A large number of Asian and European expatriates have, in order to learn Arabic and Holy Quran memorisation, recently joined the many centres of the Shaikh Maktoum Project for Teaching Quran Memorisation in various locations in Dubai, Iman Ismail Abdullah, Executive Supervisor of the Project, has said.

She told Khaleej Times that the project, which is part of Dubai Auqaf and Islamic Affairs Department, has accepted more than 300 people of various nationalities, especially Asians and Europeans, who have shown eagerness and interest in memorising the Holy Quran and learning Arabic language.

Iman said the project, the financial expenses for which are borne by His Highness Shaikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, is providing services for male and female students in 43 centres in various areas of the Emirate.

The project was aimed at encouraging Muslims including adults and children to memorise the entire Holy Quran, providing practical and theoretical sessions on "Tajweed (perfection of reading) science and the art of recitation, as well as lectures on Islamic values and teachings.

Mohammed Al Ahdal, Technical Supervisor of the programme, said the project helps in qualifying the people to participate in Dubai's International Holy Quran Award and other local and international awards and contest in various countries.

The Auqaf selects qualified teachers to help students memorise the Holy Quran, by testing them on the efficiency in performing such tasks.

The teachers are also being supervised by instructors who are responsible for evaluating every six months the proficiency of the teachers and review the performance of students at these centres.

As part of the project, the Auqaf also organises contests, with winners receiving cash prizes between Dh2,000 to Dh10,000, in an attempt to encourage students to memorise the entire Holy Quran.

The teachers also receive cash rewards for introducing excellent memorisers who successfully qualify for Holy Quran awards and contests. There are many Asians and Europeans who memorise the entire Holy Quran and pronounce it perfectly.

The project encourage all nationalities specially Europeans to join the memorisation centres and learn Islamic teachings to help correct the misconception about Islam in their countries.
“Our duty is to present to the people the Holy Quran, which guides and protects them from going astray,” he said.
