Do Not Speak Without Knowledge!

Shaykh Saalih Aal Taalib

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings of Allaah be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah and be dutiful to Him. Seek for His forgiveness and Paradise and do not be deluded by the life of this world.

Dear brethren! For decades, the Muslims have been living a life that contravened the teachings of the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, and that was far away from their glorious history. Their condition has reached a situation where the upright Muslim was regarded a stranger in most Muslim countries and among his brethren in faith. This was caused by the Muslims’ defeatism in the face of colonisation. The military occupation of the Muslim countries was less dangerous on the Muslim Ummah than ideological and cultural occupation in which the colonisers succeeded in convincing many Muslims that the age of Islaam has ended and that westernisation was an irresistible fact that should be accepted. As a result, the Muslims were forced to rely on the east and the west for their social and ideological future so much so that some Muslim countries shaped their life on systems that ran contrary to the teachings of Islaam.

This unfortunate phenomenon was caused by the scholars’ helplessness and the ignorance of the majority of the Muslims. This is the natural consequence of any nation that keeps away from the Book of its Lord. Allaah says,

“Verily! Allaah will not change the (good) condition of a people as long as they do not change their state (of goodness) themselves.”

(Ar-Ra‘d 13:11)

But when this darkness started disappearing and the light started replacing the darkness, the Ummah started witnessing a sincere return to the pristine teachings of Islaam. The mosques were becoming crowded with worshippers, the Sunnah was being revived and many youths were surging to the institutes of knowledge. The institution of Jihaad was enlivened and many men and women, young and old return to Islaam.

The more this resurgence gladdened the hearts of the righteous men, the more it saddened the disbelievers and the hypocrites. These hypocrites exert all their efforts to weaken the youths religiously and to slander the scholars and to defame this blessed resurgence. This blessed return of the Muslims to the right path angered the enemies of Islaam and they left no stone to kill it in its cradle. But all their vicious efforts failed to deter the Muslims from going forward, because; theirs is the religion of the truth and Allaah have promised them with victory and power as long as they remain on the straight path.

Fellow Muslims! As Islaam punishes its enemies with afflictions, it also, sometimes, punishes its adherents with afflictions if they neglect the right path.

We are therefore, calling on the Muslim youths who are the hope and the future of this Ummah to beware of those steps and excesses that could gladden the enemy and cause disunity among the Muslims. They should draw their views and activities from correct Islaamic knowledge learnt from pious scholars. They should keep away from deviant ideologies.

Dear Muslim youths! We believe that it is only the scholars who are qualified to determine the fate of the Ummah and proffer solutions to its problems. Their opinion should therefore be respected.

In the Battle of Badr, the Messenger of Allaah told his companions, “Advice me O people!” Aboo Bakr stood up and talked, followed by ‘Umar, Al-Miqdaad and Sa‘d bin Mu‘aadh one after another. These elder companions stood and talked in spite of the fact that there were, among the companions, young men who were like mountains in knowledge, chivalry and virtue. However, it is unfortunate that in this age, everybody wades into sensitive matters that affect the Ummah, and issues relating to the fate of this nation have become a grazing field for the ignorant people and members of the press. All have forgotten the instruction of the Messenger of Allaah that says, “Let those who have the vision and intelligence follow me.”

Dear brethren! Major issues like inviting the enmity of some nations, going into confrontations and deciding the battlefield are paths that should not treaded by the youths because of their inexperience and lack of proper understanding of matters. These issues should be left to the pious scholars who are well versed and experienced.

Now is the time to realize that, discussing matters relating to the fate of this Ummah is not for everybody. Expertise in the area of public lecture and admonition does not necessarily qualify one to meddle in those important issues. As we condemn the ignorant people and the enemy of Islaam for their interference in matters affecting the Ummah we also condemn the lovers of Islaam who do the same out of sentiments and without adequate knowledge and experience. Allaah says,

“When there comes to them some matter touching (public) safety or fear, they make it known (among the people); if only they had referred it to the Messenger or to those charged with authority among them, the proper investigators would have understood it from them (directly).”

(An-Nisaa 4:83)

Allaah also says,

“And insult not those whom they (disbelievers) worship besides Allaah, lest they insult Allaah wrongfully without knowledge.”

(Al-An‘aam 6:108)

Dear Muslim youths! As Islaam ordained war against the enemy it also encourages patience and steadfastness for the interest of Islaam and the Muslims in certain situations. Aboo Jandal, one of the companions of the Prophet was led in shackles by a mushrik in front of the Messenger of Allaah, though he possessed the greatest sense of honour among mankind because he knew that the end of that tribulation would be better for Aboo Jandal.

At the beginning of Islaam, the Muslims were very few and they experienced a lot of persecution at the hands of Makkan infidels and none of these persecuted companions was commanded to retaliate but only to have patience. Their implementation of this command led the companions to the favourable end and strength.

Brethren in faith! The conditions of the Muslims as per their strength or weakness and their victory or defeat should be given an utmost consideration while issuing the Islaamic rules. We therefore, need to have adequate preparation and patience, and we need to make much supplication to Allaah and return to the proper understanding of our religion. Our youths should also realize that they have great responsibilities to carry and prioritise them in accordance with the injunctions of Allaah so that this Ummah can reclaim its rightful leadership among the nations. Allaah says,

“So be patient (O Muhammad (peace be upon him)) verily, the Promise of Allaah is true and whether We show you (O Muhammad (peace be upon him) in this world) some part of what We have promised them, or We cause you to die then still it is to Us they all shall be returned.”

(Ghaafir 40:77)

Dear Muslim youths who are the future of this Ummah! We are calling on you to make a sincere return to the teachings of the Qur’aan and the Sunnah in the light of the understanding of the righteous predecessors. The provocations of the enemies and the natural sense of honour that the youths have for their religion are not excuses for contravening the injunctions of the Sharee’ah and the Sunnah in treating issues that affect the Ummah. Allaah commands us to worship Him in accordance with His law not according to our whims and individual judgments that go against the Qur’aan and the Sunnah.

According to the narration of Imaam Al-Bukhaaree in his Saheeh, the Messenger of Allaah entered into an agreement with the Makkan infidels during the Battle of Hudaybiyyah. Among the terms of the agreement were: the Prophet would not be allowed to perform ‘Umrah that year, but would only be allowed to do so in the following year; and that he would be obliged to turn back whoever came to him to embrace Islaam from Makkah but the Makkan infidels would not be obliged to turn back whoever apostates from Islaam and fled to them from Al-Madeenah. ‘Umar did not like the terms of this agreement. So he told the Prophet, “Are we not on the truth and they on falsehood? Why are we then accepting humiliation in matters of our religion?” And he argued with the Prophet about the matter. He then went to Aboo Bakr and told him the same thing. Aboo Bakr replied ‘Umar, “But he is the Messenger of Allaah and he does not go against the instruction of his Lord and He will certainly help him. So accept his decision, for he is on the truth.” It became clear at the end that what the Prophet did on that day was the best for the Ummah. ‘Umar later said, “I had to do some righteous deeds to atone for my argument with the Messenger of Allaah.”

The lesson of this incidence is that there should be no place for individual judgments in matters decided by Allaah and His Messenger even if their decisions apparently go against individual judgments.

Fellow Muslims! Lack of proper Islaamic knowledge is one the factors that turn the energy of the youth to affliction. Adequate Islaamic knowledge is therefore, an important element of guidance. It was when Ibn ‘Abbaas employed knowledge in his argument with the Khawaarij that 3000 men among them returned to the truth.

Dear brethren! Let us conclude this sermon with a story of the situation in which knowledge overwhelmed sentiments. Al-Bukhaaree reported that when the Prophet died, the companions broke into two ranks as regards his death. Some believed that he had actually died and emotions took the better side of others and they said that the Prophet did not and could not die. ‘Umar was among the latter group. He was so shocked and disorganized by the news of the Prophet’s death that he was stricken with disbelief and he threatened whoever dared to say that the Prophet had died. Aboo Bakr came to the mosque while ‘Umar was addressing people and said, “Sit down O ‘Umar.” But ‘Umar refused to sit down. So the people turned away from him and they faced Aboo Bakr. It was then that Aboo Bakr made his popular statement: “No doubt! Whoever worshipped Muhammad, then Muhammad is dead, but whoever worshipped Allaah, then Allaah is Alive and shall never die.” He then recited the verse:

"Muhammad is no more than an Messenger (of Allaah); and indeed many Messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is killed, will you then turn back on your heels? And he who turns back on his heels, not the least harm will he do to Allaah And Allaah will give reward to those who are grateful.”

(Aal ‘Imraan 3:144)

Ibn ‘Abbaas commented on this saying, “By Allaah! It was as if the people were unaware that Allaah had revealed this verse before Aboo Bakr recited it. Everybody then started reciting the verse.” ‘Umar said, “As soon as I heard Aboo Bakr recited this verse, I fell down on the ground and it was then that I knew that the Messenger of Allaah had actually died.”

Ibn Hajar said, “This hadeeth showed the courage of Aboo Bakr and his wide knowledge.” Behold also how ‘Umar accepted the truth and abandoned his emotions when he heard the decisive evidence.
