i like antiwar.com it's actually a libertarian site from australia, but they take news from a lot of different sources. and the name says it all.
though i'm not exactly a leftist, i like to use lefty sources because it counters the main stream.
http://democracynow.org/ is a radio/(i think it's on tv now too) program that you can listen to/watch on line. strong leftist bias, but good alternative to mainstream news.
not corporate sponsored
free speech radio news (again strong leftist bias)
http://www.fsrn.org/ not corporate sponsored.
i find the bbc very good too.
once in a while i will go to
http://english.aljazeera.net/English
2 lefty papers in uk
http://www.independent.co.uk/
http://www.guardian.co.uk/
there are lots more but that's all that comes to mind right now.
in general, i think it is good to go to as many different sources as possible, if you have the time and really want to get an idea what's going on.

hola maryam11,
you specifically asked about news for the muslim community... and i cannot necessarily suggest anything. but i really like
www.nationalgeographic.com,
www.npr.org,
www.csmonitor.com and
www.cfr.org for news and analysis about global issues. especially the first because when there is no serious news to report they like to do indepth studies on interesting cultures, places and events around the world. they also are pretty devoid of sensationalism and they all have very qualified contributors.

I recommend the Funday Times. It comes with the Sunday Times, and contains numerous comics such as Squirt, which is awesomely funny.
