New to studying Islam, I want to learn about Aniconism and rules on music

hi,Im a student of religious antrophology from an university in Argentina. This is catholic country(or used to be...)so I grew up with a culture of religious statues everywhere.
Im interested in the history, religious justification, and daily life implication,of the islamic ban on graven images\depicting living beings. Wether its statue, drawing, painting etc.
the website IslamQA has an article saying all music is forbidden in islam except for religious chanting. im also interested in this, since I used to suffer very bad behaviour as a result of listening to bad music in my teens.

I have studied many papers on jainism aniconic traditions, but none about islam aniconic(anti-graven images).
For example; are selfies and social media photos forbidden? Or, a similar question;is looking too much at oneself in the mirror considered a worldy vanity, and thus discouraged?

    Hi and welcome.

The prohibition creating statues and images is that
1.it leads to idol worship and
    2. it is imitation of the creation of God and thus trying to complete with him.

Even if one is not trying to do it for those reasons, the room still exists to fall into those and therefore it is forbidden to go down that path.

photography involving hard-copies is prohibited. The digital photography long as it remains digital has a difference of opinion among scholars.

putting photos on social media or online in general comes under other rulings as well, such as making a wanton display of yourself to others (especially females doing this) is something that is forbidden. Having pride is also a big no no so if one admires him/herself in front of mirror or something others means and goes to extreme of being prideful then that does not bode well for him.

In regards to Music, few things need to be considered. There is Music, singing, and dancing.

    1. Musical instruments are forbidden, with the exception of a daff/duff (a one sided drum); but that too is limited in it's used (war time, weddings).

    2. singing with music instruments is forbidden unless its a duff (like for weddings)
    3. nasheeds (islamic singing) is allowed per se, but everything should be in moderation, especially it not keeping you from your obligatory religious duties.
    3. singing/dancing for women allowed if it's among her kin only, not for the eyes of strangers.

^ that generally is the jist of it from islamqa. Other than that you will find Muslims engaging in stuff contrary to that, but that just means they are not fully adhering to the tenets of islam.
