The Prohibition of Buying and Selling in the Masjid

It is prohibited to buy and sell in in the Masjid. The Masjid is not built to be a store or marketplace; instead it is built for the remembrance of Allah, for establishing prayer, for educating Muslims about their religious affiars, and so on. In fact, if you see a man buying or selling anything in the Masjid, you should make a supplication against him, saying, "May Allah not make your trade profitable."
    Source

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah said,

"If you see someone buy or sell in the Masjid, then say, 'May Allah not make your trade profitable." - [At-Tirmidhi - Hasan]

Note: Because of the grading of the Hadeeth, scholars have differed about its application. Some scholars, such as Ahmad and Ishaq, have ruled that it is Makrooh (disliked) to buy and sell in the Masjid. Other scholars have ruled that it is permissible to buy and sell in the Masjid. And the Hadeeth is also related by Ad-Daarimee (1401).

“O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salaat (prayer) on Friday (Jumu'ah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allaah [Jumu'ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salaat (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing).”

    (Surah Al-Jumu'ah, 62:9)

They (the Sahaabah) used to buy/sell outside the masjid and when he heard a man crying out in the mosque about something he had lost, he said: “May Allah not restore it to you.” [1] So all that is related to this matter should not occur in the masjid.

The Shaykh was further asked about buying and selling in the masjid if the intent behind the trade is to benefit the masjid. He replied by saying that even if it is for the benefit of the masjid it is not permissible to buy, sell and do trade in the masaajid. The exchange of money from hand to hand should be done outside the masjid.

    — Shaykh Abdullaah Al-Ghudyaan (rahimahullah)

Actually all scholars agree that buying and selling in the masjid is prohibited. But there is difference of opinion about the area of masjid where buying and selling is prohibited. There are scholars who say that it include the whole are of masjid, there are scholars who say that this is cover only the masjid hall and does not include other rooms or other section like garden or parking area. That's why in some masjid we can find shops.

Thinking about it I see two main areas of thoughts.

    1) the compound itself, like what br. ardianto described or

    2) that the trade occurs even after the call to prayer is made and delaying to close down for business until after when people start to arrive for prayers.

If masjid allows trading activity in its area, does not mean there's no etiquette for trading there. One ethic is, when azan has echoed, the trading activity should be paused until salah finished.
