Why do Muslims not believe Jesus was crucified?

    Report bad ads?

Hi all, another one of my questions

I don't believe in the Christian reason as to why Jesus was crucified i.e. to die for the sins of man etc. However apart from religion being crucified was common at the time. Why do Muslims not believe this happened to Jesus?

    Thanks

    Hi Crystal,

Simply because Allah has said so in the Quran.

Re: Why do Muslims not believe Jesus was crucified?

Does it make sense for 'God' to be crucified? After God spent the night praying to himself in Gethsemane, asking himself why he has forsaken himself as he lays victim to a couple of provincial oafs and then forsaking himself anyway?

Re: Why do Muslims not believe Jesus was crucified?

    sister crystal,
if you get a conflicting account, the first thing you'd have to look at is which account holds up to scrutiny,

we are told he was crucified on Friday (good friday)
taken down from the cross on friday evening before sunset (start of sabbath - as it was considered an abomination to have crucified people hanging on the sabbath)
and on sunday morning (first day of the week) - mary magdalene comes to "anoint him with spices" and finds nobody there.

firstly - it is a fact that people do not go to anoint bodies after three days, (anoint means rub) because you can't rub spices and perfumes into a body which has been decomposing for three days, neither was it a jewish practice to remove tombstones and rub decomposing bodies with perfumes and spices after three days.

Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. 2And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. 3And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. 4And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: 5And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? 6He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, 7Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. 8And they remembered his words,9And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.
10It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.
11And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not. 12Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.
    Luke 24

But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done. 22Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; 23And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.
    Luke 24:21-23

what is this "three day" statement?

Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
    39But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign;
and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
    40For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly;
so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

    Matthew 12:38-40

now we see that first he mentioned that it would be an evil and adulterous generation - and he was not living among such at the time of the first coming.
and the emphasis was on three days and three nights - repeated twice.

in the semitic regions - the day begins after sunset of that night rather than at 12am - and continues through to sunset.

    let's count:
    saturday night
    sataurday day
    sunday night

and on sunday morning (easter sunday) - nobody is there.

we have a total of 1 day and 2 nights,

even if he had just said "3 days", it wouldn't add up, since there was nobody there on sunday morning.
it would be just friday and saturday,
but even more dam*ing is that three days AND three nights was EMPHASIZED.

we can clearly see that this is not a fulfilment of that prophecy and that it didn't happen in that age.
if you look at the signs of the second coming as mentioned in the bible and the hadith.
you find it is a time of sexual immorality and decadence.

    it says in revelation:
Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him:
and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
    Revelation 1:7

we know for a fact that those people didn't have skype or satellite tv broadcasting, and that every eye could not see him.
and that all kindreds of the earth didn't wail as people in england had not even heard of him.

we do know from the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) that the time where this type of thing occurs is near the end:

Mahdi means: The One Who Is Rightly Guided.
Certain it is that IN THE TIME OF HAZRAT MAHDI (AS)IF A BELIEVER IS IN THE EAST HE WILL SEE HIS BROTHER IN THE WEST.AND IF HE IS IN THE WEST, HE WILL SEE HIS BROTHER IN THE EAST. (Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 52, p. 391)

Hazrat Mahdi (as) will (spiritually) conquer both east and westand cause Islam (the moral values of Islam) to rule the world
    ...
ALLAH WILL BESTOW SUCH POWERS ON PEOPLE THATEVERYONE WILL HEAR HIS (THE MAHDI’S (AS)) WORDS,WHEREVER THEY MAY BEand Imam (as) will give life to Islam...

so it can be confidently stated that either that event didn't happen at the time, or whoever added those verses made big mistakes.

Re: Why do Muslims not believe Jesus was crucified?

Thanks for all the answers but I am not interested what it says in the Christian scripture and how its false because I already don't believe in them. I have just come across a few articles about crucification and thought maybe Jesus was crucified since it was common at the time but maybe people made up the wrong story about the whole thing.

SFatima thanks for the link - So do Muslims believe Jesus is in heaven now? And I understand they also believe Jesus will come again near the end of the world so is it then that Muslims believe Jesus will really die?

Re: Why do Muslims not believe Jesus was crucified?

just to add to all the answers:

There was no witness that Jesus died in crucifixion.
in bible, NO ONE stayed with him.
Now, do you not think it's strange that if Jesus (pbuh) were really crucified, none of his disciples were there?
The only logical conclusion would be that the disciples knew that it was not Jesus (pbuh) who was crucified.

We believe God saved him from it, and there's many instances when God saved his prophets from the punishment of people such as when Abraham was thrown into the fire, such as when Moses was saved from Pharaoh that night when all the babies in the village were being slaughtered, Such as when Muhammed was saved from the plot of the Quraish to murder him while he slept in his bed, also Jesus was saved from the evil plot of his people to crucify him, just like previous prophets were saved from the evil plotting of their people.

If you'd like any more information about the above stories let me know, yes we believe Jesus will return at the end of the times to kill the dajjal (anti christ) and yes we believe that's when he will die his first death.

Yes, prophet Jesus pbuh is in paradise.
By the leave of Allah SWT, Prophet Muhammad SAW also visited all the seven levels of paradise during Isra' Mi'raj.

The People of the Scripture ask you to bring down to them a book from the heaven. But they had asked of Moses [even] greater than that and said, "Show us Allah outright," so the thunderbolt struck them for their wrongdoing. Then they took the calf [for worship] after clear evidences had come to them, and We pardoned that. And We gave Moses a clear authority.
And We raised over them the mount for [refusal of] their covenant; and We said to them, "Enter the gate bowing humbly", and We said to them, "Do not transgress on the sabbath", and We took from them a solemn covenant.
And [We cursed them] for their breaking of the covenant and their disbelief in the signs of Allah and their killing of the prophets without right and their saying, "Our hearts are wrapped". Rather, Allah has sealed them because of their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few.
And [We cursed them] for their disbelief and their saying against Mary a great slander,
And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah ." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.
No indeed, Allah raised him up to Him; and Allah has been Ever-Mighty, Ever-Wise.

That maybe but you will agree that's not the prevailing christian sentiment? We've to take the events as they unfolded it in totality not in part. Either way it wouldn't make sense whether he were a prophet or God to spend a night in prayer (be a messenger of God) and then be forsaken by him.. If God forsakes a hand picked 'messenger' or mini god, why would he not do the same of the general public, whose whole belief in christian salvation rests upon God dying for them? God couldn't save himself in this case how could he save billions?

Either way I am merely attacking these events due to loss of logical consistency but I see many others who've quoted you biblical passages that are so contradictory, that there's no telling what really transpired in Jesus' last hours on earth (as per bible)

Ramadhan: does that mean all the prophets are in heaven now? Also yes I read those verses in the quran before - I am just wondering whether or not Muslims reject that there was a plan to crucify Jesus - I get the point that they don't believe he was crucified. (I presume there was a plan since Muslims believe God saved Jesus from this act).

    Thanks again.

Well I agree there are many contradictions in the bible which is why I want to know more about Islam because I believe in God. I was just wondering whether or not there was any chance Jesus was crucified without the whole story of he died for the sins of man attached to it i.e. was he crucified just for being a prophet of God but I can see that Islam rejects that.

Thanks for that I think that pretty much clears it up =)

The verses from Al-Imran above clearly indicate that Jesus (p) knew he was being betrayed, but Allah swt divine comfort and promise prevails. I personally trust in a God that would exonerate me against my enemies not one who would forsake me but that's taking it down to the lowest common denominator!
