    Why hijab only for women

    Report bad ads?

    Good evening
I am a non muslim, but my husband is Muslim. I have many questions that could never been answered.
One of my questions is : why do men do not have to wear the hijab? According to the explanations of Muslim People, women wear it because it protect them from bad look g of men, and also to show themselves only to their husband. What I don't understand, is why men don't protect themselves from the looks of the women? Because if the religion admits that womens hair is something Beautifull as a temptation, why it deny that it's the same fir men? We look at the men, at their hair, their arms, chest etc... Not only me, all women. We will talk about the guys and about how they look, if they are handsome, sexy etc...
Please understand that this is not a provocation but really a question. I beg respect when you answer, and I would be so thankful if someone who really knows the subject could answer me. It would help me a lot.
Thank you so much and I wich everyone a good and peaceful evening.

Re: Why hijab only for women

Hello Lissa and welcome to the forum,

The first and foremost reason why women wear Hijab is because this is what God has commanded. Islam means submitting to God. For the believer, obedience to his/her Lord and submission to His command take priority over all other things. We follow His commands because we are aware that He is the Creator who knows what is best for His creation. In addition, God's Decrees and Judgements are just and wise, and He has given rulings that are suitable for the different natures of men and women, hence in Islam we find some rulings that are particular to men and others that are particular to women. If we ponder over the nature of men and women, we would realise that man is usually the party who seeks after the other one (and desires the woman). This is why the Islamic Law enjoined women to wear Hijab and not men. Had the Hijab been prescribed for both men and women, it would have constituted hardship and difficulty. Therefore, Islam eliminated this hardship by imposing it only on the party who needs it.

It is also noteworthy that this does not mean there are no guidelines or instructions in Islam on how men are to dress and behave. In one of the passages in the Qur'an which speaks about lowering the gaze and Hijab, God addresses the believing men before He addresses the believing women. Men must pay attention to their conduct and dress and take measures to safeguard themselves from evil.

You can find an interesting booklet on this topic entitled, 'A View Through the Hijab' by Khaula Nakata. It is the true story of a Japanese woman who embraced Islam and how she found the Hijab to be a means of devotion and connection with her Lord, and she highlights how this was a personal choice, not one imposed by anyone upon her. And other Muslim women have said similar things.

And God knows best in all matters.

Re: Why hijab only for women

    Hello Lissa,

From women perspective, as a former gaflah person (Muslimah that didn't practice Islam in the past) I can tell you the big difference. Mostly, we women don't understand how men's mind functions when it comes to sexuality. We, women, don't react the same way as men do. We have, at least a little bit of a romantic idea when we see attractive man, they don't. To them, it's pure lust. How many times a girl would try to explain something scientific, something serious whatever it was to another person (man), and he wouldn't listen at all, all his focus would be on her sexuality. This is for the most of the men. We, are not like that.

Also, men don't really care if you have big "frontal" area, or big "back area" or fat lips etc... however, at least 50% of women of the West spend so much money and time on their beauty and at least 50% of those on plastic surgery. I personally know several women who are naturally pretty but still did the surgery. When you cover your body you're free from that slavery - that's the real slavery to men.

When you cover yourself (hijab), you're finally being respected by men. And men, even if covered like us can be super attractive to us.

Ok, thank you for you're point of view, it is interesting. I am from the west, I don't agree with everything, but I do agree that we are slave of our image and also from men in somehow.

Re: Why hijab only for women

Islamic recognizes the fact that the bodies of two genders are very different and also the amount of skin you show affects each gender differently. With that said, men have hijab as well. Each gender has a hijab specific to their gender for obvious reasons.

There follows a summary of the rulings on dress for men.

1.The basic principle concerning everything that is worn is that it is halaal (permissible), except for that concerning which there is a text to state that it is haraam (impermissible), such as silk for males

2.It is not permissible to wear thin or see-through clothing that does not conceal the ‘awrah (area that must be covered - different for each gender).

3.It is haraam to imitate the disbelievers in their manner of dress, so it is not permissible to wear clothing that is unique to the disbelievers.

4.It is haraam for women to imitate men and men to imitate women in the way they dress

5.It is Sunnah for a Muslim to start with the right when dressing

6.It is Sunnah for the one who is putting on a new garment to thank Allaah and make du’aa (supplication).

7.It is Sunnah to pay attention to keeping one's clothes clean, without feeling arrogant or exaggerating about that.

8.It is mustahabb (recommended) to wear white clothes

9.It is haraam for the Muslim man to let any garment he wears hang down beneath his ankles (an action known as isbaal); the limit for any garment is the ankles.

10.It is haraam to wear garments of fame and vanity, which means a garment that stands out from others so that people will look at the wearer and he will become known for it.

Re: Why hijab only for women

First of all it is misunderstood by most of the people around that hijab is just for women. It isnt true at all. Hijab is something that keeps you away from doing sins. It is what i have understood. Quran tells us that hijab isnt just reserved for women only, even men have to put hijab on their eyes by lowering their gaze. It is clearly written in the holy Quran. If you have understood that hijab is just a covering women have to wear, you are mistaken my sister. In Islam, we men aren't allowed to look at the women while women have to cover all of their body so that no one dares to see them with bad intentions. In order for you to understand why hijab is important in Islam, I recommend you the following website where you can know more.

Re: Why hijab only for women

I wonder if Lissa is still around?

I've read with interest the posts and it's given me a balanced view from both sexes (albeit Muslims).

I'd like to share something relating to my own experience in this hitting 'home'...

I was brought up in a liberal Muslim society and studied abroad exposed and indulged in western culture.

After studies I came home. I worked, got married to a hot babe, had two children, she still remained a hot babe 20 years on, but our paths diverged and we ended up getting a fairly amicable divorce.

I married again to someone who was already wearing a hijab. My ex rarely ever wore one. Over the course of time in my second marriage, I came to realise one afternoon something I never felt in the previous marriage of 20 years and it was over a simple thing.

After a day out in public, my wife and I finally got back to our car to go home. Once on the way, she took off her hijab and frees her hair and shakes it loose.... It dawned on me then!

That was for my eyes only! (Of course I was watching the road ahead) and I felt truly special.

A very simple act, priceless to me, only truly appreciated because I have experienced a wife who didn't wear hijab.
