    Medicine or teacher (OP)

    I have four options

    1. Medicine --> physician
    2. Pharmacist
    3. Teacher; class teacher, a language teacher, special education teacher, handicraft teacher, domestic teacher, kindergarten teacher (I love kids)... Pretty much any teacher.
    4. Interpreter (/translator)

Pharmacist looks boring, mostly revolving around drugs. I put it as an option as I didn't have a problem with working in a pharmacy, but I think I'll leave this out. I don't have anything against chemistry, but I think I'll be dead-bored before I'll manage to finish my studies.

Medicine looks versatile and human medicine is very interesting. The only problem is that it's hard to get in and it seems very stressful.

Teaching is nice too. Additionally, employment looks good and you can work abroad insha'Allah.

Interpreter is okay, but I don't know if I'll like my work. Teaching looks more fun. As I speak a few languages, if needed maybe I could do this as a side-job in future insha'Allah.

I suppose this leaves us medicine and teaching. 65% of my heart is inclined towards medicine. I like to take care of people, learn about the human body and study science.

Should I do so that I apply to both? If I get chosen to medicine, study it and if not, study to become a teacher?

Any opinions/comments, please? Did I forget to consider something?

To update, I prayed istikhaarah and Allah opened my heart to dentistry. I will be having the entrance exam next Wednesday, insha'Allah. Please make du'a for me. If I don't get accepted this year, I will have to try again next year. Which would mean I graduate older. And I want to finish my studies as quick as possible. Please remember me in your du'as.

I have also applied for English language. If I don't get accepted into dentistry, I'll have to go for this one (and try again next year for dentistry).

    Re: Medicine or teacher

    Wow.

I too fell in love with the idea of studying medicine back in college, however, I didn't get a place alhamdullilah!! I prayed istikhara and Allah chose a better path for me I guess. It is key that you ask for guidance in your path because we don't really know what is best for us. I went through a million different career choices because I loved to be involved in everything, I love the Arts and I like teaching and I want to serve the deen.

Anyway, I never intended on studying a pharmacy degree but an opportunity came about dispite all odds. Univerisities were due to start in two weeks time, most Schools were filled, I wrote to them anyway and I was given a position at one of the best schools of pharmacy. The course was a traditional course, so I had a good taste of each subject and its anything but boring! Im almost at the end of my journey alhamdullilah, and I don't plan on putting my career before other things and pharmacy gives me the flexibility to do that. I also tuition privately and still have time to do my creative stuff here and there. InshAllah my spiritual development will be my priority as soon as I have completed my final exam.

Anyway my point is firstly ask for Allah's guidance, secondly your priorities will change as you grow older.. keep this in mind. I hope He gives you what is best for you.

I think you can be an interperter in addition to whatever else you want to do. If you end up not choosing the teaching career path, you can always have a private tutoring session on weekends or something. Just a thought.

you're absolutely right about the feeling of suffocation.. It is like traversing an ocean and you're in the middle of it.. you can't go back to where you came from, you've lost so much already, yrs invested, finances, alienation with nothing to show for, you can't quite get to the other side because there is always a storm brewing and when/if you finally get there it becomes utterly meaningless unfortunately just considering how much was lost..

I am pretty sure not everyone has that experience but most people I have encountered in my class, on the wards, real life feel that way...
I wouldn't recommend this career to anyone unless they felt very strongly about because it takes so much dedication and is very time consuming.. I am not suggesting that pharmacy takes any less dedication and God knows you have your own miseries to deal with from people given intrathecal vincristine to those given chemo and filgrastim on the same day with the sole responsibility falling on the pharmacist still seems in my own mind less stressful than the medicine experience..
If I had to do over I'd seriously reconsider pharmacy I don't know why I was so averse to it at the time.. but anyhow can't complain because I do love medicine regardless of what an awful road it was..

    Assalaamu Alaykum,

Jazakallaahu khayran for updating us. It is really good to hear that your heart has settled on something, and dentistry seems a very good choice Masha'Allaah. May Allaah (swt) give you success in your entrance exam and in all exams thereafter, Aameen.

It's also important to have a backup plan in case you don't get in. So if you do end up waiting a year, make sure that no time is wasted.

As the sister above said, Istikharah is vital and we never know where goodness truly lies for us. When you look back at the way things turned out, you truly appeciate the truth of this.

May Allaah (swt) give everyone success and happiness in their studies and careers, Aameen.

    Salaam,

Studying medicine is stressful. I worked at a Human Resources Department at a hospital and doctors have no lives...I've heard doctors get beaten and work all night sometimes. It is not a nice job...I have heard psychiatrists actually committed suicide which is very ironic and sad. :/

highest rate of suicide amongst doctors are anesthesiologists.. They're the best at it and they've all the right tools..

    Re: Medicine or teacher

Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "If a son of Adam were to own a valley full of gold, he would desire to have two. Nothing can fill his mouth except the earth (of the grave). Allah turns with mercy to him who turns to Him in repentance".
    [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

no matter which career people are in, they will criticize it. no one is ever happy with what they have. medicine? no, nursing is better. accounting? no, owning your own business is better. list goes on. every career has flaws, but you should never decide on a career based on what someone tells you, because the way i view things, if you are a miserable person at heart, no career will ever make you happy, in fact you bring in your negativity into your career too. remember, it's about the person and not about the work they do. some people will just always dwell on things and never be happy. instead of seeing how blessed they are and how lucky they are to have the opportunities they have been given, they will complain about how hard it is and the sacrifices needed. it makes me laugh sometimes actually. people pick these paths themselves, then act as though it is a great inconvenience to them to work hard. happiness and contentment comes from inside a person's heart, from Allah.

med school, dental school, any degree of any kind, is not a giant fix-it, for life itself. if you are negative, you will be unhappy no matter what you do, and will always think you are worse off and other people have it better. whereas a true muslim can do nothing at all, or have everything in the world, doesn't matter to them, they do not dwell on it, because they understand that satisfaction and happiness and everything else comes from within you when you are lost in love for Allah, you can do something which on the surface seems so boring and insignificant to you and if your heart is true and you do it with good intentions for Allah, Allah will bless you in it and will make it interesting and easy and enjoyable for you. may Allah give you happiness in whatever you choose, and remember it is just a career, not your whole life, it does not define you as a person, never complain about what Allah gives to you, blesses you with, because when we are unthankful for His blessings, there is nothing worse than that. always surround yourself with positive people who don't moan and complain 24/7, because someone who is SO against what they do, and then contradict themselves by still doing it, those people are not good friends for you. hanging out with such people or listening to them is dangerous to you. you will find lots in your classes who complain a lot, run away from them and go sit with those who are always saying alhamdulillah, this is so hard but wow, i'm so lucky to be here, wow, Allah gave me a full body, i can do all this work, look at all those who can't, those are the people you need to surround yourself with. negativity fosters more negativity. make negative friends who complain all the time, and you will become like that too, and no one will want to be around you and worse than that, Allah will be unhappy with you for rejecting His blessings. may Allah allow you to work hard to please Him. choose your sources of advice and friends very wisely.

Im nearing my 2nd year of medicine and it is going great for me so far alhamdulillaah. There are stressful moments but its nowhere as bad as people are making it sound. The amount of hours a doctor makes depends on which field it is and in which country as well as which hospital. There are doctors at the other end of the spectrum that make normal hours with great pay.

    Re: Medicine or teacher

Medicine is such an honorable and respected career and one should be very thankful to have the privilege to study it. I am sure the hardship that one goes through during training is soon forgotten when the journey is over.

BTW, has anyone heard that pharmacists will be replaced with robots in the near future?

Also, I thought it was dentistry that had the highest suicide rate, maybe because most patients do not look forward to their office visits. But, I think specialties, such as pediatric dentistry or orthodontics, can be very rewarding and provide a good income with a flexible schedule for family time.

I had the dentistry exam (it's the same exam for medicine and dentistry) today. It went very badly, for many reasons. I'm sure I won't get in unless a miracle happens.

    I don't feel like re-applying for dentistry next year, I won't, insha'Allah.

I still have another entrance exam for English left next week, insha'Allah. Insha'Allah that one goes better.

Jazakumullahu khair for your input and du'aas.

There are many alternatives if you like to take care of people. If you are in USA then become a chiropracter or acupuncture this will not cost much and still you can see patients from insurance. It is easier to get in these collages.

Also there is a massive field of spiritual medicine and alternative medicine please check the Quran shifa book and the Flame within book here at cidpusa foundation.

    That's great news, Mashallah!

Won't you feel sick looking at other people's teeth?

Not at all, bro. In fact, I find the mouth region very interesting.

I know what you mean, though. Admittedly, I wasn't excited about it in the past. But now, after hearing some quite "disgusting" stories from my sister, who studies medicine, compared to her work all I can say is al-hamdulillah.

Additionally, if you count the positive aspects, this issue will seem small and insignificant, insha'Allah.
