Subjecting the Qur'an to scientific theories

Report bad ads?

Edit: Qur'anic "scientific verses" are just a contemplation and are not accepted as tafsir of theQur'an.

The third question of Fatwa no. 9247

Question 3: What is the ruling on scientific books of Tafsir (exegesis of the meanings of the Qur’an)?

Answer: No reference should be made to any books of Tafsir which contain invalid interpretations like interpreting the Qur’anic Ayah (verse) saying (what means): <<Have not those who disbelieve known that the heavens and the earth were joined together as one united piece, then We parted them? And We have made from water every living thing. >> as meaning that the earth used to be part of the sun and due to the speedy rotation of the sun on its axis, the earth detached from it. Some time later, the surface of the earth cooled down while the interior part remained hot. The earth then joined the nine planets of the known solar system orbiting the sun. Scientific books of Tafsir which support such theories are not reliable.

The same holds true of other books of Tafsir whose authors prove the theory of the earth’s rotation based on deduction from the Qur’anic Ayah which states: <<And you will see the mountains and think them solid, but they shall pass away as the passing away of the clouds. >>These kinds of Tafsir change the words of the Qur’an out of their natural context in an attempt to subject them to so-called "scientific theories" which are no more than hypothetical assumptions and speculative suppositions.

Falling under the same category are all such books of Tafsir which depend on introducing novel theories

( Part No : 4, Page No: 181)

which are not known to have an origin in the Qur’an or Sunnah (whatever is reported from the Prophet) or in the opinions of the Salaf (righteous predecessors) of the Islamic Ummah (nation). The obvious reason is that the authors of these books invent inadvertent fallacies against Allah (Exalted be He).

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions!

Also read the Fatwa :
Is it permissible or even acceptable for someone to state their personal contemplations on the Qur’an or what scholars call “Lata’if Al-Tafsir (Subtleties of Qur’an Interpretation) although they are not based on any Hadith Mawquf (a Hadith narrated from a Companion of the Prophet) or Hadith Marfu‘ (a Hadith narrated from the Prophet with a connected or disconnected chain of narration)?

He is the one who sent upon you the book: some of its verses are clear (muhkamât)—these are the basis of the Book, while others are allegorical (mutashâbihât).
“As for those in whose hearts is perversity, they follow the allegorical verses, seeking to mislead and seeking to give (their own) interpretation. None know their (i.e., allegorical verses') interpretation except Allah and those who are firmly rooted in knowledge…” (3:7)

Edit: Qur'anic scientific verses are just a contemplation and are not accepted as tafsir of theQur'an.

I see that, the Quran teaches and explains God, and his rules, and the way to life, not science.

Using Science as a judge is not correct.
That is because the scientific community is lying to us.

I shall give you a small example.
We are told that the moon reflects the Sun's light.
Here is an experiment.
1)-In daytime,if you stand in a shade of a tree,it is colder than outside.Meaning,
That the Temperature of Sun rays is higher than that we feel in shade.
2)-Now do this at night time.
YOU WILL FEEL COLD IN DIRECT MOONLIGHT,THAN IN SHADE OF A TREE.
The moonlight is colder than the shade.
This proves that the moon has its own light. That it is not reflecting Sun's light.

I would recommend more study on the nature of light and heat, and also on Einstein's discoveries. Note that we now can correctly calculate Mercury's orbit (Newton's laws cannot) and that GPS satellites work.

If moon emitted its own light, then moon would emit heat too. So you would feel hotter under direct moonlight than under shade of tree.

Also, if moon had its own light, how could the bright area of the moon always changed, so we can see full moon, half moon, crescent, or even dark moon when the moon eclipse?.

Let us not give our personal opinions on what the Quran specifies of certain things which are not mentioned in the Qur'an in the first place.

Allah does not give us "detailed" scientific information in the Quran for that is not the point of his message to mankind. He only specifies his creations so that we may think and ponder and realise his greatness.

جزاك الله خيرا sister, I have changed the thread title now. I think the main point here is that a proper methodology needs to be applied when extracting scientific facts from the Qur'an, and not placing too much emphasis on this type of tafseer as the Salaf did not do so. It is true that the Qur'an contains scientific facts but to presume this is the primary purpose of revelation is wrong.

The Islamic Golden Age proves to me that Islam and science can coexist peacefully. Islamic scholars made advances in astronomy, mathematics, chemistry, agriculture, architecture, etc., during that period of theocratic rule -- as well as preserving more ancient knowledge from Greece, Rome, and other cultures.

This is true. The Qur'an is not a science or history book, or it would be 10x its size.
