Hairstyles and cutting hair? cultural or islamic?

    Report bad ads?

    Hey guys
Salaam, i hope ive posted in the right forum i dont know my way around here still abit lost so guide me please lol

Anyways since i cant access the sisters room [MAD][/MAD] i thought id ask you lovely people a question here.

In my culture girls arent really allowed to cut their hair, maybe whens its extremly overgrown they are allowed to trim it from the bottom. My hair mashallah is very thick and since i was little my mums never let me cut it, so yup ive had to walk around with a big bush on my head, Now though ive had my hair cut so its easier to manage but my mum wasnt happy an my dad told me off. Ooops. Anyway so i said to my parents no one can see my hair, im wearing a hijab, im not flaunting it around.

I want to know if this is cultural or islamic, is hairstyling permitted in islam and cutting it say into layers, maybe having a fringe or having it thinned, even dying hair? Is it allowed to make ur hair look pretty and neat for yourself?

OK now im not married, but if i was would i be allowed to cut my hair if my husband wanted me to?

Re: Hairstyles and cutting hair? cultural or islamic?

    wa'alaykum as-salam
Question: Is it permissible for a woman to cut her hair before doing ghusl following menses?

    Answer: Praise be to Allaah.

There is nothing wrong with cutting one’s nails or hair before doing ghusl following menses or afterwards, but a woman should take care, when cutting her hair, to avoid resembling men or kaafir women.

The fact that it is permissible for a woman to cut her hair short is indicated by the report narrated by Muslim (320) from Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmaan who said: The wives of the Prophet (S) used to cut their hair so that it came down just past their ears.

al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
al-Qaadi ‘Iyaad (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Perhaps the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did that after the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), because they stopped adorning themselves and they had no need to grow their hair long, so they reduced the amount of effort required to take care of their hair. What al-Qaadi ‘Iyaad said about them doing that after his death and not during his lifetime was also said by others and it is sound. No one should think that they did that during his lifetime. This indicates that it is permissible for women to cut their hair, and Allaah knows best. End quote.
Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: We do not know of anything wrong with women cutting their hair. What is forbidden is shaving the head. You are not allowed to shave your head, but if you cut it to make it shorter or reduce its volume, we do not know of anything wrong with that. But that should be done in a good way that will be pleasing to you and your husband, and you can agree with him on something that will not be similar to the hairstyle of kaafir women because leaving it long will entail a lot of work to wash it and comb it. If the hair is thick and the woman cuts some of it to make it shorter and reduce its volume, there is nothing wrong with that. If she cuts some of it for purposes of beautification to make it pleasing to her and her husband, there is nothing wrong with that. But shaving it altogether is not permissible except in cases of sickness. And Allaah is the source of strength. End quote from Fataawa al-Mar’ah al-Muslimah (2/515).
Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan (may Allaah preserve him) said:
It is not permissible for a woman to cut her hair at the back and leave the sides long, because this is ugly and messing with her hair which is part of her beauty, and it is also an imitation of kaafir women. The same applies to cutting it in different styles with the names of kaafir women or animals, such as the Diana cut, which is the name of a kaafir woman, or the lion cut or mouse cut, because it is haraam to imitate kaafir women or animals, and because this is messing with the woman’s hair which is part of her beauty. End quote from Fataawa al-Mar’ah al-Muslimah (2/516, 517).
    And Allaah knows best.

But it says they propthets wives cut thier hair short. But ive read a hadith that said dont cut your hair so that it resembles a mans hairstyle. Men are allowed to grow their hair to their shoulders rite so that means womens hair has to be longer then shoulder length right?

I'm glad to read that. Whenever i cut my hair, i felt guilty because i'd heard some ppl say women shouldn't cut their hair. Alhamdullilah that it's allowed. Now i can cut my hair freely!

    Salam,
Yes sure it's a culture thing and not Islamic. I've heard this many times before. It's really a pity that not everyone knows it.

Re: Hairstyles and cutting hair? cultural or islamic?

What i don't get is that "kafir" women also have long hair, so if a Muslim women has a long hair does that mean that she is imitating the "kafir" women?

There is also the cultural perspective, people from different cultures have different hair-styles regardless if they are Muslims or not. As far as I'm concerned it is all about the intentions.

And what is ugly is just a matter of perspective to be honest. Some hair-cuts look beautiful on some women and ugly on other women. Some women barely have any hair at all, that does not mean that they are less beautiful.

    But Allah knows best.

What, I never heard coloring your hair is bad. People even use henna in their hair, especially if white and men do the same in their beards. As far as I know, you cant do black.

Actually you misunderstood it was a sin in the sense that i was not intending to wear hijab and i would attract a lot of unwanted attention lol
