Question How human came to existence? (According to Islam)

Just like the other two Abrahamic religions (Judaism & Christianity) Islam's basic foundational belief on the origin of man is that all mankind are descendants of Adam and Eve (peace be upon them), the first man and woman on earth. Adam (pbuh) was created in Heaven by Allah (God) from seven different kinds of earth, whilst Eve was created by Allah from one of Adam's ribs. Both Adam & Eve were evicted from Heaven and sent to earth when they were conned by Satan and disobeyed Allah's command by eating the forbidden fruit.

    Important Details.

All the hadith are from the book Sahih Bukhari,

Adam was the most beautiful human that ever existed, for Allah created him with his own "hands", so that means he perfected him and made him soo beautifull.

God did not create Adam pbuh in his own image... Quran 112:4 says;"And there is none like unto Him."

And God said to the angels:

"'Verily, I am going to place mankind generations after generations on earth.' They said: 'Will You place therein those who will make mischief therein and shed blood(like the demons that are there now?), while we glorify You with praises and thanks and sanctify You.' God said: 'I know that which you do not know.'"
    (Quran 2:30)

"And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: 'I am going to create a human (Adam) from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud. So when I have fashioned him and breathed into him (his) soul created by Me, then you fall down prostrate to him." (Quran 38:71-72)

[Quran 51:56] I did not create the jinns and the humans except to worship Me ALONE.

    Creation

    Volume 4, Book 55, Number 543:

    Narrated Abu Huraira:

    The Prophet pbuh said,

"Allah created Adam, making him 60 cubits (I think this is 30 meter) tall. When He created him, He said to him, "Go and greet that group of angels, and listen to their reply, for it will be your greeting (salutation) and the greeting (salutations of your offspring)." So, Adam said (to the angels), As-Salamu Alaikum (i.e. Peace be upon you). The angels said, "As-salamu Alaika wa Rahmatu-l-lahi" (i.e. Peace and Allah's Mercy be upon you). Thus the angels added to Adam's salutation the expression, 'Wa Rahmatu-l-lahi,' Any person who will enter Paradise will resemble Adam (in appearance and figure). People have been decreasing in stature since Adam's creation. Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "The best of days on which the sun has risen is Friday. One this day Adam was created, and on this day he was descended to earth." (al Bukhari)

    The making of Adam pbuh

Ibn Masud and other companions of the Prophet (PBUH) said that Allah the Almighty sent Gabriel onto the earth to said that Allah the Almighty sent Gabriel onto the earth to get Him clay therefrom. The earth said: "I seek refuge in Allah from your decreasing my quantity or disfiguring me." So Gabriel returned and did not take anything. He said: "My Lord, the land sought refuge in You and it granted." So Allah sent Michael for the same purpose, and the land sought refuge with Allah and it was granted. So he went back and said to Allah what Gabriel has said before him. Then Allah sent the Angel of Death, and the land sought refuge in Allah, the angel said: "I also seek refuge with Allah from returning without carrying out His command." So he took clay from the face of the earth and mixed it. He did not take from one particular place, but rather he took white, red, and black clay from different places.

The Angel of Death ascended with it, Allah soaked the clay till it became sticky. Then Allah said to the angels: "Truly, I am going to create man from clay. So when I have fashioned him and breathed into him (his) soul created by Me, then you fall down prostrate to him." (Chapter 38:71-72 Quran).

So Allah shaped Adam into a human being, but he remained a figure of clay for 40 years. The angels went past him. They were seized with fear by what they saw, and Iblis felt fear most. He used to pass by the figure of Adam, buffeting it, which would make a sound like pottery. Allah told us: "He created man (Adam) from sounding clay like the clay of pottery." ( 55:Quran). Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "Allah created Adam from dust after He mixed the clay and left him for some time until it became sticky mud, after which Allah shaped him. After that Allah left him till it became like potter's clay. Iblis used to go past him saying 'You have been created for a great purpose.'

When the time drew near to breathe the spirit into Adam, as Allah decreed, He commanded the angels: "When I breathe My spirit into him prostrate before him." Allah breathed His spirit into Adam and when it reached his head Adam sneezed. The angels said: "Say all praise belongs to Allah." Adam repeated: "All praise belongs to Allah." Allah said to him: "Your Lord has granted you mercy." When the spirit reached his eyes, Adam looked at the fruits of Paradise. When it reached his abdomen Adam felt an appetite for food. He jumped hurriedly before the spirit could reach his legs, so that he could eat from the fruits of Paradise. Allah, therefore, said: "Man is created of haste." ( 21:37 Quran). And then: The angels prostrated themselves all of them together. Except Iblis, he refused to be among the prostrators. ( 15:31-32 Quran).

    The prostration for Adam pbuh

Adam opened his eyes and saw all the angels prostrating before him except one being who was standing at a distance Adam did not know what kind of creature it was that did not prostrate before him nor did he know its name. Iblis was standing with the angels so as to be included in the command given to them but he was not one of them. He was a jinn(demons), and as such he was supposed to be inferior to the angels. What is clear is that this prostration was to show respect and did not mean that the angels were worshipping Adam. Prostrating in worship is done only for ALLAH.

Iblis tried in vain to justify his refusal: "Shall I prostrate to one whom You created from clay?" Iblis said: "See? those whom You have honored above me, if You give me respite (keep me alive) to the Day of Resurrection, I will surely seize and mislead his offspring (by sending them astray) all but a few!" (17:62 Quran).

Adam was following what was happening around him and had feelings of love, awe, and astonishment. Deep love of Allah,Who had created and glorified him and Who had made His angels prostrate before him. Awe of the Creator's wrath when He excluded Iblis from His mercy. Adam was surprised by this creature, Iblis who abhorred without even knowing him and who imagined himself better than Adam without having proved that he was worthier. What a strange creature Iblis was, and how strange was his excuse for not prostrating!

From the dialogue Adam realized that Iblis was a creature characterized by cunning and ingratitude. He then knew that Iblis was his eternal enemy. He was greatly astonished at Iblis's audacity and Allah's tolerance.

Immediately after his creation Adam witnessed the large amount of freedom that Allah gives to His commissioned creatures.

Allah knew that Iblis was not going to obey Him in prostrating before Adam. Allah could have totally annihilated him or turned him into a handful of dust or stifled the refusal in his mouth. Yet, Allah gives His commissioned creatures absolute freedom even to the extent that they can refuse Allah the Almighty's commands. He grants them the freedom of denial, disobedience, and even disagreement with Him.

There were many traditions about Iblis at the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Ibn Masud, Ibn Abbas and a group of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that Iblis had been the head of the angels in the worldly heavens. Ibn Abbas said in one narration that his name had been Azazil and in another narration he said it had been Al Harith. Ibn Abbas also said that Iblis was a jinn and that they had once been the keepers of Paradise, with Iblis the most honorable and the most learned and the most pious of them. Another tradition says that he had been one of the famous four possessors of wings (angels), before Allah transformed him into the accursed Satan.

After this lesson about freedom Adam learned another lesson, one about knowledge. Adam realized that Iblis was the symbol of evil in the universe and that the angels were the symbol of good. However he did not yet know anything about himself. Then Allah made him perceive his true identity and the reason for his creation, and the secret of his glorification.
Allah the Exalted said: He taught Adam all the names of everything. (2:31 Quran).

Almighty Allah granted Adam the power to know the natures of all things and to summarize them by names; that is a bird, that is a star, that is a tree, etc Allah implanted in Adam an insatiable need for and love of knowledge and a desire to bequeath knowledge to his children. This was the reason for his creation and the secret of his glorification.

After Adam had learned the names of all things, along with their properties and uses, Allah presented them to the angels and said: "Tell Me the names of these if you are truthful." (2:31 Quran) the angels admitted their inability: "Glory be to You, we have knowledge except what You have taught us. Verily it is You the All Knower, the All Wise." ( 2:32)

Allah Almighty then turned to Adam: "O Adam! Inform them of their names, " and when he had informed them of their names, He said: "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen in the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you have been hiding?" (2:33 Quran).

Allah wanted the angels to know that He knew of their astonishment when He had told them about the creation of Adam and that He also knew of their confusion which they had not revealed, as well as what Iblis had concealed of his disobedience and ingratitude.

    The creation of the woman

Adam knew the names of everything. Sometimes he talked to the angels, but they were preoccupied with worshipping Almighty Allah. Therefore Adam, felt lonely. One day he slept and when he awoke he found near his head, a woman gazing at his face with beautiful tender eyes.

Ibn Abbas and a group of companions of the Prophet (PBUH) narrated that when Iblis was sent out of Paradise and Adam was accommodated therein, Adam was alone in Paradise and did not have a partner from whom he could get tranquility. He slept for some time and when he woke up, he saw a woman whom Allah had created from his ribs. So he asked her, "Who are you? She replied, "A woman" He asked: "Why have you been created?" She said :"So that you could find tranquility in me." The angels, trying to find out the extent of his knowledge, asked him: "What is her name O Adam?" He replied, "Eve" They asked "Why was she so named?" He replied, " Because she was created from something living."

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "O Muslims! I advise you to be gentle with women, for they are created from a rib, and the most crooked portion of the rib is its upper part. If you try to straighten it, it will break and if you leave it, it will remain crooked, so I urge you to take care of the women." (Sahih Bukhari).

    Paradise

Adam and eve were admitted to Paradise and there they lived the dream of all human beings. Allah permitted them to approach and enjoy everything except one tree, that might have been the Tree of Pain or the Tree of Knowledge. Allah forbade them they were give abode in Paradise. "But come not near this tree or you both will be of the wrong doers." (2:35)
Allah commanded Adam to dwell in Paradise: "O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in the Paradise and eat both of you freely with pleasure and delight of things therein as wherever you will, but come not near this tree or you both will be of the Zalimeen (wrong doers).(2:35)

The location of this Paradise is unknown to us. The Quran did not reveal it, and the commentators had five different opinions. Some said that it was the paradise of our refuge and that its place was heaven. Others regretted that statement because if it was the paradise of refuge Iblis would have been forbidden admission and disobedience would have been forbidden as well. Still others said that it was another paradise that was created by Allah for Adam and Eve. A fourth group said it was a paradise on the earth located in a high place. Another group of commentators accept what was in the Quran without questioning where this paradise was located. We agree with this last opinion as the lesson we learn from its location is immaterial compared to the lesson we leafrom the events that took place there.

    The tree and the fruit

Adam and eve were admitted to Paradise and there they lived the dream of all human beings. Allah permitted them to approach and enjoy everything except one tree, that might have been the Tree of Pain or the Tree of Knowledge. Allah forbade them they were give abode in Paradise. "But come not near this tree or you both will be of the wrong doers." (2:35)

Adam and Eve understood that they were forbidden to eat the fruit of that tree. Adam was however a human being and man tends to forget. His heart changes and his will weakens. Iblis summoned all the envy within him and took advantage of Adam's humanity to exploit him. He started to whisper to him day after day, coaxing him: "Shall I guide you to the Tree of Immortality and the Eternal Kingdom?" He said to them: "Your Lord did not forbid you this tree save you should become angels or become of the immortals." He (Satan) swore by Allah to them both saying: "Verily I am one of the sincere well wishers for you both." (7:20-21)

Adam asked himself: "What will happen if I eat from this tree? It might truly be the Tree of Immortality." His dream was to live forever in the pure innocence of Paradise."

Years went by, and Adam and Eve were preoccupied with thoughts of that tree. Then one day they decided to eat of its fruit. They forgot that Allah had warned them not to approach it and that Iblis was their sworn enemy. Adam stretched out his hand, picked one of the fruits and offered it to Eve. They both ate of the forbidden tree.

Allah Almighty told us: "So he (Satan) misled them with deception." (Ch 7:22) Allah said: "Thus did Adam disobey his Lord so he went astray." (20:121).

Adam had hardly finished eating when he felt his heart contract, and he as filled with pain, sadness and shame. The surrounding atmosphere had changed and the internal music had stopped. He discovered that he and his wife were naked, so they both started cutting tree leaves with which to cover themselves.

Allah the Almighty addressed him: "Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you: Verily Satan is an open enemy unto you?" They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers." Allah said; "Get down, one of you an enemy to the other (Adam, Eve, and Satan etc). On earth will be a dwelling place for you and an enjoyment, for a time." He said: "Therein you shall live and therein you shall die, and from it you shall be brought out (resurrected)." (7:22-25).

O Children of Adam! Let not Satan deceive you, as he got your parents (Adam and Eve) out of Paradise stripping them of their rainments; to show them their private parts. Verily he and Qabiluhu (his soldiers from the jinn or his tribe) see you from where you cannot see them. .. (Ch 7:27)

Al Hafez Ibn Asaker narrated that Allah commanded two angels to remove Adam from His holy proximity. So Gabriel stripped him of the crown on his head, and Michael took the diadem from his forehead. So Adam walked (or run) away, and on his way a tree catched him by his forehead. So Allah asked: "are you running away from me?" Adam thought that his punishment had been hastened and bowed down crying; "Forgiveness! Forgiveness!" so Allah asked: "Are you running away from Me?" Adam replied, "No, my Lord, but I am shy of You (because of what I did)."

    to the Earth

They left Paradise and descended upon the earth. Adam was sad and Eve was crying. Allah accepted their repentance because it was sincere and He told them that the earth would be their realm and origin where they would live and die and whence they would come on the Day of Judgment.
Adam knew he bade farewell to peace and he left Paradise. On earth he had to face conflict and struggle. No sooner had one ended than another began. He also had to toil to sustain himself. He had to protect himself with clothes and weapons and protect his wife and children from the wild beasts. Above all he had to struggle with the spirit of evil. Satan, the cause of his expulsion from Paradise, continued to beguile him and his children in an effort to have them thrown into the eternal hellfire. The battle between good and evil is continuous, but those who follow Allah's guidance and should fear nothing while those who disobey Allah and follow Iblis will be da nmed along with him.

Adam grasped all of this and with the knowledge of this suffering he started his life on the earth. The only thing that allowed his grief was that he was master of the earth and had to make it yield to him. He was the one who had to perpetuate, cultivate and construct and populate the earth. He was also the one who had to procreate and raise children who would change and improve the world.

Adam understood his 3rd lesson. He knew now in a practical way that Iblis was his enemy, the cause of his losing the blessing of living in Paradise, and the cause of his distress. Adam also understood that Allah punishes disobedience and that the way of Paradise has to be through submission to the will of Allah. And he learned from Allah Almighty to ask for forgiveness.
Allah accepted Adam's repentance and forgave him. He then sent him to the earth as His first messenger.

Allah the Almighty recounted this third lesson Adam learned in Paradise: Indeed We made a covenant with Adam before, but he forgot, and We found on his part no firm will power. Remember when We said to the angels "Prostrate yourselves to Adam." They prostrated (all) except Iblis, who refused. then We said: "O Adam! verily, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. so let him not get you both out of Paradise, so that you be distressed in misery. Verily, you have (a promise from Us) that you will never be hungry therein nor naked. And you will suffer not from thrist therein nor from the sun's heat."

then Satan whispered to him, saying "O Adam! Shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that will never waste away?" Then they both ate of that tree, and so their private parts appeared to them, and they began to stick on themselves the leaves from Paradise for their covering. Thus did Adam disobey his Lord, so he went astray. Then his Lord chose him, and turned to him with forgiveness and gave him guidance.

Allah said: "Get you down (upon the earth), both of you, together from Paradise, some of you are an enemy to some others. THen if there comes to you guidance from Me, then whoever follows My Guidance shall neither go astray, nor fall into distress and misery. But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (neither believes in this Quran nor acts on its orders etc). Verily, for him is a life of hardship and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection."

He will say: "O my Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, while I had sight before." Allah will said: "like this, Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc). came unto you, but you disregarded them (you left them, did not think deeply in them, and you turned away from them), and so this Day, you will be neglected in the Hellfire, away from Allah's Mercy.)"

And thus do We requite him who transgresses beyond bounds (commits the great sins and disobeys his Lord (allah) and believes not in His Messengers, and His revealed Books, and believes not in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc). of his Lord, and the torment of the Hereafter is far more severe and more lasting. ( 20:115-127)

    Adam and hawa's(Eve) first childeren

The pinnacle of earthly bliss was reached when Adam and Eve witnessed the birth of their 1st children, a set of twins. Adam was a devoted father and Eve a contented mother. The twins were Cain (Qabil) and his sister. Later Eve gave birth to a second set of twins, Abel (Habil) and his sister. The family enjoyed the bounties and fruits of the earth provided by their Lord. The children grew up to be strong and healthy young adults. Cain tilled the land while Abel raised cattle.

The time arrived when the two young men desired life partners. This was part of Allah's plan for mankind, to multiply and form nations with different cultures and colors. Allah revealed to Adam that he should marry each son to the twin sister of the other. Adam instructed his children according to Allah's command, but Cain was displeased with the partner chosen for him, for Abel's twin sister was not as beautiful as his own.

    Adam, Cain and Abel

It appears that since the beginning of time, physical beauty has been a factor in the attraction between man and women. This attraction caused Cain to envy his brother Abel. He rebelled against Allah's command by refusing to accept his father's advice.

Adam was in a dilemma. He wanted peace and harmony in his family, so he invoked Allah for help. Allah commanded that each son offer a sacrifice, and he whose offering was accepted would have right on his side. Abel offered his best camel while Cain offered his worst grain. His sacrifice was not accepted by Allah because of his disobedience to his father and the insincerity in his offering.

This enraged Cain even further. Realizing that his hopes marrying his own beautiful sister were fading, he threatened his brother. "I will kill you! I refuse to see you happy while I remain unhappy!"

Abel feeling sorry for his brother, replied, "It would be more proper for you, my brother to search for the cause of your unhappiness and then walk in the way of peace. Allah accepts the deeds only from those who serve and fear Him, not from those who reject His Commands."

Abel was intelligent, obedient, and always ready to obey the will of Allah. This contrasted sharply with his brother who was arrogant, selfish and disobedient to his Lord. Abel did not fear his brother's threats, but neither did he want his brother to be hurt, Allah had blessed Abel with purity and compassion.

Hoping to allay the hatred seething in his brother Abel said, " My brother, you are deviating from the right path and are sinful in your decisions. It is better that you repent to Allah and forget about your foolish threat. But if you do not then I will leave the matter in the hands of Allah. You alone will bear the consequence of your sin, for the Fire is the reward of the wrong-doers."

This brotherly plea did nothing to lessen the hatred in Cain's heart, nor did he show fear of Allah's punishment. Even familial considerations were cast aside. Cain struck his brother with a stone killing him instantly. This was the 1st death and the 1st criminal act committed by man on earth.

When Abel had not appeared for some time, Adam began to search for him but found no trace of his beloved son. He asked Cain about Abel's whereabouts. Cain insolently replied that he was not his brother's keeper nor his protector. From these words his father understood that Abel was dead and Adam was filled with grief.

Meanwhile Cain did not know what to do with his brother's corpse. He carried it on his back wandering from place to place trying to hide it. His anger had now subsided and his conscience was saddled with guilt. He was tiring under the burden of the corpse which had started to have a stench. As a mercy, and to show that dignity could be retained even in death, Allah sent two ravens that began fighting, causing the death of one. The victorious bird used its beak and claws to dig a hole in the ground, rolled its victim into it and covered it with sand.

Witnessing this, Cain was overcome with shame and remorse. "Woe unto me!" he exclaimed. "I was unable to do what this raven has done, that is to hide my brother's corpse." Cain then buried his brother. This was also the 1st burial of man.

Allah the Almighty revealed: And (O Muhammad) recite to them the story of the two sons of Adam (Abel and Cain) in truth; when each offered a sacrifice to Allah, it was accepted from the one but not from the other. The latter said to the former; "I will surely kill you." the former said: "Verily Allah accepts only from those who are Al Muttaqeen (the pious). If you do stretch your hand against me to kill me I shall never stretch my hand against you to kill you, for I fear Allah; the Lord of the Alameen (mankind, jinn, and all that exists). Verily I intend to let you draw my sin onyourself as well as yours then you will be one of the dwellers of the Fire, and that is the recompense of the Zalimeen (polytheists, and wrongdoers)." So the self of the other (latter one) encouraged him and made fair seeming to him the murder of his brother; he murdered him and became one of the losers. Allah sent a crow who scratched the ground to show him to hide the dead body of his brother. He (the murderer) said: "Woe to me! Am I not even able to be as this crow and to hide the dead body of my brother?" Then he became one of those who regretted. ( 5:27-31).

According to Abu Ja'afar al Baqer, Adam was watching their offering and was sure that Abel's sacrifice would be accepted. Cain complained to Adam that the acceptance was due to his supplication for Abel and that he had not done the same for him, so he promised his father to settle the matter between himself and his brother. One night, Abel was late returning from tending his flock. Adam sent Cain to see what happened to him. When he found him, he glared at him saying: "yours was accepted, and mine was not." Abel replied, "Allah only accepts from the Allah-fearing." Cain became angry on hearing this and hit him with a piece of iron that was with him and thus killing him. In another version it was said that he killed him with a rock to the head while he was sleeping.

Adam was utterly grief stricken by the loss of his two sons. One was dead, the other was won over by the devil. Adam prayed for his son and turned to mundane matters for he had to toil for his sustenance. At the same time he was a prophet advising his children and grandchildren, telling them about Allah and calling them to believe in Him. He told them about Iblis and warned them by recounting his own experience with the devil and of how the devil had tempted Cain to kill his brother.

    Adam's (pbuh) Dead

Abdullah Ibn Al Iman Ahmad Ibn Hanbal narrated that Ubai Ibn Kab said: "When Adam's death was near, he said to his children: "O my children, indeed I feel an appetite for the fruits of Paradise."

So they went away searching for what Adam had requested. They met with the angels, who had with them his shroud and what he was to be embalmed with. They said to them: "O Children of Adam, what are you searching for? What do you want? Where are you going?"

They said: "Our father is sick and has an appetite for the fruits of Paradise." the angels said to them: "Go back, for your father is going to meet his end soon."

So they returned (with the angels) and when Eve saw them she recognized them. She tried to hide herself behind Adam. He said to her. "Leave me alone. I came before you; do not go between me and the angels of my Lord.' So they took his soul, embalmed and wrapped him, dug the grave and laid him in it. They prayed on him and put him in his grave, saying: 'O Children of Adam, this is your tradition at the time of death.""

Before his death Adam reassured his children that Allah would not leave man alone on the earth, but would sent His prophets to guide them. the prophets would have different names, traits and miracles, but they would be united in one thing; the call to worship Allah alone. This was Adam's bequest to his children. Adam finished speaking and closed his eyes. Then the angels entered his room and surrounded him. When he recognized the Angel of Death among them, his heart smiled peacefully.

After Adam's death, his soth Seth (Shiith) took over the responsibilities of prophethood, according to a hadith narrated by Abu Dhar. Abu Dhar narrated that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: "Allah sent down one hundred and four psalms, of which fifty were sent down to Seth." (Sahih al Bukhari) When the time of his death came Seth's son Anoush succeeded him. He in turn, was succeeded by his son Qinan, claim that Mahlabeel was the King of the Seven Regions, that he was the first one to cut down trees to build cities and large forts and that he built the cities of Babylonia. He reigned for a period of forty years. When he died his duties were taken ov er by his son Yard, who on his death, bequeathed them to his son Khonoukh, who is Idris (pbuh) according to the majority of the scholars.

Adam and the Day of resurection

    The Prophet said,

"The first man to be called on the Day of Resurrection will be Adam who will be shown his offspring, and it will be said to them, 'This is your father, Adam.' Adam will say (responding to the call of Allah), 'Labbaik and Sa'daik (I respond to Your Calls, I am obedient to Your orders), wal Khair fi Yadaik (and all the good is in Your Hands)!' Then Allah will say (to Adam), 'Take out of your offspring, the people of Hell.' Adam will say, 'O Lord, how many should I take out?' Allah will say, 'Out of every thousand (take out) nine-hundred and ninety-nine (persons).' At that time children will become hoary-headed and every pregnant female will drop her load (have an abortion) and you will see the people as if they were drunk, yet not drunk; But Allah's punishment will be very severe." That news distressed the companions of the Prophet too much, and they said, "O Allah's Apostle! Who amongst us will be that man (the lucky one out of one-thousand who will be saved from the Fire)?" He said, "Have the good news that one-thousand will be from Gog and Magog, and the one (to be saved will be) from you." He added:"You Muslims (compared to the large number of other people/nations) will be like a black hair on the side of a white ox, or a white hair on the side of a black ox, and I hope that you will be one-fourth of the people of Paradise." On that, we glorified and praised Allah and said, "Allahu-Akbar!" Then he said, "I hope that you will be one-third of the people of Paradise." We again said, "Allahu-Akbar!" Then he said, "(I hope that you will be) one-half of the people of Paradise." So we said, Allahu Akbar."

    Volume 9, Book 93, Number 607:

    Narrated Anas:

Allah's Apostle said, "The believers will be assembled on the Day of Resurrection and they will say, 'Let us look for someone to intercede for us with our Lord so that He may relieve us from this place of ours.' So they will go to Adam and say, 'You are Adam, the father of mankind, and Allah created you with His Own Hands and ordered the Angels to prostrate before you, and He taught you the names of all things; so please intercede for us with our Lord so that He may relieve us.' Adam will say, to them, 'I am not fit for that,' and then he will mention to them his mistake which he has committed.' "

    Some extra information / explanation

== Some people believe that the reason why mankind does not dwell in Paradise is that Adam was disobedient and that if it had not been for this sin, we could have been there all along. These are naive fictions because when Allah wanted to create Adam, He said to the angels, "I shall make a vicegerent on the earth." He did not say, "I shall make a vicegerent in Paradise." ==

== Adam's descent on earth, then, was not due to degradation but rather it was dignified descent. Allah knew that Adam and Eve would eat of the tree and descend to earth. He knew that Satan would rape their innocence. That experience was essential for their life on earth; it was a cornerstone of their vicegerency. It was meant to teach Adam, Eve, and their progeny that it was Satan who had caused them to be expelled from Paradise and that the road to Paradise can only be reached by obedience to Allah and enmity to Satan. ==

== Umar Ibn Al Khattab also narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: "Moses (PBUH) said: 'My Lord! May I see Adam who removed us and himself from the Paradise?" so Allah made him see Adam and he said to him: "Are you Adam?" Adam said: "yes." And he said "Were you the one in Whom Allah breathed His spirit and before whom He bowed His angels and to whom He taught the names of all things?" Adam answered: "yes." so Moses said: "What made you remove us and yourself from Paradise.?" ==

== Adam said: "Who are you?" Moses said: I am Moses." Adam said: "So you are Moses the prophet of the Children of Israel. Were you the one Allah spoke to directly?" Moses answered "yes." Adam said: "Why do you blame me for a matter which Allah had predestined?" So Allah's Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said twice. "Adam outclassed Moses." (Sahih al Bukhari). ==

== Could it be said that Adam and the rest of mankind were predestined to sin and to be expelled from Paradise and sent to the earth? In fact, this fiction is as naive as the first one. ==
== Adam complete free will, and he bore the consequences of his deed. He disobeyed by eating of the forbidden tree, so Allah dismissed him from Paradise. His disobedience does not negate his freedom. On the contrary it is a consequence of it. ==

    Volume 8, Book 77, Number 611:

    Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "Adam and Moses argued with each other. Moses said to Adam. 'O Adam! You are our father who disappointed us and turned us out of Paradise.' Then Adam said to him, 'O Moses! Allah favored you with His talk (talked to you directly) and He wrote (the Torah) for you with His Own Hand. Do you blame me for action which Allah had written in my fate before my creation?' So Adam confuted Moses, Adam confuted Moses," the Prophet added, repeating the Statement three times

The Quran’s Superiority over the Bible on the story of Adam and Eve’s Sin

    By Sami Zaatari

Both the Noble Quran and the Bible contain the story of Adam and Eve’s great downfall, when they ate of the tree after being tempted by satan. However so, when one reads both stories, the one in the Noble Quran, and the one found in the Bible one will not fail in noticing the Quran’s vastly superior portrayal of what happened.

In this article, I shall post both stores, the one found in the Bible, and the one found in the Noble Quran.

Let us first show the story as mentioned in the Bible:

8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. 10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. 11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. 13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. 14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates. 15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. 19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. 20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. 8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. 11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. 17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; 19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. (Genesis 2: 1-25, 3:1-23)

This is how the Bible mentions Adam and Eve’s downfall. However so, there are several problems with this story. Let us discuss each one one by one.

1- All blame is laid upon Eve

As one reads the story, one will not fail to notice that the downfall was all due to Eve being tempted by the serpent. We see that the serpent manages to fool Eve, which in turn results in Eve fooling Adam, all blame squarely going back to Eve, since it was her who fell at the serpents temptation, and it was her who tempted Adam.

Also note, when God finds out about this sin, Adam blames Eve saying it was her fault, that she made him eat the tree. Even later on God tells Adam BECAUSE YOU HAVE LISTENED TO YOUR WIFE, this completely puts the blame on Eve for their sins.

So this is the first problem with the story, all the blame goes on Eve, Adam seems to just be a victim of Eve!

    2- God’s bad advice

Another problem we see from the story is that God doesn’t really give Adam and Eve very good advice, in fact the advice he gives them makes things worst, note what he tells them:

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Note, all God tells Adam is to not eat from the tree, he is free to roam the Garden as much as wants, even pass along this forbidden tree, yet the only advice he is given is to not eat from it, better advice would have been to not just eat from the tree, but to not APPROACH it either to eliminate all temptations since humans are too weak by nature even if they know the Truth; something God fails to do here.

3- God is portrayed as a weak person

One big problem with the story in the Bible is that it shows God to be weak, and incapable of looking after his own people, who are just 2 human beings being Adam and Eve!

This incident here portrays God as being very weak, note he has to call out for Adam to find him, what kind of message does this send to God’s creation? Not a very good message if you ask me.

For a fourth problem, visit this other article of mine:

    http://www.answering-christianity.co...which_tree.htm

Let us now turn our attention to the Noble Quran’s version of how things really happened, and without a doubt, the Quran gets the story straight:

    From Surah Al-Araf:

"O Adam! dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden, and enjoy (its good things) as ye wish: but approach not this tree, or ye run into harm and transgression." Then began Satan to whisper suggestions to them, bringing openly before their minds all their shame that was hidden from them (before): he said: "Your Lord only forbade you this tree, lest ye should become angels or such beings as live for ever." And he swore to them both, that he was their sincere adviser. So by deceit he brought about their fall: when they tasted of the tree, their shame became manifest to them, and they began to sew together the leaves of the garden over their bodies. And their Lord called unto them: "Did I not forbid you that tree, and tell you that Satan was an avowed enemy unto you?" They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged our own souls: If thou forgive us not and bestow not upon us Thy Mercy, we shall certainly be lost." (Allah) said: "Get ye down. With enmity between yourselves. On earth will be your dwelling-place and your means of livelihood,- for a time." (7:19-24)

A mere simple 6 verses from the Noble Quran completely supersedes the Biblical version of the same story which took two chapters to cover! This alone shows how superior the Quran is to the Bible, the Quran does not to write 2 or 10 chapters on one incident, but can discuss a major story in a couple of verses and can completely put the former version to shame.

As we see, the Quranic version of Adam and Eve’s downfall completely corrects the Biblical mistakes to the true events of what really happened. Let us see how the Quran correctly corrects the Bible and getting the story right:

    1- Allah’s better advice

We see in the Noble Quran that Allah gives Adam and Eve the correct and better advice, which is to not APPROACH the tree. This is far better than simply allowing Adam and Eve to roam around freely with the tree in their midst with the simply advice of not eating from the tree. The better advice is to tell someone to avoid something bad, and not approach it, exactly as the Quran tells us.

2- BOTH Adam and Eve are EQUALLY guilty

Unlike the Bible where all the blame is mainly put on Eve, here we see that both Adam and Eve were deceived, and that they both together ate from the tree, not Eve alone being deceived and then deceiving Adam to join in her sin. No, satan went to them both and deceived them both into eating from the tree, and they were both equally guilty.

3- God is not portrayed as being weak

In the Quranic account we don’t see Allah being weak, roaming around trying to find a hiding Adam like a game of hide and seek. Allah is immidietly aware of both Adam and Eve’s sin as they commit it:

So by deceit he brought about their fall: when they tasted of the tree, their shame became manifest to them, and they began to sew together the leaves of the garden over their bodies. And their Lord called unto them: "Did I not forbid you that tree, and tell you that Satan was an avowed enemy unto you?"

Notice the second they eat from the tree, and realize that they are naked and try to clothe themselves, God immediately calls out telling them of their sin, unlike the Bible where he is walking around looking around trying to find Adam!

    CONCLUSION

We have clearly seen that the Quran’s version is vastly superior to the Bible’s wrong version of how things really happened, no one can deny this unless they are simply biased, but that is their choice, the facts speak for themselves.

What I also still find amazing is that it took the Quran a mere 6 verses to discuss such a major story unlike the Bible.

We must thank Allah for sending down the Quran, for it has opened our eyes and showed us how things really did happen, correcting the Bible’s errors and bad mis-information. Praise Allah! AMEEN!

Very interesting. I've always found the story of Adam of Eve one of the greatest, and perhaps one of the most famous pieces of human literature ever concieved.

    Greetings and peace be with you Shahreaz;

Adam was alone in Paradise and did not have a partner from whom he could get tranquility. He slept for some time and when he woke up, he saw a woman whom Allah had created from his ribs. So he asked her, "Who are you? She replied, "A woman" He asked: "Why have you been created?" She said :"So that you could find tranquility in me."
Thanks for sharing, just one small thing, how does this work today?

In the spirit of searching for a tranquil wife.

    Peace Eric,

Good question and thank you for bringing it up.

It is a very paradoxical Statement. "So that you could find tranquility in me."

I accept it as being true, yet in all of recorded history there has been no more than a few fleeting moments of world-wide tranquility. Which made me wonder if I was understanding it properly.

Now what I see is it applies to each of us as individuals.

From personal experience, during the times I was alone, I felt an inner turmoil and sense of being incomplete. The only thing I have found that soothes this turmoil and brings about a feeling of completion is when I am blessed with having a loving wife. Perhaps, this soothing and completion is what the tranquility refers to.

How did Iblis know there would offspring? (there was no Eve (pbuh) at that time).
How did he know there would be a day of ressurection? ie. at that point Adam (pbuh) was to live in heaven where there was no death.

Please explain why "And there is none like unto Him." must therefore equal "God did not create Adam pbuh in his own image." I don't see how the one necessarily follows from the other.

    Peace Grace Seeker,

I might be dyslexic. I tend to look at things from the converse and see how that would change the original premise.

Let us look at this from the opposite and see what happens.

Begin with the opposite and say "God(swt) created Adam(PBUH) in his own image."

It seems that would mean Adam(PBUH) would have some godlike attributes, features, characteristics. That would mean that in some ways Adam(PBUH) was similar to God(swt) making the statement "there is none like unto Him" wrong.

So if we agree "there is none like unto Him" is a true statement, we can not say "God(swt) created Adam(PBUH) in his own image."

I get what you are saying, but you won't be surprised that I have a slightly different take on the matter that causes me to approach it another way.

Now, if to be created in the image of God meant that one was exactly like God I would agree with what you said above completely.

But, what if it only means more like what we say when we say that a child is the "spittin' image" of a parent? Even using the phrase "spittin' image" to imply just alike, doesn't really mean that they are just alike. Few people who actually know the individuals would have trouble telling them apart. And I don't just mean the ages either. I'm told by many people how I am the image of my father. We even have the same name, profession, and many other traits. But though you and I have never met face-to-face, if I was to send you a picture of both me and my father at the same age, you too would see the resemblance, but not say that we are the same.

So, being created in the image doesn't have to mean identical to God or that one is just like God. God can still be God and we are still the creation, even if we are created in his image.

Now, maybe that is not enough for you. Maybe saying that there is none like him leads you to the opinion that there can't be anything in us that is like God. I sort of get that idea from your statement: "It seems that would mean Adam(PBUH) would have some godlike attributes, features, characteristics." And so you reject the idea.

But take a look again. Doesn't Adam indeed have some godlike attributes, features and characteristics that you already recognize?

Is there no justice, mercy, compasion, intelligence, decision making ability, knowing, or any of Allah's other attributes in Adam? Of course there are. And they are in each one of us as well. In fact, if we didn't possess them to some degree we wouldn't be able to recognize them in their more perfect form in Allah.

A person who has no concept of justice won't recognize either justice or injustice when he encounters it. Likewise a person who never feels compassion cannot show compassion. And so on with each of Allah's attributes. They are, to a lesser extent, a part of how Allah made us, and in many ways unique to humanity, because while we are not like Allah in terms of his perfection or majesty we are created enough in his image to be able to understand and appreciate his wonderful and all encompassing attributes.

I see what you are trying to say here, but would disagree that Adam (peace be upon him) or his children have some God-like qualities, attributes, features or characteristics. For example, the attributes of seeing and hearing are human attributes, but when they are attributed to Allah, they are without comparison in their perfection. Hence "And there is none like unto Him." Because when these attributes of seeing and hearing etc are associated with men, they necessitate ear and eye apparatuses which cannot be attributed to Allah. Similarly with justice and compassion too. They can never be like the justice and compassion of Allah, not even remotely like it. So we, as Muslims, would never say that we had any God-like qualities. What humans know about their Creator is only what little He has revealed to them through His prophets. Therefore, as Muslims, we are obliged to stay within these narrow limits when talking about/describing Allah.

    Peace.

I think Allah would have told him as he was really pious before the rebellion. Of course he would know that there would be a day of resurrection because Allah would have told him as he was a leader of the jinn.

    Peace Gene,

Another one of those areas where we will probably understand each other reasons, but not agree upon them.

While we are unique in humanity, we have no Godlike attributes even our concepts of mercy can not be thought of as being similar to the mercy of God(swt)

What I see is that you are agreeing that we are indeed like Allah in some respects -- you mentioned we see and hear. But also remembering that we are not like him in others -- the mechanisms by which we see and hear. So, in the end the Quranic verse is not disproof of the possibility of us being made in the image of Allah, only what it would mean to be made in his image. And that even if we are made in his image that the difference between us and God is so far beyond compare that it remains there is none like him.

With this I would wholeheartedly agree. Indeed, this is one of our Christian affirmations as well. Even this morning a group sang a song entitled, "There Is None Like You" in our worship. (I know you don't listen to instrumental music, so I'll just post the lyrics for your edification.)

    There is none like You.
No one else can touch my heart like You do,
I can search for all eternity Lord
And find, there is none like You.

Your mercy flows like a river wide,
And healing comes from Your hand.
Suffering children are safe in Your arms,
    There is none like You.

There is none like You, (There is none like You, Lord)
    There is none like You.

I can search for all eternity Lord,
    There is none like You.
I can search for all eternity Lord,
There is none, (there is none,)
    There is none Lord,
    There is none like You.

And so, while we will join you in affirming that "there is none like unto Him," we would not see that as in anyway undermining the truth of the statement that we are created in the image of God.

The way that I want to suggest that we are made in the image of God is not in our physical nature at all. After all, it isn't just God and humans that can see and hear. We share those trait with a lot of the rest pf the animal world. And though we talk about the "hand of God", I don't really believe that God has physical hands like we do. So, it image bearing was tied to our physical nature, then that would be to imply that God was a limited finite physical being like us (or other animals), and that simply isn't so.

But is there something true about us that is not true of the rest of the animal kingdom of which we are a created part? I want to suggest that there is.

Now through the centuries this has not been just a religious question, it has also been a scientific question. And the answer has been that we use tools. But we've learned that many animals use tools. Then the answer became that we had language. And we've more recently learned that many animals have language, even language with grammar and syntax. I think the newest idea is that humans are self-aware, having an understanding of themselves and of the "other" as distinct from themselves. But more and more we see this in animals so much so that while we might not yet speak of them having an "Id", "Ego", and "Superego" it wouldn't suprise me is someday soon we do, for already we notice love, compassion, mercy, grief, and awareness of others needs, suffering, and the reality of death among some species so that soon there won't be much left that distinguishes us from some of our fellow creatures.

But, I've yet to hear anyone even posit the question of animals being spiritual or moral beings.

Oh, yes, I know there are those who want to pretend that their favorite pet will be waiting for them in heaven. But, that appears to be more a part of folk religion than that actual teachings of either Islam or Christianity. And even if it were true, it doesn't change my point.

You and I are given commands by God on how to live. We make choices. They are right or wrong, but they are choices of our free will. No one every accused a lion, or even a snake, of being evil because it did what lions and snakes do by nature. Animals make take things without permission, they may try to get you to think one thing while they do another, they may and even do kill, but they don't commit immoral acts because these other things that they do are nor moral decisions. They would be if we humans did them, but they are not when animals do. And I want to suggest that this is because we among all of God's creation were created as free moral agenst, able to know the difference between and choose between good and evil, right and wrong. And it this attribute of moral awareness in which we are created in the image of God that is lacking in the rest of creation.

Now, again, while we share moral awareness with God, it is not like that of God's moral awareness, for given the choice to chose between good and evil, we historically have chosen evil. God does not choose evil and never will, for that is not in his nature. In that regard we are not like him. But in terms of being able to know the difference and make moral decisions, we, uniquely among all of creation, have been created in the image of God in this regard in order that we can choose good, just as God does.

And this works, because, even though we have flesh and blood bodies that occupy time and space (another place where we are unlike God), like God we also exist and live our lives on a spiritual plane. For, unique among his creation, God has breathed a soul into us.

The fact that we see and hear cannot be said to be like Allah. It is not just the mechanism but everything that is different. He is all seeing, all hearing. We may think we are like Allah because we think within the limits or boundaries we have been given in our perception. But the reality is that the truths which lie beyond the range of human perception have always eluded and will continue to elude us; no words exist in the human vocabulary which either express or portray them. In speaking about such things, we necessarily resort to words and expressions generally employed in connection with tangible objects. So we use words like seeing, hearing etc for Allah, actually meaning All-Seeing All-Hearing, but meaning that Allah is aware of all things. How, whether He physically sees or He knows by His vast knowledge is not for human beings to say. When we say seeing and hearing, we mean it with the limited knowledge we have of what to hear and to see means in our human world. As Glo once said in another post, it is merely a way for us humans to grasp the enormity of God within the limitations of our human mind.

So, in the end the Quranic verse is not disproof of the possibility of us being made in the image of Allah, only what it would mean to be made in his image. And that even if we are made in his image that the difference between us and God is so far beyond compare that it remains there is none like him.
As explained above the verse "There is none like unto Him" shows us there us nothing even remotely like him. So we cannot, as Muslims say that of which we have no knowledge concerning Allah.

"...Do you say concerning Allah that which you do not know? (Qur'an 7: part of 28)

With this I would wholeheartedly agree. Indeed, this is one of our Christian affirmations as well. Even this morning a group sang a song entitled, "There Is None Like You" in our worship. (I know you don't listen to instrumental music, so I'll just post the lyrics for your edification.)

    Nice words.

And so, while we will join you in affirming that "there is none like unto Him," we would not see that as in anyway undermining the truth of the statement that we are created in the image of God.
Islamically we are taught not to delve into the hows and whys of Allah, eg how He sees, whether it is seeing how we know it but on a grander scale, or whether it is something described to us as seeing but actually something beyond our perception, what He looks like etc. We affirm what the texts affirm without asking their howness and we stop at where the texts stop at. So whatever Allah has affirmed for Himself, we accept that without making any attempted interpretation of its apparent meaning, and whatever He hasn't mentioned - we don't delve into.

And I want to suggest that this is because we among all of God's creation were created as free moral agenst, able to know the difference between and choose between good and evil, right and wrong. And it this attribute of moral awareness in which we are created in the image of God that is lacking in the rest of creation.
I agree with all this, and that moral awareness is given especially to us humans, but Islamically, we cannot say that it is that respect (or any respect for that matter) that makes us/doesn't make us in the image of God. And that is because in Islam we haven't been told that regarding God.

Islamically to practice my religion, knowing whether I am like God or in his image is not important. That would not affect the practice of my faith. I do hope though, that one day, after we are all resurrected on the day of judgement, I would be amongst those in the passage mentioned below:

"Some faces, that Day, will be radiant and resplendent, looking at their Lord." (75:22-23)

I am sorry if I don't appear to be going into enough depth, but the ins and outs of Allah's qualities is not something that Islamically we have been given a lot of knowledge of. Allah gave us just enough knowledge that we would need to belive in Him, and no more than that. I would end with the words of the angels, at the time of Adam (peace be upon him), when Allah taught him the names of all things, then asked the angels to to tell Him the names of those things:

"They said: Glory be to You. We have no knowledge except what You taught us. You, only You, are All-Knowing, All-Wise." (2:32)

    Peace.

I'm not concerned that you aren't (or if you were) going into great depth. But I don't get how you can in the one hand say that Allah has such and such a quality (qualities that we humans also possess), make allusion to it in the context of your own life (I see in part, Allah is all-seeing) so that you are by the very words you use to describe Allah doing it in comparision to the context of your own life experience, and then still deny that you and Allah have anything in common? I understand that you do this sincerely and aren't simply trying to be argumentative. But, just as sincerely, I don't see how you can make both statements at the same time. It sounds, to me anyway, like the type of "double speak" George Orwell wrote about in 1984.

I do get that the comparision I am making like calling an inch and a light-year similar becasue they are both measurements and that the enormity of the difference between us and Allah far outshines that which we have in common. But to deny that we have things in common is to make Allah so much an "other" that no human could know him. It's one thing to say that Allah is beyond our ability to comprehend, but isn't it quite another to say that he is beyond or ability to relate to? Allah is Al-Qawwiyy. If I don't know what strength is, then I can't understand what it means to say the Allah is The Strong. I can't know strength in the abstract, I know it out of my own experience of being both weak and strong. So, on a much lesser scale than Allah, I too am strong. Not strong like Allah is strong. But like Allah is strong, I too am strong. Now my strength is to so much of a lesser degree than Allah's strength that compared to Allah's it is actually weakness. But, if I did not measure it as strength in my own life, I could never understand what it meant to say that Allah is The Strong.

So, I still don't get why there would be a problem in saying that Allah is The Strong. Like Allah I am (sometimes, and to a lesser degree) strong. But I am not strong like him. There is no contradiction between those two statements.
