the prophets of God, and Jesus son of Mary was not an exception to this.

God says in His final revelation:
We sent not a messenger except (to teach) in the language of his (own) people, in order to make (things) clear to them. Now Allah leaves straying those whom He pleases and guides whom He pleases: and He is Exalted in power, full of Wisdom.

[Qur'an Abraham 14:4]

Allaah guides those who are sincere, and those who want His reward. We all hope to be of the successful in this life and the next, ameen. Yet those who are rebellious continuously strive for disbeleif over God's forgiveness, reward and Mercy, so God leaves them astray in their misguidance due to their arrogance and disbelief.

The verse i quoted is an explanation that ALL the Prophets of God came to their people to call to the worship of God, our Creator, Sustainer Alone and they made this clear and apparent. The people of before believed in God, yet they prayed to others along with God since they felt that these dead people or stone idols would intercede for them. Yet why not pray to the One and Only God who is Alone worthy of worship? This was their excuse:
When it is said to them: "Follow what Allah hath revealed:" They say: "Nay! we shall follow the ways of our fathers." What! even though their fathers Were void of wisdom and guidance? [Qur'an 2: 170]

Their messengers said: "Is there a doubt about Allah, The Creator of the heavens and the earth? It is He Who invites you, in order that He may forgive you your sins and give you respite for a term appointed!" They said: "Ah! ye are no more than human, like ourselves! Ye wish to turn us away from the (gods) our fathers used to worship: then bring us some clear authority."

Their Messengers said to them: "We are no more than human beings like you, but Allah bestows His Grace to whom He wills of His slaves. It is not ours to bring you an authority (proof) except by the Permission of Allah. And in Allah (Alone) let the believers put their trust.

"And why should we not put our trust in Allah while He indeed has guided us our ways. And we shall certainly bear with patience all the hurt you may cause us, and in Allah (Alone) let those who trust, put their trust."

And those who disbelieved, said to their Messengers: "Surely, we shall drive you out of our land, or you shall return to our religion." So their Lord inspired them: "Truly, We shall destroy the Zalimun (polytheists, disbelievers and wrong-doers.).

"And indeed, We shall make you dwell in the land after them. This is for him who fears standing before Me (on the Day of Resurrection or fears My Punishment) and also fears My Threat."

But they (the Messengers) sought victory and help [from their Lord (Allah)], and every obstinate, arrogant dictator (who refuses to believe in the Oneness of Allah) was brought to a complete loss and destruction.

[Qur'an 14: 10-15]

Islaam which means submission to God was the religion of Jesus son of Mary and all the Prophets of God inc; Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, and you can agree yourself that there are many different versions of different saints, yet there is no Gospel of Jesus himself. For the different saints - there are different translations, but if it really is God's message - shouldn't it still be intact till today? How do we know which translation is correct if there is none in the original language to compare it with?

We know that the Gospel was revealed to Jesus son of Mary, yet it got distorted and this is well known as we can see today. So God should send a final Messenger to confirm what came before right? And this final revelation which He has sent to all of mankind clarified what came before and cleared up all the misconceptions people have.

Indeed, those who disbelieve in Allah and His messengers and wish to discriminate between Allah and His messengers and say, "We believe in some and disbelieve in others," and wish to adopt a way in between -

They are in truth disbelievers. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating torment.

And those who believe in Allah and His Messengers and make no distinction between any of them (Messengers), We shall give them their rewards, and Allah is Ever Oft*Forgiving, Most Merciful.

The people of the Scripture (Jews) ask you to cause a book to descend upon them from heaven. Indeed they asked Musa (Moses) for even greater than that, when they said: "Show us Allah in public," but they were struck with thunder clap and lightning for their wickedness. Then they worshipped the calf even after clear proofs, evidences, and signs had come to them. (Even) so We forgave them. And We gave Musa (Moses) a clear proof of authority.

And for their covenant, We raised over them the Mount and (on the other occasion) We said: "Enter the gate prostrating (or bowing) with humility;" and We commanded them: "Transgress not (by doing worldly works on) the Sabbath (Saturday)." And We took from them a firm covenant.

Because of their breaking the covenant, and of their rejecting the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, and of their killing the Prophets unjustly, and of their saying: "Our hearts are wrapped (with coverings, i.e. we do not understand what the Messengers say)" - nay, Allah has set a seal upon their hearts because of their disbelief, so they believe not but a little.

And because of their (Jews) disbelief and uttering against Maryam (Mary) a grave false charge (that she has committed illegal sexual intercourse);

And because of their saying (in boast), "We killed Messiah 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allah," - but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of 'Iesa (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man), and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not [i.e. 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary) ]:

But Allah raised him ['Iesa (Jesus)] up (with his body and soul) unto Himself (and he is in the heavens). And Allah is Ever All*Powerful, All*Wise.

And there is none of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), but must believe in him ['Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), as only a Messenger of Allah and a human being], before his ['Iesa (Jesus) or a Jew's or a Christian's] death (at the time of the appearance of the angel of death). And on the Day of Resurrection, he ['Iesa (Jesus)] will be a witness against them.

[Qur'an 4: 150-159]
