    Seeking knowledge in Islam

    السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Imām al-Sha’bī was once asked, ‘How did you attain all this knowledge?’ He replied:

بنفي الاعتماد و السير في البلاد و صبر كصبر الحمار و بكور كبكور الغراب

“By independency, by travelling through cities, by having patience like that of a donkey and by rising early like the rising of crows.”

    ● Source: ‘Uluww al-Himmah by Muhammad Isma’il al-Muqaddam

Here are a few points of benefit that we can derive:

    ● Be independent in your studies. Don’t rely on someone or something to always motivate you and push you to learn.

    ● Learn how to motivate yourself! Be free from distractions and limitations.

    ● Do not procrastinate.

    ● Travel! Keep on the move! Go from A to B, then B to C! Don’t be stagnant in your life; always have a peak that you’re reaching for.

    ● If knowledge is not in your immediate vicinity, seek it out and go to where it is!

    ● Be patient. More patient than the donkey overloaded with cargo. Bear all the hardships on this path, bear the trials and tribulations.

    ● Get up early! The Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘My Ummah has been blessed in its early portion (of the day).’ Seek out the blessings of the morning. Tips for Time Management are in this hadith! You may not have time during the day, but you’ll always have time in the mornings.

    ● Give yourself no excuses, because most of the time an excuse is a barrier that you place between you and your goals.

Reminder to myself first and foremost.

    جزاك اللهُ خير‎

    Re: Seeking knowledge in Islam

    JazakAllahy khayr,

I think the Muslim of today has little excuse not to seek knowledge. The great scholars of the past would travel to completely different cities, gave up everything they knew, relinquished any of the luxuries of life to attain knowledge. These days, we can learn everything from tafsir to Arabic to fiqh from the comfort of our own homes, sitting in our armchairs eating chocolates . This isn't a bad thing btw, just an observation that to attain knowledge these days is easier for the Muslim youth, Alhamdulillah.

Even the books I buy on Islamic Knowledge come through the internet - there are no Muslim bookstores nearby so I order them off Amazon.

subhannallah its amazing how the scholars of the past would travel from madina to egypt to learn a single hadith whereas in our age their is everything at our finger tips, tafsirs, hadith compilations, biographies, treatises on fiqh and more lectures than one could possibly listen to and cant even be bothered to turn the computer on for the sake of ilm
    may Allah guide us

    Re: Seeking knowledge in Islam

Indeed.. سبحان الله even if we seek knowledge for Allah swt it will be nothing compared to what the scholars strived for back in the days. We are a lazy ummah.

Knowledge is so important that's why I encourage everyone to study Islam and Quran so you can benefit the generations to come.

Goes to me first and foremost.

And females... Sisters you lot are the mothers of future generations to come in sha Allah seek knowledge before you get hitched so you have enough to teach your kids and make them righteous in sha Allah, same goes for the brothers... Do what u can for Allah and think about the benefits for Allah azzawajal
