salaam i have been advised that in order to go to hajj i have to be debt free, i have just recently taken out a mortgage and have a student loan amount outstanding, now i know that if my debtors (the bank and loan company) allow me i can go for hajj but wouldn't it seem odd to approach a british bank and ask for permission as such if i want to go hajj next year? bearing in mind that i will still be making payments regardless if i don't or do go hajj

Tell me do your loans have interest (riba) on them? Remember riba is strictly haram. Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wa salaam said:

One dirham of interest is worse than thirty-six times of adultery
