Islamic schools or mixed faith? (OP)

    Asalaamualaikum

I was having a conversation with a friend of mine once. We were simply debating whether islamic schools were better or mixed faith. Living in a kuffar country, when i have children inshAllah i want to send them to islamic schools because i believe that going to mixed faith schools can corrupt a child's mind, and i just dont like the atmosphere in them, there's alot of ideas floating around that introduce fitnah and other unislamic habits even if you send them to single sex schools, e.g. smoking, drinking, dating etc - this is all the norm in mixed faith schools.

I went to a mixed faith girls high school, and apart from their being no boys, i didnt see any difference between my school and any other mixed faith school, we had male teachers mostly.

I dont know about everyone else, but when as i was growing up, after school we would go to the mosque, madrassah or a teachers house to learn how to read the Quran - i didnt recieve any islamic education other than learning to read arabic. I know there are alot of madrassahs that teach you tajweed, translations and hadiths as you learn how to read the Quran but this isnt the case everywhere and certainly wasnt in my case. Alhamdulillah at home my parents were always teaching me hadiths and other islamic teachings and stories so i have always been pretty in tune with it all.
    ^
Now if it wasnt for this, where is a child to learn about islam or to read arabic? Not everyones parents are like mine.

Taking in mind contemporary society - who has time these days? I havw traditional parents, my dad went to work my mum was ahousewife. These days its the norm for both the parents to work, everyone is so much busier these days, who has time to teach their kids about islam? Not every area has a madrassah or organisation to teach islam.

Then why not send your children to islamic schools? It's like killing two birds with one stone, you recieve your islamic teaching and other academic studies all together.

My friends argument was that, living in a kuffar country, once we leave school, we will enter the working world in which we will be forced to interact with various communities of faiths and beliefs, and if we are secluded from such communties due to education in islamic schooling, then we will not understand how to interact with different people," it's like being thrown into the middle of the ocean not knowing how to swim" - was basically his idea. Also that islamic schools are not easy on the pocket - this is somethig i agree with.

    What do you think?

*by the way i dont agree with MUSLIM schools at all (schools built for muslim children that do no consist of specific islamic teaching) these schools are very different to islamic schools.

    Ma'salaama

Almost at every corner u will see kissing, hugging, cursing, just plain corruptness. If they went to an islamic school the situation might have been different. The teenage years to a kid are extremely important as he looks to his peers and friends, and if he doesnt have a strong islamic base at home, theres a strong chance that he will go astray. Well as a muslim, that kid needs to know hes different in the way he lives, we as muslims live our lives according to the Quran and Sunnah, not according to society, which changes day by day. And ofcourse Islam is tolerant of all religions and there is no compulsion, as Allah Subhanwatala states in the Quran:
002.256 Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.

Re: Islamic schools or mixed faith?

    assalamu aliakum

u really cannot only blame the skool for corrupt or non-religious muslims, u also have to look at the home and the way they are brought up. i think that if u give ur child a strong basis at home, during his/her early years, give em a good islamic education, whats islamic whats not, i dont see why u cant send ur kid to a non islamic school. u shud be confident in the way u brought up ur kid!!

its funny since i currently attend an islamic scool, but i went to public and other private skools for most of my life lol.. anyway i think also that it depends on ur child if u feel he/she is easily influenced etc than an islamic school is better.

for some reason i feel that in some cases parents send their kids to islamic schools cos they just cant be bothered giving their kids a sound islamic education they think that the school can do it all.... noaaoo that is not the case, even within islamic school ur kid can be confronted with drugs, dating etc

so i rekon all comes down to how u bring him/her up

    forgive me for my mistakes
    wassalam

Re: Islamic schools or mixed faith?

i totally agree with muslimah-88, since i myself went to an islamic school also and i found that many of the girls were worse than girls in public school, and that there were more fitnas to overcome in islamic school than public school, although there is more freedom

In some Islamic schools, the only difference is prayer and there is not even an islamic atmosphere (or so I've heard)

Re: Islamic schools or mixed faith?

    Asalamu Alaikum,
I myself went to an islamic school and I am really happy that I did. I went to the islamic school through out my middle school and I am really happy that I did. they taught alot about my deen by teaching me islamic studies, arabic, islamic history and we had salah time were all the student prayed in jamah. The school also had challenging class which boosted my knowldege. I went a public high school and I had no problems and I had the highest grade ever and also I was the top student of my freshman/9th grade class. Thanks to the islamic school, I am doing really good alhamduliah.
I [U]recommend that you send your child to an islamic school becuse I am pretty sure that it will inshallah have the same impact on them.

Re: Islamic schools or mixed faith?

I'm kind of in between. Islamic schools are good mashallah especially if you are living in a non-muslim country. It helps to have the islamic enviorment around you to help you become a better person because that is what some of us need. But I attend I guess it would be "mixed faith" school. And I look at it as an oppurtunity to spread Islam and give dawah and subhanallah you'll be suprised at how many people are interested. Especially now, it's our job to atleast try and clear the misconceptions out there and see the true Islam. So I guess it depends on what you prefer.

Re: Islamic schools or mixed faith?

salams.. i currently attend an islamic school [or as a person put it earlier, a 'muslim school'] and i feel that i have benefited from it. unfortunetly there are many students who lack islamic behaviour. many girls do not waer the hijab outside of school and there is much dating, socialising between girls and boys and flirting. also, the classes for the older students are not seperated, male and females are in mixed classes (there are reasons for this, it relates to the sturucture of the goverment set courses).

however, one cant say that it is ALL bad. i have many good friends who practise the religion, and are relativly decent muslims. also, the school does promote islamic behaviour. around the school we have many signs about peace, tolerance and such things. the aim of the school, primarly, is to provide a normal schooling education in an islamic enviroment, not to provide a full on islamic education, however we do have islamic studies and quran classes. i admit the school is not perfect, but i feel that i have benifited from the islamic enviroment

i just thought i would share this opinion
