A problem I have found with online sources of hadith is that many of the sites do post non-authentic ones and present them as being authentic. Because there are so many hadith it is difficult for a non scholar to seperate the truth from the fraudulent.

I find it is far better to trust any books recommended by your local Imam as the initial readings. Although we can all gain from reading authentic hadith, it is much better to do so under the guidance of a scholar.

For self exploration I would only recommend the four books narrated by:

Sahih Bukhari
Sahih Muslim
Malik's Muwatta
Abu Dawud

A good ebook can be downloaded at:

http://www.imaanstar.com/

Be ready to read a lot, it has over 18,000 hadith.

Personally I will not trust online hadiths, they can easily be fabricated, unless they are published by reputable publishers. To be on the safe side just buy the hadith collection on book from publishers like darussalam.
