Hazrat Khaalid bin Sa‘eed bin ‘Aas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was among the first people to embrace Islam. He was either the fourth or fifth Sahaabi to accept Islam.
Before accepting Islam, he saw the following dream. He says:
I dreamt that I was standing at the edge of a broad and deep pit filled with fire. My, father, Sa‘eed, wanted to push me into the pit. Suddenly, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) appeared, held me by the waist and pulled me away. I awoke from the dream saying, “By Allah, this dream is true!” I then proceeded to Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and related the dream to him. Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “Allah Ta‘ala intends to bless you with goodness. This is the messenger of Allah. Follow him and embrace Islam. Insha Allah you will follow Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and embrace Islam, and it is your Islam that will save you from falling into the fire. However, it appears as though your father is falling into the fire.”
I then went to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and enquired, “O Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! What are you inviting us towards?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied:
أدعوك إلى الله وحده لا شريك له وأن محمدا عبده ورسوله تخلع ما كنت عليه من عبادة حجر لا يضر ولا ينفع ولا يدري من عبده ممن لم يعبده
“I am inviting you towards Allah who is alone and has no partner, and verily Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is His slave and messenger, and I invite you to forsake the worship of idols that neither have the ability to benefit nor harm nor do they even know who worships them or who desists from worshipping them.”
I then professed before Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), “I testify that Allah is alone and you are His true messenger.” In this manner, I embraced Islam.
Re: Hazrat Khaalid bin Sa‘eed bin ‘Aas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)
Hazrat Khaalid (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said:
When my father learnt that I had embraced Islam, he beat me so severely that my head was wounded. He broke a stick on my head and said, “You are following Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) who has opposed all the people! He speaks ill of our deities and depicts our forefathers as stupid and ignorant.” I responded, “By Allah! Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is absolutely true in what he is saying!”
My father was angered even further. He hurled abuse at me, swore at me and said, “You wretch! Get away from me! By Allah, I will cut off your food and drink!” I replied, “If you deprive me of food, Allah Ta‘ala will provide me with sustenance.” Upon this, my father expelled me from his house and said to his children, “Nobody should speak to him! Whoever speaks to him will receive the same treatment!”
Hazrat Khaalid (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) subsequently left his father’s door and came to the door of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) showed great honor to Hazrat Khaalid (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).
A man does not bring dishonor to himself by leaving the door of any person. However, if he has to leave the door of Allah and His Rasul (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then he won’t be able to find honor anywhere. Allah Ta‘ala declares, “And to Allah alone is honor, and (thereafter, honor is blessed from the side of Allah) to His Rasul (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know.”
From this verse, it is clear that honor lies in bringing Imaan whilst there is nothing but humiliation in disbelief. There is no possibility whatsoever of honor being found in disbelief.
Hazrat Khaalid (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) says:
Once, my father fell seriously ill. In his illness, he took a vow saying, “If Allah allows me to recover from this illness, I will not allow that deity to be worshipped in Makkah Mukarramah which Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) commands the people to worship.” I made du‘aa to Allah Ta‘ala saying, “O Allah! Since my father does not wish to accept Islam and is determined to oppose Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), do not allow him to recover from this illness.” As a result, my father died in this illness.
