i totally understand with the tongue twisters!
i have quite a 'north-east' ( english ) accent and found saying some of the words.. especially one or 2 in my namaz quite difficult...
does it actually matter regarding accent? or must all the words be said in one certain way?

here we go (maybe a MOD could make this a sticky for "urdu resources"?

words and phrases:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/other..._phrases.shtml

on line text book:
http://dsal.uchicago.edu/digbooks/di...983.N2_1999_V1
http://dsal.uchicago.edu/digbooks/di...983.N2_1999_V2

dictionary
http://urduword.com/

i like these because they are stories of kids and the language is a bit simpler:

http://humsubdost.org/index.asp

http://www.urdupoint.com/children/home/

http://www.urduclassic.com/childrens.htm

i recently found some books that are pretty good - it is best if you already know urdu from hearing it cuz they're all in urdu. it's a series of books for kids.
they're from pakistan - i bought them through

http://www.desistore.com/urduchild.html

it's a series called learn urdu ("ao bacho urdu sikhen") and goes from grade 1 through 8. this same store has more children's books too.

bbc also comes in urdu and sometimes you can find the same story in english and urdu. they're not usually direct translations, but helpful anyway

i recently discovered that the islam question and answer site has both english and urdu - so you can often find the english translation for a specific urdu question.

http://islamqa.com/index.php?ln=eng
http://www.islam-qa.com/index.php?ln=urd

this is a yahoo group. you can get qur'an verses and hadees in your e-mail or you can go to the site. i like it especially cuz it has the english translation too.
description below.

Al-Qur'an
"And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember, then is there any that will receive admonition?"
(Surah Al-Qamar : 17)

Hadith

Allah's Messenger (sal-allahu-alleihi-wasallam) said:"Pass on knowledge from me even if it is only one verse"
(Sahih Bukhari)

i've been teaching myself urdu for several years now. i think it's a very beautiful language, but i have a hard time with it and it goes very slowly. i think that either i was smarter when i was younger, or i thought i was smarter than i really was! but i'm not giving up.
good luck!
