    Medicine or teacher (OP)

    I have four options

    1. Medicine --> physician
    2. Pharmacist
    3. Teacher; class teacher, a language teacher, special education teacher, handicraft teacher, domestic teacher, kindergarten teacher (I love kids)... Pretty much any teacher.
    4. Interpreter (/translator)

Pharmacist looks boring, mostly revolving around drugs. I put it as an option as I didn't have a problem with working in a pharmacy, but I think I'll leave this out. I don't have anything against chemistry, but I think I'll be dead-bored before I'll manage to finish my studies.

Medicine looks versatile and human medicine is very interesting. The only problem is that it's hard to get in and it seems very stressful.

Teaching is nice too. Additionally, employment looks good and you can work abroad insha'Allah.

Interpreter is okay, but I don't know if I'll like my work. Teaching looks more fun. As I speak a few languages, if needed maybe I could do this as a side-job in future insha'Allah.

I suppose this leaves us medicine and teaching. 65% of my heart is inclined towards medicine. I like to take care of people, learn about the human body and study science.

Should I do so that I apply to both? If I get chosen to medicine, study it and if not, study to become a teacher?

Any opinions/comments, please? Did I forget to consider something?

I am baffled at why you'd think that Medicine which is an evidence based science would be merely about giving a drug out, further baffled at why you'd make a promise such as this
I promise you will get far better results with your patients than you will by prescribing a drug.
We actually have to take separate courses now to learn of the ills of these so-called herbs which not only interact with tried and proven drugs but cause an onslaught of side effects so horrible all their own.. I am by God happy that you've found your niche but I think it is very bad advise to define a science which you haven't studied with such narrow terms or tell someone who has worked hard to get into a very challenging and very rewarding career to go into something that' clearly not accepted by a governing body or people at large.. There's room for 'holistic' medicine and I use that term with caution but it isn't a substitute for evidence based medicine..

    Wa3lykoum asalaam wr wb,

No! Emphasis isn't on prescribing some meds, emphasis is on doing what is best for the patient by offering the latest in scientific and medical technology while respecting the autonomy of the patient so that s/he can make an informed decision!
Anyways, that scenario was given to help people understand what is meant by holistic treatment, because some of us seem to have misunderstood.. thinking it causes more harm.. They should ask themselves.. does changing the contaminated water cause the fish more harm ?
In fact I changed the contaminated water for my beta fish once and it went belly up three hours later.. not filtering its own filth kept it alive, putting fresh water in killed it, and that is because I had no understanding of the science behind what should keep it alive (this is a true story) and not for the purpose of this post!

lol I just gave her an alternative option after she said her entry exam for medical school didnt go to well. So I said to her if her interest and passion is in being a practioner, then why not explore other areas in that field instead of leaving medicine altogether. Ofcourse, it would be ideal if a person qualified as a medical doctor, and then went further to study alternative medicine too (esp nutrition), no one is objecting against that.
Al7mdlillah she did well and got accepted into a good choice!

Anyways, she has chosen dentistry mashaAllaah. I wish her the best.

An effective treatment is not neccessarily that which is accepted by the governing body, but its that which is accepted by the human body. And like Dr Paavo Airola stated "If the doctors of today dont become the nutritionsists of tommorow, then the nutritionists of today will be the doctors of tommorow.

Indeed.. I'd love to encounter that wonder nutrition or holistic approach that would rid us of cancer, rabies or even the common cold.. I suspect that the holistic institution would gain more credibility and popularity. Believe me I am not against holistic medicine.. just encountered loads of quacks who speak of things that have no basis in science, human physiology, genetics, biochemistry or anatomy..

    Salaam,

Speaking of medicine, do anti-depressants actually help those who are suffering from depression?

It depends but an independent NIH study proved that placebo fared better than antidepressants and their so-called 'holistic alternative' St. John's wort which by the way works just like the tricyclic class of antidepressant. Which are obsolete and have a host of side effects. I recommend cognitive behavior therapy for depression and this book
    http://www.amazon.com/When-Panic-Att...4562960&sr=8-1
which focuses on a drug free approach to deal with anxiety and depression..

    and Allah swt knows best

    This is a good anti-depressant

I agree with the Shaykh, anti-depressants are merely masking agents. Its all about keeping the right company and recognising goodness in our affairs.
