This is a poem for my Grandfather, who died in 1997. May Allah grant him and all the marhumeen Jannatul-Firdos.
I am going to inform you, again, like my poem 'Do you still love me, Mum?' it may be a little long for some readers.
I hope you can all relate to it, somehow :)

Dear Grandad

Dear Grandad,
Thanks for your lovely letters,
I always found it funny everytime
You admiringly complimented my handwriting,
And when you asked , “Are you sure you wrote this yourself?”
Yes, I did, Grandad. I did it myself.
Isn’t it great?
So please don’t cry, Grandad. I’ll be back soon. And I want you to know that you make me happy.

And I loved it when you walked
To and from the mosque in the dark,
Along the dusty, unlit, pot holed roads,
And I waited for you, face pressed against the window,
And my heart jumped when I saw you walking through the gate.
So please don’t cry, Grandad. I’ll be back soon. And I want you to know that you make me happy.

And everytime we played that hand game,
You let me win – I see that now.
And you said what a strong girl Allah had made me.
Then you feigned admiration
When I told you my school grades
- Because of course, you already knew I had done well in those exams.
“86 per cent?!” And you dazzled that toothless grin of yours.
So please don’t cry, Grandad. I’ll be back soon. And I want you to know that you make me happy.

So sorry to hear you’re unwell, Grandad.
Have some water; can I get you a pillow? Can I massage your feet?
Please, you’re scaring me when you look at me so deeply like that…
Do you want to tell me something, Grandad?
It’s painful for me to hear your rasping breathing.
I’m here Grandad, I’m here.
To tell you of my experiences and stories, like you used to tell me yours.
But of course, mine aren’t as exciting as yours – snakes, jungles and fire don’t feature in mine.
So please don’t cry, Grandad. I’ll be back soon. And I want you to know that you make me happy.

You didn’t take much with you did you, Grandad?
No one takes anything with them though, to the Hereafter,
Your house and family – untouched, just as you left them.
In the grave, it’s just you, yourself and your deeds.
It’s ironic too – you said you’d never go to that land,
But your illness meant you were forced to go there –
and there you are still.
The last look you gave me – we both knew,
Me wearing green and white – “What are you praying, Grandad?”
“Laa – ilaaha- ilallah – Muhammad – urasoolullah.”
That’s nice, Grandad. It sounds nice.
So please don’t cry, Grandad. I’ll be back soon. And I want you to know that you make me happy.

You’re gone Grandad.
I’m sleeping on your bed,
And in the corner of the room, I can see your walking stick against the wall,
And your bluey-grey sweater hung behind the door,
And I am sorry that when I came to see your body laying in that room
I was whispering to my mum about how I’d forgotten to brush my teeth…
You looked really peaceful lying there.
I was crying, Grandad, but I’ll be back soon to visit you. Maybe I will see you face to face...
I really want you to know, still, that you made me laugh, smile and that you made me happy.

And I also want you to know…
I’m still waiting for your letters.
And I’m waiting for you to come back from the mosque at my window,
I can’t wait to play that hand game with you (I’m going to win of course – or I might consider letting you win for a change)
And I can’t wait to tell you my University marks,
To hear your stories, to see your dazzling toothless smile.
I’m not going to cry now, I’m not.
But you left me.
And I’m still glad we never got to say goodbye properly, Grandad,
Because…. I know… we will meet again, maybe soon – but definitely in the future.
Allah has made it so.
