Kate Allen, director of Amnesty International UK, has nominated Anas El-Banna, Jamil El-Banna's eldest son, as New Stateman's Person of the Year 2007. In spite of his young age (almost 11) and not having seen his father in over five years, Anas has worked hard for the release and return of his father, having written to Prince Charles and Tony Blair shortly after his father was kidnapped and rendered when he was six, followed by other letters to the Prime Minister, speaking on international TV and to press media, speaking at demonstrations around London and in parliament. Please support Kate Allen's nomination of Anas El-Banna by voting at http://www.newstatesman.com/200711150026

Person of the Year 2007

Published 15 November 2007

Your chance to vote for the person you think has done the most for the good of humanity this year. Which man or woman most demonstrated the better side of being human?

This week, we are launching the New Statesman Person of the Year Humanity Award. It's your chance to nominate someone who has done most in the past 12 months to inspire and enrich the lives of others, either in their community or profession, globally or locally. You have until 5 December to make your nomination.

Kate Allen, director of Amnesty UK, nominates Anas el-Banna
Anas el-Banna is the 11-year-old son of the Guantanamo prisoner and UK resident Jamil el-Banna. Jamil is one of more than 300 people still held without charge or trial at the notorious prison camp. Anas has led his family's struggle for justice for his father. At Amnesty we've been incredibly impressed as Anas has written to prime ministers, picketed No 10 and appeared on live television. He deserves recognition for his courage and determination.

Nominations must be in by 5 DECEMBER
