    was umar a mysoginist?

    Report bad ads?

    Salaam,

Some people say that hadhrat umar was a mysoginist, used to beat up his wives and treat women badly.

Im not sure if its trus but someone said to me that in a hadith it says that umar approached a woman to ask her hand in marriage and she refused, siting his bad treatment of his wives as the main reason. There are also other evidences in fatima mernissis 'The Veil and the Male Elite'

Please help me refute this claim,.

    salama

who cares what people say. if they dont have evidence then ignore them.

umar ibn khattab (ra) was the second best caliph after abu bakr and the second best sahaba. how can u believe these people who make something up about the sahabas. they even make things about the prophet (saw) so how can u take their word.

Those are nothing more than blatant lies made by people who arent half the man he was and they never will be. History doesnt produce men like Umar r.a. He was the door that protected this Ummah from Fitnah. The door broke when he died and it will not be put back until the Day of Judgement. The Quran was revealed to confirm his views many times such as the Verse of the Hijab, the Verses after Badr regarding the prisoners of war. He and Abu Bakr are the leaders of the People of Paradise. He is the second man to enter Jannah after the Anbiya. These people seek to make division in the religion and come out with these blatant lies. They are liars.

About the Hadith, perhaps brother Ansar or Fi will shed some light on it. The hadith exists, but the people who hate Umar r.a twist it and use it to acheive their own ends.

    Re: was umar a mysoginist?

'Umar radhiAllaahu anhu was a person who was rough in his lifestyle, and he was a zaahid (someone who isn't attatched to this world.) And because the women knew that he was like this, they were afraid that they would have to live this sort of lifestyle too - if they were to marry him.

So they backed away due to that.

Just think about it, does a woman want to live a poor life? No. She want's to feel secure and have a comfortable life. This just wasn't the personality of 'Umar radhiAllaahu anhu, because he preferred the afterlife over this world. And he was of the 10 promised paradise, he obeyed the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) who said:

The Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) said: "The best among you is the one who is best to his wife" (Related by Ibn Hibban) in another version it is the one who is most kind to his wife.

    Now look at this:

It is reported that a man came to 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab raa to complain about his wife's ill-temper. While he was waiting for 'Umar to come out of his house, he heard 'Umar's wife scolding him and 'Umar quietly listening to her, and not answering her back. The man turned around and started walking away, muttering to himself: "If that is the case with 'Umar, the leader of the believers, who is famous for his uprighteness and toughness, then what about poor me?!" At that moment, 'Umar came out of his house and saw the man walking away. He called him and said, "What is it you want of me, O man?" The man replied: "O leader of the believers, I came to complain to you about my wife's bad-temper and how she nags me. Then I heard your wife doing the same to you, so I turned around, muttering to myself, 'If that is the situation of the leader of the believers, then what about me?'" 'Umar replied, "O my brother, I bear with her because of her rights over me. She cooks my food, bakes my bread, washes my clothes, breast-feeds my child...and yet none of these are her duty;* and then she is a comfort to my heart and keeps me away from forbidden deeds. Consequently, I bear with her." The man said, "It is the same with me, O leader of the believers." 'Umar said: "Then, O my brother, be patient with her, indeed this life is short. (Adh-Dhahabi, Al-Kabâ'ir 194)

Ask bro Ansar for more details insha'Allaah.

    Re: was umar a mysoginist?

Jazak Allah khair for that bro Fi

I know exactly the kind of people who are using the claim mentioned in the 1st post. They are the people who claim to be Muslims and then deny the hadith altogether saying that the 4 Sahabah changed it over their life time to suit their purposes.

I encountered these people in different places and their claims are pretty much baseless since they rely on completely unconfirmed articles by various 'self proclaimed fake scholars'

I forget the name of the man who wrote a book against Umar(r), but he was awarded in the west and proclaimed as a 'reformer of Islam' - he is classified alongside Salman Rushdie by the west amongst writers.

Apart from that claim of his, he also argues against Jihad and proclaims it to be a barbaric practice. (so much for his knowledge on 'jihad' [struggle] lol)

I wish I could remember his name, but its been over a year since I encountered it.

So just a word of caution to all people - always do research on the author and you will be surprised what you may find!
