Any brother want to guide me in learning about Islam to become a Muslim?

    Report bad ads?

    Hello brothers,

Anyone want to guide me in how to speak and have conversation with Muslims and what to read/study about Islam, so I have knowledge before I travel to a Mosque in about a year maybe and take my Shahadah.
I've said my Shahadah but only Allah is my witness, but I want to study Islam and have knowledge first then travel to a mosque (closest one is quite far from me, another city) and take my Shahadah there.

first of all, we say Asslamu alaikum (which means peace be upon you).

First, learn reading Arabic... and memorise first surah, al-fatiha
    And a couple of surahs.

get mp3 for small surahs so that you can play them and get near close pronunciation of how to spell them perfectly.

as for books, I would suggest 'Foundations of Islam - Abul-Ala Maududi'
and there's a site, where you can find AMPLE of books.

Re: Any brother want to guide me in learning about Islam to become a Muslim?

    Assalamu Alaykum Cyberiminal,

If you've said your Shahadah with understanding and conviction of what it means, then you are already a Muslim. It is not a must to take the Shahadah in a Mosque. It is certainly good to go to the Mosque, but don't delay practising Islam until you go there.

Conversing with Muslims is easy because for the most part, you are speaking in the same way as you would with anyone else. There are a few useful phrases to learn such as the greeting of peace which the brother mentioned above (Assalamu Alaykum - doesn't matter how you spell it in English as it is being transliterated from Arabic).

To study about Islam, start with learning the foundations and most important things, like the Oneness of Allah and the five pillars of Islam (in particular, prayer). There are various books, websites and lectures to help you with this. A couple of websites containing some of the basics are:
    http://www.beconvinced.com
    New Muslims eLearning Site

Some books to be found here:
    Kalamullah.Com | New Muslims

I would advise visiting the Mosque as soon as you can, rather than waiting till you have a certain level of knowledge. There is no minimum level of knowledge that people will expect from you before visiting the Mosque. By going there, you may find others who can help you learn and you can ask questions to those who have knowledge. You may also make friends which is really important.

May Allaah increase you in knowledge and understanding and keep you steadfast, Aameen.

    Salam!

If you already recited the shahada and sincerely believed what you said, you're already a muslim. Might I also suggest Martin Lings' book, entitled 'Muhammad: His life based on the earliest sources'. I don't necessarily think it's necessary for you right now because you're brand new to the faith, but when you've got the basics down and are interested in learning about our Prophet's life, give Martin Lings' book a try, insha Allah.

Re: Any brother want to guide me in learning about Islam to become a Muslim?

Islam is really about submitting to the fact that there is no God but Allah. He is the same God that brought down the other Books - Torah, Psalms, the Bible and the final revelation, the Quran. It preached the same basic messages, the Tauhid. And learn we did, some times to seek the truth and at others, to distort!

Hence our own journey to discover, as what you are undertaking now...me too!

Read about the prophets of islam. The 25 prophets. From there we will see the message of Allah to mankind, throughout man's history.

    Welcome to the deen.

    Greetings my friend,

What a wonderful thing it is that you are searching for the truth and have an inclination in your heart to further your knowledge of Islam. What I would suggest is to strengthen your knowledge on the basic principles of Islam first. The following thread contains everything and more that you require to learn about Islam:

    Resources on Islam:

Free E Books and Resources on Islam

Also do not set yourself time limits of when you think you will go to the Mosque to accept Islam. It is whenever you feel that you are ready whether it is next week or next month. But bare in mind that as humans we do not know when we are going to die. How many people never thought they would die today or tomorrow have passed away. Go the grave yards and they are full of the young. So we can never be certain when we are going to die hence why we should not delay or procrastinate for it maybe that death overtakes us.

If you are certain that there is no worthy of worship except Allah and that the Prophet Muhammad is servant and Messenger then you must not delay in accepting this for one can never have enough knowledge of Islam. I know of people who have accepted Islam with hardly any knowledge and then built up their knowledge gradually after conversion. Therefore if you are certain then you should accept immediately and then build up your knowledge of Islam gradually from there as it is best for you to have a teacher in person rather than rely on online learning.

At the Masjid you will find many who will be willing to help you learn about Islam and there may even be classes for new Muslims to learn about Islam. On top of that you can also build Muslim contacts and befriend Muslim brothers who will be able to assist you. So you do not need prior knowledge to going to the Mosque. Just get in touch with the Masjid and speak to the Imam and brothers there who will be more than willing to speak with you and even teach you.

Also what better month to accept the truth than during this blessed month of Ramadan where upon the Qur'an was revealed.

Re: Any brother want to guide me in learning about Islam to become a Muslim?

    Salaam Cyberiminal,

    How goes your journey?

During my brief absence from the forum whilst it was being upgraded, I had more time to reflect on stuff I read here and elsewhere. I found the being in a forum like this one where the guidelines are pretty strict and it is about promoting islam and not to create doubts, I have further developed my understanding through bouncing of thoughts that crops up intermittently. When the forum was more 'friendly' after the upgrade, I posted a thread on this topic about introduction of islam to people in a simple way. The thread is "About Islam...".

I find Islam to be such a wide subject. After all, it is about the conduct of our own lives (in relation to the way Allah commands). Which means everything we do, say, think and even encompassing the opposite, what we don't do, we don't say, or we don't even think! With that in mind, we are already buried under a mountain of ..... a mountain of ..... What can I use to describe the word. I'm sure you get the drift.

Hence I strive for simplicity, encapsulation, the spirit of the law, often "it is better for you" as it says many times ithe Quran. There was saying passed to me during one of my travels where I met an Iraqi (who was by that time a Swedish citizen due to the Political situation in his home country) on a train in Europe who says where he came from, Iraq there is a 10,000 year old saying "think well, say well and do well" and it beats the hell out out of the 3 monkeys. See no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil. You can still do!

Anyway, I digress, but not really, the deen is about that. So if I could add to that 10,000 year old saying, no offense to people in that region, think well for Allah's sake, say well for Allah's sake, do well for Allah's sake, your conduct in life would be .... Would be .... Why am I not getting these words? :grumbling

I think that's telling me to stop.

Re: Any brother want to guide me in learning about Islam to become a Muslim?

    Salaams Cyberiminal,

Hope you are well and mashallah on your excellent news.

I have no idea where you are based, but try and find out if there are any other "new muslims" in your area. Otherwise contact a local Masjid/Mosque (I am sure you will be able to Google a phone number) and see if they have a "new muslim group". We have one in our Masjid and there have been heaps of brothers and sisters that have shown an interest and attended the drop ins. A lot of them did convert after finding out exactly what it entailed. The best thing is they have telephone numbers for Imams/Scholars so they can regularly ask questions if the need arises.

If you are unsure about anything, feel free to ask on here as there are some very intelligent and learned people - Ardianto, Mohammad, Greenhill and Berries'Frost are amongst them (loads of others as well, sorry I have not named them all!).

Good luck in your quest and I hope it works out for you.
