like for example....
1-instead of usin "jecelyahay" use "jeclahay" coz u talkin about ur self.
"because" in somali is "sabab too ah"
2-again replace the "jecelyahay" with "jeclahay"
3-and again the "jecel....." u get the point:D
"la coyaro" =la ciyaaro.
4- u got it..:)
5-looooooooool this is so funny:giggling: "walalo haq":? u tranlating the exact english word to somali.....that is not right. well u got one of them..it is "dumaaashi" and the other one is "seedi" as sis Umm Ilyaah said.
6-Sadex sadex lagu dhuftay waa sagaal.:)

That explanation has been rejected by many. The most accepted explanation is that it has been derived from 'go and milk' (soo-maal) and was often said by the Somalis when the ancient traders such as ancient Egyptians (Pharaohs), Arabs, Chinese, etc used to visit the coast. This used to denote their hospitality by always serving milk to visitors.

yeah sis I totally agree with ya..
the Spanish Language is like that too...u don't have to worry about memorizing the spellings of words.....u just write it exactly how u prounounce it.....no tricks no nothin.....is not like English where u have to know the exact, unique spellin of words....4 example the words
"Phone" "photograph" "height" Knot" tsunami"
Spanish is almost like somali only that Spanish has more Alphabets than the somali ....like 4 example
"ll" in spanish is pronounce
"elyey" not
"double L" like in English.
"LL" in Spanish is one word.

Also it is important in the Somali language that you pronounce and write the long vowels otherwise you would change the whole meaning of the words.
For example,
dad(ka) means people and daad(ka) means flood
Similiary for long consonants
beri(ga) means day and berri means tomorrow
xabad(ka) means chest and xabbadda means bullet

Thats where i get stuck ^ aa ii ee uu (is there uu?) and all that, i don't know when to make it long and when not to? is there a guideline we can follow?
and a e is tricky too, like now i woulda spelt beriga with an a, bariga...
lol just in that explanation i learnt 3 new words... shukran!

I know it might seem tricky at first, but it eventually becomes quite easy and you just know if the word seems right or not..........
When a word contains a long vowel then they're pronounced stretched.....
for examle.
caano......or.....cano?
caato.....or......cato?
soo bax....or.....so bax?
bax...or.... baax?
kaale.....or......kale?
Lol, weird examples.....but you can tell which one looks right..........(right?)

There is
aa, ee, oo, uu. It is just the same as al-madd in 'arabiyyah (Somali used to be writen in the Arabic script before 1970) and can only be acquired by reading alot or repeating in your head before you write to determine the exact vowel. Also, the 'e' is not the same as the 'e' in the english language, rather it is the same as 'a' in the english alphabet and that's why some of those Somali youngsters living in UK have trouble with it as opposed to the Somalis who grew up with the dutch alphabet.
Another point that is often neglected by many is the hamza. It is written as an apostrophe like,
su'aal(sha) and not suaal(sha)
masaa'ib(ka) and not masaaib(ka)

:w:
'D' (da') is the same as daal like 'dab', but 'DH' (dha) sounds the same as the arabic dhaal but more clearer. With the arabic dhaal, the tip of your tongue touches the back of your incisors (front teeth) but with the somali 'DH', the tip of your tongue touches the roof of the mouth like dhul (ground, land).
Try some of these words and see the difference:
dhal (offspring)
dhac (fall down)
dhar (clothes)
dhuun (throat)
Also, if the DH is placed at the end of the word, you do not pronounce it as
dha but as
'R
'.
So badh (half) is pronounced as barr and gabadh (girl) as gabarr.

Interesting....Would the word "Dhan-Dhaan" Or "Dhanaan" as in sour.. be used also with that "D" this is pronounced like the arabic "Ta" (the one with the stick) sax!!
So badh (half) is pronounced as barr and gabadh (girl) gabarr.
MashaAllah, is that the Proper and only way of sayin those two!? I've always been pronouncin' them with the way they're spelt..Allahul Musta3aan!!

No, it would be pronounced with the clearer DH
I have found a good page that lets you hear how it sounds:
(DH)
(D)
Click on the letters.
Anyone who wants to hear the full alphabet should go here:
http://ww2.saturn.stpaul.k12.mn.us/s...onsonants.html (for consonants)
http://ww2.saturn.stpaul.k12.mn.us/s...betvowels.html (vowels)

The dh is only included in formal texts, but you do not pronounce it as dha but as r. However, you will rarely find the dh consonant used at the end, they mostly use the 'r'.

That is what you call a homonym (words having the same sound and spelling).
It is a grammatical rule in the Somali language that if words are identical (homonyms), gender should be used.
So beer(ta) is the feminine noun for farm/garden whilst beer(ka) is the masculine noun for liver.
A few examples where homonyms are distinguished by using gender:
hal(sha) - female camel (feminine)
hal(ka) - one (masculine)
samaan(ka) - time/era/epoch (masculine)
samaan(ta) - goodness (feminine)
gees(ka) - horn (masculine)
gees(ta) - direction/corner/side (feminine)

Wuxuu xaaskiisii ku yidhi buste i saar dushana caano dhanaan kaga shub si duqsigu uu ugu bato, oo haday ragii soo laabtaan oo ikaa waydiiyaan waxaad ku tiraahdaa waa dhintay. Qadaryar dabadeed ayaa niman yimaadeen, waxay waydiiyeen xaaskii in cigaal joogo, waxay tiri cigaal waa dhintey, waxay yiraahdeen goorma ayuu dhintey cigaal, kadibna way yara aamustay, (ileen cigaal waqtigaa ku dheh muu ku orane) inteysan u jawaabinba cigaal ayaa soo booday oo yiri "naa shalay dheh, shalaan dhintey dheh"

A few examples where homonyms are distinguished by using gender:
hal(sha) - female camel (feminine)
hal(ka) - one (masculine)
But for the female camel surely it doesnt contain a Laam?

When adding the female definite article (ta) to words that end with laam, the laam is removed and sha (sheen) is added.
So
hal = female camel
hasha = the female camel

I think it's the way you said it samiya.. hasha that's how i heard it..
When adding the female definite article (ta) to words that end with laam, the laam is removed and sha (sheen) is added.
I think it was a mistake actually, read this text Walaal!!
So
hal = female camel
halsha = the female camel
It don't add up,it's just a mistake InshaAllah.. Wallaahu a3lam!

Nice lessons on here, keep going.
One little correction, though: it is 'hasha.' When a syllable letter 'sh' [particularly when it is 'sha'] is added at the end of a word, thus if the last letter on that said word is 'l,' it is omitted, thus in this case the letter 'l' of hal becoming hasha.
Other examples are meel and ul. If meel becomes "the" meel, it thus changed to meeshaan.
Ul becomes usha.
There are other letters that involve this advanced grammatical system, but can't recall now.

It can also be said meesha or meeshaan.
Darn, one can't edit once one posts on this forum? I can't see the edit feature.
And about the difference between the light dh and r, it is regional variation. The Northerners, particularly those who hail from notherwest of the country, pronounce and write 'yidhi,' while the Southerners say 'yiri.' Same with gabadh and gabar. Or sanboodh and sanboor.

Indeed the somali language is intresting...subhan Allah. Few difference b/w the Northerners and Southerner. One thing that confuses me is the Sacda "Time"...
You know what im talking about right:rollseyes

You are correct akhee, mahadsanid.
What I do not understand is in when the definite female article is added to feminine nouns ending in
dh, dha is added and thus becoming
gabadhdha (the girl), however, in the writing system, the extra dh is never added and they generally write
gabadha. Any reason why?

There is something called
lammaanaha, Qadaafi. Some letters are doubled, where it is appropriate. The letters such as
b, d, dh, g, l, m, n, and r. It isn't always that they get doubled, but in some. One reason is they differentiate between two same-sounding words, but different meanings.
For the
dh, though, is among the doubled letters, it is very rarely is used, and when it is used, it almost always happens in the middle, not at the end of the word. Soomaalis now currently ignore most of these doubled letters, where there is much confusion which letter to double and which shouldn't.
Yes, only very advanced writers of Soomaali language does know where and when. Very confusing? It sure is.

that's not true
that's like saying English is not a written language because it's written in the Latin script
Arabic was for somalis what Latin is for the whole of Europe
