Tasbih - who is allowed to make them?

    Report bad ads?

Ok, this might sound like a simple question to most of you, but I still have to ask.

I would like to give someone (a muslim) very dear to me a Tasbih (the prayer beads for the 99 names of Allah) as a gift. I know I can buy them at online stores, but I was hoping I could actually make it myself (using wood beads or natural materials) simply because I like making things myself, it makes it more personal, it comes from the heart. The problem is, I am not a muslim (I am considering conversion, but I am not ready to take that step at present the moment). I was planning on learning the 99 names of Allah for when I put together the Tasbih, but I just wanted to know if I could even just make one to begin with?

If I cannot, then is there anyone I can contact to have one made? And who is allowed to make them?

Thank you for your time and responses!

Re: Tasbih - who is allowed to make them?

I was not to certain if I should leave this question here or move it to another section. I think it is well suited for this section as this is an area that probably is of concern with many new Muslims and non-Muslims who have Muslim friends.

This is my own impression as I can find no reference that tasbih beads have any worship significance to us.

The tasbih beads have no religious significance in themselves and as such are no more than beads. They are not objects of worship or reverence and can be used for any purpose. In my own opinion you are making your friend a set of beads, what he chooses to do them is of his own concern.

    Just my personal thoughts astagfirullah

I would say the same thing if a non-Muslim chose to make a Muslim friend a cabinet or a table to hold a Qur'an. The important thing would be that the table or cabinet properly protects or supports the Qur'an.

For that matter does it matter who made the Kufi I wear on my head. It is simply a hat for me to wear in respect of Allah(swt). Does it matter who made the prayer rug I pray on, as long as I know it is not made of any haraam product.

Hey Mai, you sound like a good friend! I'm sure the person who is dear to you will be delighted with the tasbih you are making from the heart.

I once had a tasbih that got broken and the beads went all over the place. I meant to thread them back together again but never got around to it. Some of the beads are probably still hiding under the sofa somewhere.

    Mashallah

I like the deep reverence you have towards islam and the fact that you are scared to do things which might not be accepted in Islam. May ALLAH SUBHANA WA TALLAH guide you.

Re: Tasbih - who is allowed to make them?

Ok, well it seems most people I have asked do not see a problem with me putting together a Tasbih, which makes me very happy. I've done more researching and I no know some people use it, others discourage it and others say you should not use it (and I completely respect every opinion). I know this one person (that I am making it for) sees no harm in having one.

Now, along with the researching I did, I am trying to figure out which materials to use. I'm looking for something simple (as I do not see as as an accessory, but more like a tool). I'm trying to find which materials would be best. I've found some wooden beads which aren't too bad (and they are durable) as well as some horn beads and some made with semi-precious stones (I'm highly considering some sardonyx or agate) - it is more fragile, but then again it's not an object which someone should throw around.

Could anyone give me their opinion on those materials, which would perhaps be better?

In the meantime, I will be learning the 99 names of Allah so that I can better understand (and appreciate) just what the Tasbih is for. PS I also know that some do 33 repetitions of 3 different shorter prayers.

Thank you again for your time and help!

Do not make them out of horn. Horn is an animal product and it could be haraam, depending on the source. In beads I doubt you could verify the source so I would say do not make it out of, horn, bone, ivory or leather.

I am very impressed with your respect and desire not to do anything to go against our beliefs.

Re: Tasbih - who is allowed to make them?

Thank you for the advice Woodrow, it's much appreciated. I will try to stay away from the horn, but I will still ask the store I order from where it comes from (in case anyone ever asks me in the future).

I am actually highly considering the sardonyx and agate.

Thank you for the 2 major compliments concerning my attitude towards Islam. I try my best to stay respectful to other religions, ask questions and learn. It also helps that I am considering converting, but as previously stated, I rather take my time and be 100% sure that this is the right thing for me (as my relationship with God has become very important). But for now my goal is to learn as much as I can. When I am ready, God will let me know.
