An Open Heart-to-heart Talk to the American Nation

By:Shaikh Ayedh Al-Garnee

I am approaching you as a member of this vast world community that we share, united in fate and humanity. We are destined as fellow humans to share joys and sorrows, content and discontent, and all notions of emotions throughout out our life time.

Our Lord Allah has told us that the Christians are the closest to us in faith: 5-82 “and you shall find the nearest in reverence to the believers (Muslims) those who say ‘we are Christians’, since amongst them are priests and monks, those who are not overcome by false pride.”

God has instructed us to call you to adhere to justice and true cause and a holy message from God: 3-64 “O people of the script (Jews and Christians) adhere with us to an oath not to worship but Allah, and not to associate partners with Him, and that we shall not resort to worshiping any other idols besides Allah.”

Islam commands to respect fellow humans and to have pity and mercy as we request of them in the most sensible means to worship Allah. Islam is a religion that forbids injustice, violation of properties, killing or deprivation of belongings without a just cause. Islam, in short, is a message that leads people away from worshiping fellow humans and idols, and guides them towards worshiping Allah, the Lord of them all. Islam guides people away from the path leading to hell, and onto the path leading to heaven. Islam leads away from the world of conflicts, conspiracies, fears and miseries, to the world of affection, security, peace and happiness.

We appreciate your industrial inventions and progress in science and technology. Nevertheless, we can not ratify your inequity and transcendence over other nations. Yet, we strongly regret the tragedy that devastated your nation on 11 September in New York and Washington because our religion forbids killing the noncombatant, the innocent women, the children, the old, and all those who have not declared war.

You may have mourned those who lost their lives in this one tragedy, we, however, have been mourning the millions who have been massacred for decades in Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, and so forth.

As you may have had to weep over the bereavement of some of your youngsters, we have witnessed the assassination of Mohamma Al-Dorra (9 years old), Eman Haju (an infant), and thousands of our children who have been shoot dead all over Palestine. As the American nation may have been grieved over the 9/11, we must not forget the greater tragedies of Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Somalia, Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Palestine, in which forbidden weapons were used—and we are sure that you are all well aware who has manufactured such tools intended for mass destruction. Our grieve has been for far longer and in many more folds.

America, we understand that you have been systematically been feed a distorted image of Islam. A Muslim in your media is not but a terrorist whose sole ambition in life is to kill civilians and blow up buildings. In reality, however, such an image is quite far from the truth. Islam in fact is a religion of peace and tranquility, mercy and honor, and a religion that put a stop to many old feuds and wars, slavery, social injustice, adultery, and many horrific abuses caused to fellow humans by others who though of themselves more superior. Islam came to establish equality, justice and to honor humanity and enforce the freedom of every human being.

Our Prophet Mohammad (may peace be upon him) told us how God forgave a woman of all past guilt for once watering a thirsty dog. Yet, in another incident, a woman was destined for hellfire for locking a cat indoors without food until it died. Hence, it seems evident that a religion that pities cats and dogs can never allow harming or killing innocent people, without permissible grounds.

Our ancestors, who carried the eternal message of Islam to the vast corners of the globe, were merciful and just. The renowned French historian/sociologist Gustav Lobone described them as: "The Arabs were the most just and merciful conquerors the world has ever known.”

O American nation!

We would like to ask you to spare a few minutes to viewing some original literature about Islam, most preferably written by reliable sources.

We would also like to ask you to avoid approving the policies of mass aggression against the innocent multitude of the Arab/Muslim nations in your declared generalized war against terrorism. Generalizing such acts of aggression is immoral, and could not be tolerated. Unjust mass acts of retaliations will often lead to counter acts of retaliation, in a vicious circle.

We truly hope that the terrible incidents of 9/11 have taught us all positive lessons. We sympathize with the whole American nation, and the families of the victims. We also hope that the sufferings endured would help you realize the effects of the degrading acts of injustice used against the victims of the so-loosely-defined terrorism.

We appreciate the few voices that have been just in this cause, and e hope that the whole American nation takes a firm stand in this matter. You need to apply your democracy and laws of justice in practice when dealing with other nations. It is justice and passion that build everlasting supremacy, not the use of the firepower. You have been blessed with an enormous arsenal of weaponry, but also tainted by war-minded politicians who have abused this power to horrify other nations.

We Muslims we believe in justice and mercy, even towards those who may have encroached upon us. Allah says in the holy Quraan 5-8: "O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allah as just witnesses; and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you evade justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety; and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do.”

Today we approach you in the name of humanity and bid you to worship the one God that we all believe in, and to accept our prophet Mohammad (may peace be upon him) as we accept and believe in your prophet Jesus (may peace be upon him). Come on to the world of peace, security and freedom. Let us abandon the world of fear, war, and tyranny.
