I'm aware that dogs aren't accepted as pets in Islam - it's ok if they're used for working purposes and so on but not as pets since angels won't visit them if there's a dog in the house. However, it's in the hadiths that they are viewed that way, not in the Quran since I came accross 18:17 which talks about a couple of youngsters in a cave and sleeping for 300 years and they have a dog with them.

"And thou wouldst have deemed them waking though they were asleep, and We caused them to turn over to the right and the left, and their dog stretching out his paws on the threshold. If thou hadst observed them closely thou hadst assuredly turned away from them in flight, and hadst been filled with awe of them." 18:17
Does this mean that angels did visit the cave, even with a dog there?

that was not in Muhammad era... so they had their own regulation from Allah... that might be quiet different...

so, that was fine and the angels, i believe, came to the cave to keep the sleeping people in the cave...
