Re: Would You Let Your Children Have Pets?

I prefer the kids not have contact with animals in fear the kids may harm the animal. Pull the animal's leg, do harmful things to the animal. I prefer if they reach much maturity level...14+ before they can come contact with animals.

Is there Islamic ruling concerning owning exotic animals as pets such as lions, tigers, etc? Shouldn't these beasts be in the wild fulfilling their roles?

    https://islamqa.info/en/140526

    Quote "Praise be to Allaah.

It is not permissible to keep and train foxes, wolves and other predators such as lions and tigers, because there is no benefit in that, and because keeping them may lead to great harm, as there is no guarantee that they will not get loose and harm people. Moreover, keeping them is a waste of money and spending on something inappropriate. It is also an imitation of those spendthrifts who have no ambition except satisfying their whims and desires.

Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in al-Majmoo‘ (9/286-287): The second category of animals is those in which there is no benefit, so it is not permissible to sell them, such as dung beetles, scorpions and snakes. … Our companions said: that also includes wild animals that are not suitable for hunting with or fighting, and cannot be eaten, such as lions, wolves, tigers, bears and so on. Sales of such animals are not valid, because there is no benefit in them. End quote.

Zakariya al-Ansaari (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

Sales of insects that are of no benefit are not permissible, and neither are sales of wild animals that are of no benefit, such as lions, wolves and tigers. The awe involved when kings keep such animals and show that they can handle them is not regarded as being of any benefit, unlike cases in which there is some benefit, such leopards for hunting or, it was said, elephants for war. End quote.

    Fath al-Wahhaab, 1/273

The Scholars of the Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas were asked about the shar‘i ruling on dealing in or keeping animals that are used to fulfil whims and desires, including predators such as wolves, lions, foxes and so on.

    They replied:

It is not permissible to sell predators such as wolves, lions, foxes and other wild animals that have fangs, because the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade that. And because it is a waste of money, and the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade wasting money. End quote.

    Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, 13/38-21

It is well known that many of those who keep and train predators find that the animal does not forget its wild origins and devours its keeper, or attacks him or someone else.

There is a story that a Bedouin took a young wolf and raised it on the milk of a sheep he had, and he said to himself: If I raise it with the sheep, it will develop compassion towards it and will protect it, and it will be better than a dog, and will not know the ways of its own kind. But when it grew strong, it pounced on the sheep and devoured it, and the Bedouin said:

    You ate my little sheep although you grew up amongst us;

How did you know your father was a wolf?

    Muhaadaraat al-Udaba’, 1/115

    @xboxisdead

The above statements are opinion - please provide actual logical proofs based on Quran and ahadith -

I had issues coming to grips with keeping a bird in a cage,
And wondered why the Prohet said:
    "Ya 'Umair, maa fu'il an-Nughair"

    https://sunnah.com/search/?q=%D8%A7%...BA%D9%8A%D8%B1

instead of explaining that it was undesireable to keep/cage an animal not fit for food, i realised that there is a limit to the amount of control a leader should exert on the people.

i know that Allah has made it lawful for us to enslave animals for lawful food and lawful work - even though it's difficult to come to grips with after having watched them in family settings, and i know that Allah allowed the children of israel to be the chosen race amongst humans during the tribal age before the sending/raising of universal messenger of Allah Muhammad to humankind.

Anyways, i think i see what you're getting at, that was most probably a Chechen mafia boss' tiger and it is unlawful to give it human flesh to dispose of -and crime in Allah's sight is forbidden (haraam), and even if it was an animal belonging to a common citizen, the resources fed to it would need to come out of the fruits of community labour -and humans have more right to lawful food than animals -and it is unlawful to subject individuals and communities to usury bondage and force them into eating pag pag.

Honestly the whole concept of owning a tiger is for status reason. That reason is enough is not right. It shows materialism or arrogance and status. All of that is against Islam.

Also...these wild enemies have a job to do...ones you take them from their job and you put in a car....your negating their job just for status and to show off. That tiger should be out in the wilderness hunting.

Did you mean "enemies" when referring to tigers and lions - or something else?

It's really easy for people to say should and shouldn't - but much care is needed when making laws, and also an understanding of what's acceptable even if it's not ideal - along with a fair judgement of people's tastes within Allah 's limits, including and not limited to: brass door handles, chandeliers, paint, floor and wall tiles, crafted woodwork, shoes and watches that aren't the cheapest despite the fact that other cheaper items fulfill the same basic function ..... and personally i would love to have a tiger if i could keep it well fed lawfully and take good care of it - like say if i had a huge cow and/or cattle and/or fish farm and/or processing unit where more than enough cattle meat or fish not fit for human consumption was available to keep the cats well fed - i would probably entertain the idea of getting one myself just to be able to play with it, tickle it, wrestle with it, and put my hand in it's mouth, i do the same with my cat and used to do that with my cousin's rottweiler back in jahiliyyah - it's something about adrenaline and a feeling of fun as long as it's not oppressed and it's played with regularly. People are different and Allah and His Messenger's limits and guidelines are good for all people.

Also useful to bear in mind that not all people keep cats because they have rats and cockroaches you know - some just like to have an animal of their choice at home.

Some things to bear in mind when legislating would be the rulings on keeping dogs, the rights of humans, and those of animals, the implications for human safety during famine and other scenarios where the source of lawful food waste may become insufficient, and the benefit vs risk tally, which include studies of the evolution of human and tiger relationship and whether interaction makes humans safe in the long run - since these animals do communicate with each other and do sometimes come across other humans when back in the wild.

(Humankind added by myself in brackets for clarification).

    M. M. Pickthall
Hast thou not seen how Allah hath made all that is in the earth subservient unto you (humankind)? And the ship runneth upon the sea by His command, and He holdeth back the heaven from falling on the earth unless by His leave. Lo! Allah is, for mankind, Full of Pity, Merciful.

    Yusuf Ali (Saudi Rev. 1985)
Seest thou not that Allah has made subject to you (humankind) all that is on the earth, and the ships that sail through the sea by His Command? He withholds the sky (rain) from failing on the earth except by His leave: for Allah is Most Kind and Most Merciful to man.

    And Allah knows best.

Though, i personally most likely wouldn't get one even if i could because i get bored and inattentive not long after the novelty wears off.
