Greetings,

Hurricanes and other severe storms are given names to distinguish them. The names can be both male or female.

Here's some info about the names, from my ever trusty source, wikipedia!

Hurricane Names - see List III for Katrina and Rita.

Peace

It depends which list is used. The names are just arbitrary and don't really mean anything, they're just used by meteorologists to distinguish severe storms.

I think Aalimah was being ironic.

Plus, I think we've established that hurricanes are given male and female names - it's just a coincidence that the two in the news recently were both given women's names.

eh? Too much free posting going on in this thread if you ask me. Not all hurricanes are named after women, i recall in the many that hit Florida last year a few were named after men. Also the nameing goes by Alphabetical order, and keeps rotating from what i have heard.

Edit: Who cares?

I heard from a very unreliable source that hurricanes were named after women having their er... time of the month.

Needless to say, that's total nonsense. Funny nonsense. But nonsense nontheless.

Is it just me or were there way too many n's and s's in that last sentence?

Anyway, see czgibson's posts for the real naming pattern. :)

What is it that has given you this idea?

Have a look at the lists of names given to hurricanes here:

The names again

As you can see, in each list there is a male name, then a female name. This alternation continues right the way through - there's no bias towards male or female.

basically, they are given intercahning gender names. While the first hurricane may start the the letter "a" and may start with a womans name, the next one would start with "b" and given a mans name. Then "c" would be a womans name and "d" would be a mans name and so on.
Then for another yaer the first name would start with a mans name and then female and so on.
